Modified British Pattern 1856 Cavalry Carbine

Lot # 936 (Sale Order: 101 of 393)      

Modified British Pattern 1856 Cavalry Carbine, #663, .577 cal., 21" Smoothbore barrel, blued finish, hardwood stock, inverted "V" front sight and fixed V-notch rear sight. Captive rammer under barrel and bar with sling ring on left side. Steel nipple protector with chain attached to trigger guard. #132 stamped into right side buttstock and brass marking disc. The barrel bands and brass trigger guard show British Enfield arsenal inspection stamps and/or War Dept. ownership marks. Left side of barrel has Enfield arsenal proof and view stamps. Lockplate is a locally made replacement and is stamped with a crown and an unreadable inscription. Buttplate is also a locally made replacement. Condition overall is good as modified, the metal retaining over 80% finish, with some parts showing patina or thinning. There is a crack to the wrist behind the receiver tang, otherwise the wood is good with added varnish applied over old handling marks. Bore is fair with rust and patina that may clean better. Antique Belgian Double Action Percussion Revolver, #4046, 10mm cal., 6.125" octagonal barrel marked "David H(?)/Brevete" (likely "HN" for David Hermann), and "(crown)/N" at left lug, "4046" and "262" beneath, has knurled barrel retaining screw, provision for jointed left-side loading lever (missing), dovetailed sight blade ground off; round 6-shot cylinder has oval Liege "ELG/star" and "(crown)/N" proofs; open-top frame has standing breech with sighting notch, separate trigger guard, integral "saw-handle" straps with 1-pc. checkered walnut grip. Condition is good, showing cleaned gray gunmetal having good edges. Grip has had rifle sling-loop added with wood reduced to fit, shows wear, missing oval buttcap. European "Brooklyn Bridge" Period Copy of a Colt Model 1851 Navy Percussion Revolver, #17464.35 cal., 5-13/16" octagonal barrel marked "(crown)/(crossed keys)", "American", "(crown)/(crossed keys)" on top flat; jointed loading lever below. Round 6-shot cylinder engraved with the "Brooklyn Bridge" scene has alternating "(crown)/A" and "(crossed scepters)" proofs at nipples. Open-top frame marked "Patent (?) System" at left, "V/(star)" and "297" right, has iron straps ("35 Cal." stamped on left guard shoulder), with 1-piece walnut grip. Condition is fair retaining no original finishes, being dull gray gunmetal cleaned of moderate erosion with good edges and markings. Crude braze repairs at top of recoil shields. Cylinder scene is sharp. Grips are sound showing wear, marks, 3/8" chip at right heel, smaller one at left. Action functions but cylinder does not turn and fits loosely; bore has erosion with fair rifling. Est.: $500-$700. (Antique)

Antique Probably American Flintlock Long Rifle, NVSN, .40 cal., 34" octagonal barrel, primitive blade front and buckhorn style rear sights. "Banana" lockplate is marked "570" at rear, has separate brass pan, "US" crudely scratched where other markings once were. Walnut fullstock has early-style "fish belly" butt and trigger with curled tail, brass buttplate marked "I.F.K." at top, 3 large brass tacks at right, raised cheek rest at left, brass nosecap and 3 ferrules retaining the striped hickory ramrod. Touchhole is unbushed, lock appears to be original flintlock but may be a replacement as fit at rear is not exact. Condition is good, the iron parts being generally dark brown, the brass an aged patina, the stock worn with scattered patches of filler, chipping at upper-right edge along barrel, with a 7" crack at right-butt. Action is inoperative, bore appears clean with very good rifling. Est.: $350-$550. (Antique)

