Scottish/English Infantry Basket-Hilt Composite Back Sword

Lot # 661 (Sale Order: 667 of 842)

Scottish/English Infantry Basket-Hilt Composite Back Sword, ca. 1780, 35" long double fullered blade with a flat back spine, blade measures 1-3/8" at the ricasso. Faint engraved maker's markings on the top of the spine at the rear. The English favored single edged blades with a flat spine, rather than the double-edged broad sword. This would have been issued to NCO's in the Scottish infantry around 1780. The steel basket and pommel show a Scottish design in the piercings and construction but may be a little later than the blade. The spiral grooved wood grip is a fairly recent replacement, and the pommel and capstan rivet are of a later design, so this sword is a composite of parts. Basket, grip, and pommel are tight to the blade. OAL is 41". Condition is good, the blade showing a spotted light pitted dark patina overall, with light cleaning, a few edge nicks, and slight wavy bend near the point. Basket shows a brown patina with light cleaning and some minor to heavy rust and pitting mainly on the inside. Wood grip has been aged well and is in good condition. No scabbard. Est.: $500-$800.

Blade measures 1-5/8" at the ricasso area, with a wide fuller running down the center, and a narrow small fuller at the top under the flat spine. The English favored single-edged blades with a flat spine, rather than the double-edged broad sword, so this would have been issued to enlisted NCOs in the Scottish infantry around 1750. No visible maker's markings. steel basket and pommel show a Scottish design in the piercings and construction. Spiral grooved wood grip is a fairly recent replacement, could be a composite of parts, as the tang peen looks more recently done, but assembled and aged well. Basket and grip are tight to the blade. Very Rare Civil War Allen & Wheelock Center-Hammer Lipfire Army Revolver, 1st Model

Lot # 669 (Sale Order: 675 of 842)

Very Rare Civil War Allen & Wheelock Center-Hammer Lipfire Army Revolver, 1st Model, NVSN, .44 Lipfire cal., 7.5" round-to-octagonal barrel is marked "Allen & Wheelock Worcester, MS, U.S./Allen's Pat's Sept. 7, Nov. 9, 1858" at left flat. Solid frame encloses round 6-shot cylinder having notches for cartridge "lips" at rear, split hinged trigger guard/cartridge ejector, top-hinged loading gate, integral straps with 2-pc. walnut grips. Mfg'd ca. 1860-63 with blued finish, case hardened hammer and trigger guard, until patent-infringement litigation from Smith & Wesson ended production due to its bored-thru cylinder, with only about 250 guns produced.