Walnut halfstock has brass scrolled trigger guard with pineapple front finial, crescent buttplate with faceted tang, German silver "anchor" sideplate, pewter nose cap, two iron ferrules for a hardwood ramrod (missing). Mfg'd ca. 1840s-60s. Condition is very good, showing 85% smooth barrel brown, erosion in nipple area, gray gunmetal lock, and age-toned fittings. U.S. Harpers Ferry Model 1816 Flintlock Musket, Altered to Percussion Fowler, NVSN, 12 ga., 38" round barrel, "V/P/(eaglehead)" at breech, cone-in-breech alteration, brass bead front sight, part of ferrule for ramrod (missing) under muzzle. Beveled lockplate has filled brass pan remnant, "(Federal Eagle)/US" ahead of military style hammer, "Harpers/Ferry/1830" vertically behind. Walnut stock comb was reduced, lacks buttplate, was shortened ahead of lower band (spring and ramrod channels partly remain). Condition is good as configured, the metal cleaned to generally smooth "armory bright", with erosion in nipple area and very good markings. Stock is sound and smooth with "EB/3" (possibly inspector Elizur Bates) oval cartouche opposite lock. Action is strong, smoothbore shows overall moderate erosion. Est.: $300-$400. (Antique)

Top-break Revolver, #75234, .30 CF cal., 3'' round barrel with integral blade front and barrel latch notch rear sights, marked with maker's name on top rib; 5-shot fluted round cylinder with automatic ejection; solid frame with large front hinge and integral gripstraps marked ''75234'' on triggerguard loop; two-piece mother-of-pearl grips. Originally finished in nickel plate with blued triggerguard and case hardened hammer and trigger. Condition is very good. Barrel, cylinder and frame retain approx. 65% flaking and dulling nickel with dark erosion at breech area, triggerguard with 45% blue, hammer and trigger with muted case colors; edges and markings are sharp. Grips show brilliant luster, one tiny chip at top right and no cracks. Action functions well in both single- and double actions; bore shows mild etching with defined rifling. (C&R) (2) S&W Model 1-1/2 Top-break Spurtrigger Revolver, #73389, .32 CF cal., 3.5'' round barrel with integral blade front and barrel latch notch rear sights, marked with maker's name, address and 1865-77 patent dates on top rib; 5-shot fluted round cylinder with automatic ejection; solid frame with large front hinge, spurtrigger and integral gripstraps marked ''73389'' on butt; two-piece checkered black hard rubber grips with entwined ''S&W'' logo at top. Originally finished in nickel plate with case hardened hammer and trigger. Condition is fine. Barrel, cylinder and frame retain approx. 80% peppering and dulling nickel with losses mainly at right side of barrel and knackering at butt; hammer and trigger with muted case colors; edges and markings are sharp. Grips show wear to design and checkering, perhaps a later coat of varnish, and no losses. Action functions well; bore shows mild etching with defined rifling.Est.: $150-$300/lot. (Both Antique)

Condition is very good, with functioning spring/cutoff, no seam separations, one impression and several minor ones, traces of original lacquer. 2) Unmarked Pocket Pistol size 4-5/8"x2" (incl. spout), copper body embossed on both sides with a leaf/vine motif. Condition is near fine, with smooth spring/cutoff, no seam separations, scattered minor impressions, 80% original lacquer (bright in places on collar). 3) "G.&J.W. Hawksley/Sheffield" Rifle size 8"x3-3/8" (incl. graduated spout), copper body embossed with ornate acanthus leaf design, and four suspension rings. Vintage Assayer's Balance Scale by Schaar & Company, Chicago, Illinois. This vintage scale is encased in a rectangular oak case with glass panels and stands on adjustable brass feet. The front page of the case is internally counter-weighted to be lifted vertically by a metal handle. Inside, a brass beam balance with two pans suspended from curved wires provides precise measurement. At the base of the stand a white composite plate with vertical markings and the company's name. The scale was used to weigh an initial sample of crushed ore for assay. The box provides an accurate measurement by reducing air flow and protecting the process from the elements. The center beam telescopes from a brass knob on the exterior and a push button removes the base support when the actual weighing process is conducted. Lot includes all the accessories and a set of grain weights by Webster Scale Mfg., Sebring, Florida. This piece is a fine scientific instrument from the turn of the century in its original casing. Antique Voland & Van Zelm Apothecary/Gold Scale with Glass Case. Scale is in fine overall condition with accessories and a period glass case, with one glass side panel broken and a newer sliding plexi glass panel in the front. Assayer's button scales were used by assayers of precious metals during the assaying process. In the final stages, a small "button" of precious metal was obtained and weighed in order to determine the precious metal content of the ore per ton mined. This scale displays an original label marked "VOLAND & VAN ZELM/NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y." Sitting on a hardwood pedestal with a single drawer, the main beam telescopes via a control knob on the front of the box. The base is marked "R 4080" and "Capt. W? U.S. Ord Dept." in pencil. An interesting piece of Gold Country memorabilia. Est.: $200-$300.

Unmarked Exposed Hammer Side-by-Side Black Powder Percussion Shotgun, NVSN, 12 ga., 32.5" solid rib barrels, dark patina finish, smooth hardwood one-piece straight grip stock, brass bead front sight, full-length wooden ramrod, double triggers, no markings except "J.D. SHRADER" carved into the right-side bottom of the stock at the trigger guard. Shotgun is in fair overall condition. Barrels have gone to a dark brown patina with damage at the end of the muzzle, scattered surface rust and erosion. Receiver is dark with traces of old toning color case hardening visible at the left rear. Left hammer is broken off and does not hold. Stock is fair with scrapes, gouges and loss of finish. Butt ends with a smooth steel buttplate showing moderate to heavy rust and providing a 14.5" LOP to the front trigger. Action is not working, bores are dark. Receiver has top thumb-latch, outside hammers, engraved lockplates marked "Eclipse Gun Co.", American retailer for the Belgian mfg'r. Mfg'd ca. 1900-1915. Condition is fair, the barrels showing overall rust, the receiver clean gunmetal with traces of case colors, sharp engraving and lettering. Splinter forend and pistol-grip buttstock are sound, show wear to fancy checkered panels. Actions are smooth, bores show occasional roughness. 2) Knickerbocker SXS Double, #39065, 12 ga., 30" barrels marked "Genuine Armory Steel Choke Bored" at left, have auto-extraction. Receiver has top thumb-latch, sliding safety, left side marked "Knickerbocker", right marked "Folsom Arms Co./New York". Condition is good retaining no original finishes but overall dark brown metal having scattered light roughness with fine edges and lettering. Splinter forearm and pistol-grip buttstock show wear to checkering, light marks, wood repair at upper left wrist. Actions are smooth, bores are fairly bright with scattered roughness. Distinctive "step-down" frame has central hammer, trigger guard with rear finger-grip. Walnut buttstock has shotgun buttplate, gun was made without a forend. Mfg'd 1870s-ca. 1895 with blued barrel, nickel-plated frame and buttplate. Condition is good to very good retaining no original finishes but a deep brown patination with scattered cleaned light-to-moderate erosion, good edges and fair markings. Stock is sound and smooth. Condition is good, the barrels showing twist pattern, brown patina and scattered roughness, else same with fine edges and markings. Stocks are sound showing worn checkering, forend lacks cap, buttstock sanded to bare wood, lacks buttplate. Actions are crisp, bores clean with light roughness. 2) Hopkins & Allen Double, #31233, 12 ga., 30" barrels have auto-extraction. Winchester Model 61 Slide-Action Takedown Rifle, #72058, .22 LR cal., 24" octagon barrel with 3/4 length magazine, blue finish, smooth walnut two-piece pistol grip stock, dovetailed blade front and standard elevator U-notch rear sight, and legible factory markings. Mfg'd 1946. Rifle is in good overall condition, retaining traces of original finish with the remainder going to dark patina. There are scratches, mars and scattered spots of light surface rust and erosion. Barrel edges remain sharp with some light corrosion along the wood line from poor storage. Receiver has drifted to dark patina with edgewear, light surface erosion, and a series of small dents along the top edge of the right side. Stock is good with scrapes, scratches, and loss of wood around the buttplate. Butt ends with a checkered steel shotgun buttplate, providing a 13.5" LOP. Bore is very good with well-defined rifling and the action functions well, locking up securely. A scarce octagon barrel Winchester Model 61 that would benefit from some TLC. Stock is smooth with 99% finish. Action is crisp, bore is bright with sharp rifling. 2) NVSN, .22 S-L-LR RF cal., 20" barrel has bead-blade front and adjustable notch rear sights. Oil-finished walnut semi-pistol grip halfstock has blued trigger guard, checkered Winchester buttplate. Condition is fine, retaining 75% thinning/darkening blue, bright bolt. Lot of (2) Winchester Bolt Action Single Shot Rifles: 1) Winchester Model 60, NVSN, .22 S-L-LR cal., 23" barrel, blue finish, smooth wood one-piece pistol grip stock, dovetailed blade front and standard elevator U-notch rear sights. Mfg'd 1930-1934. Rifle is in good overall condition displaying traces of original blue finish drifting to an even gray patina. Barrel shows some loss of finish at the muzzle with minor scrapes and marks. Factory markings remain legible with Winchester "WP" proofs on the barrel and front ring. Stock is good with indentations and handling marks. Sling swivels have been removed and the holes left vacant. Butt ends with a Winchester marked checkered hard rubber buttplate providing a 13.25" LOP. Bore is very good with well-defined rifling and the action functions well on this Winchester single shot, desirable with the 23" barrel. 2) Winchester Model 68, NVSN, .22 S-L-LR cal., 27" barrel, blue finish, smooth walnut one-piece pistol grip stock, finger groove forend, chrome bolt handle, hooded steel bead blade front and Winchester aperture sight at the rear of the receiver (no rear sight). Mfg'd 1934-1946. Rifle is in fine overall condition, retaining 90%-95% toning factory blue finish with light wear at the muzzle, scrapes, and scattered light surface rust. Trigger guard shows thinning finish going to gray patina. Factory markings are clear with sharp Winchester "WP" proofs on the barrel and front ring. Stock is fine with minor marks and light scrapes, primarily on the buttstock. Butt ends with a Winchester marked checkered hard rubber buttplate providing a 13.5" LOP. Receiver shows thinning finish drifting to brown patina with edgewear and small marks. Stock is very good with indentations, scrapes and oil staining. Canadian Military Marked H. W. Cooey Machine & Arms Bolt Action WW II Era Single Shot Training Rifle, NVSN, .22 LR cal., 27" barrel, blue finish, smooth two-piece full-length stock intended to imitate the Enfield SMLE, sling swivels, two barrel bands, protected blade front and standard elevator U-notch rear sights, receiver sight removed with the base retained, sharp factory markings with a Canadian "Broad Arrow" proof and the "67" on the front ring and stamped into the pistol grip on the stock. Mfg'd for the military from 1939-1944 and later for the public until approx. 1949. Rifle is in fine overall condition, retaining 90%-95% toning factory finish, with light corrosion/surface rust on the muzzle and around the sights. There are intermittent scratches along the barrel with light surface rust on the receiver, heavier on the trigger guard. Stock is fine with a crisp military added serial number "A9749" added at the pistol grip, with a lozenge-shaped Canadian "Broad Arrow" proof just ahead of the number. There is even rack wear along the right side of the stock, from the action to the first barrel band. Butt ends with a smooth steel buttplate, providing a 13.25" LOP. Bore is very good with well-defined rifling, and the action is crisp on this scarce WWII example of a Canadian Trainer, intended to duplicate the Enfield SMLE service rifles. Est.: $400-$600.
