Mameluke Dynasty Islamic Copper Pitcher Vase

Lot # 306 (Sale Order: 271 of 708)

For your consideration is this Mameluke Dynasty Islamic Copper Pitcher Vase fragment, circa 11th - 14th century AD. Procured in Lashkar Gah, Afghanistan 1969-1972. Proven...moreance: the Owen D. Mort, Jr. Collection. Owen David Mort was an American engineer who amassed an impressive collection throughout his worldwide travels. His collection has included art, artifacts and other historical items from which he has donated to museums at the University of Utah and the Snite Museum of Art at the University of Notre Dame. Donations also include Afghan, Indian, Mughal, Parthian, Persian and Far East Asian art and artifacts. In the Mameluke period, luxury objects were produced in specialized workshops. Such production was fueled by the strong tradition of patronage across the Mameluke domains of Egypt, Syria, and the Hijaz. With the construction of new religious buildings such as mosques and madrasas, and also with secular urban expansion, there was an increased demand for the manufacture of both practical and ornamental objects. The program of urban and cultural expansion stimulated production of glass and metalwork. The Mameluke (also spelled Mamluk) Dynasty (Sultanate) was a dynasty which ruled Delhi Sultanate as well as held political and military power most notably in Egypt, but also in the Levant, Iraq, and India. Metalwork has always been to India what ceramics are to China. During the fabled Mughal age, the craftsmen of the Sultans and Rajahs of India produced an astonishing variety of objects in gold and gold enamel, silver, brass, bronze, gilt copper and the Deccani alloy known as bidri. The finest of these are among the most striking and poetic utilitarian wares ever made, in addition to being of the most outstanding technical refinement. This pitcher / vase fragment features hand chased and embossed with Islamic thuluth calligraphy, bird, floral and geometric designs in Mameluke style. Thuluth script is a medieval Islamic style of handwritten alphabet. It is a large and elegant, cursive script, used in medieval times on mosque decorations, and it was used to write sura headings, religious inscriptions, and princely titles and epigraphs. According to the Department of Islamic Art at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, "Geometric patterns make up one of the three nonfigural types of decoration in Islamic art, which also include calligraphy and vegetal patterns. Whether isolated or used in combination with nonfigural ornamentation or figural representation, geometric patterns are popularly associated with Islamic art, largely due to their anionic quality. These abstract designs not only adorn the surfaces of monumental Islamic architecture but also function as the major decorative element on a vast array of objects of all types. While geometric ornamentation may have reached a pinnacle in the Islamic world, the sources for both the shapes and the intricate patterns already existed in late antiquity among the Greeks, Romans, and Sasanians in Iran. Islamic artists appropriated key elements from the classical tradition, then complicated and elaborated upon them in order to invent a new form of decoration that stressed the importance of unity and order. The significant intellectual contributions of Islamic mathematicians, astronomers, and scientists were essential to the creation of this unique new style." This pitcher / vase is a heavy gauge copper, the top spout and large portion of the top is missing, handle is missing. Splits and corrosion damage observed. Greenish oxidation patina noted throughout along with original copper gilt. Measures 9"H x 6.5"W, 4" diameter foot base; weight is 2lb 4oz.*

Songye Nkishi Power Fetish Figurines, DR Congo

Lot # 307 (Sale Order: 272 of 708)

Featured in this lot are Two (2) Songye Nkishi Power Fetish Hand Carved Figurines from the Congo, circa mid 1900s. Provenance: the Owen D. Mort, Jr. Collection. Owen Davi...mored Mort was an American engineer who amassed an impressive collection throughout his worldwide travels. His collection has included art, artifacts and other historical items from which he has donated to museums at the University of Utah and the Snite Museum of Art at the University of Notre Dame. The Songye people, sometimes written Songe, are a Bantu ethnic group from the central Democratic Republic of the Congo. Called Nkishi (power figure), these kinds of small statues were used for personal family or individual use and were the result two different talented specialists: the ritual “priest” (nganga) with beneficial powers and the carver. Originally from Shaba in the Democratic Republic of Congo, the Songye are related to the Luba with whom they share common ancestors. These figurines retain the specifics of the Songye statuary, with the appearance of the Kifwebe mask, the bulging belly to rest hands, stocky legs, spread, semi-flexed, supported by broad feet (in the case of the standing fetish). These home/personal protection fetishes are among the most prized in Africa. Much larger Nkishi statues were commissioned by chiefs and elders to benefit the entire community and were not the property of a single individual. The creation of a Nkishi was a public event that brought together the community, a skilled carver and experienced nganga trained ritual practitioner; the community was responsible for cutting the tree selected for the carving. These Nikishi Power Fetishes are striking in appearance and showcase the detailed skill of the artisan. The standing fetish is 3.5"H, the fetish with the striped horn protrusion is 4"H; total weight U6oz.*

Pony and Virginia City Montana Ephemera 1890-1895

Lot # 308 (Sale Order: 273 of 708)

"Featured in this lot is this Pony and Virginia City Montana ephemera collection of receipts and invoices from the Isdell Mercantile Company and S.R. Buford & Company in...more Montana circa 1890-1895. This ephemera comes from during the first 5+ years of Montana's statehood! The Isdell Mercantile Company was created in 1869 by N. J. Isdell in the town of Pony, Montana. Once called the ""metropolis of the Madison Valley"" by the Madisonian, Pony was a boom town created by major quartz discoveries in 1875. The mercantile was incorporated in 1892. By 1900 the town had a schoolhouse, bank, newspaper, hotels, and several saloons. This growth, made possible by wealth from local mining operations, allowed the small store to prosper. The Isdell Mercantile provided hardware, mining supplies, and various dry goods to the community. The town, which once had a population over 1,000 in 1900, was completely abandoned by the 1940s. The mercantile went out of business when the quartz mining was halted in the Pony area. Simeon R. Buford a Virginia City, Montana merchant, stage line operator, and rancher, opened the region’s largest grocery store here in the Montana Territory in 1878. Buford’s was the supply point for most of southwestern Montana, including the infant “Butte City.” In later years, Butte’s huge warehouses would, in turn, supply Buford’s own business. The ephemera includes advertisements, personal memos, invoices, and receipts from hundreds of stores, banks, law firms from Montana and across the United States. The documents are all in amazingly preserved condition exhibiting wear and age tanning from their antique age and use. Mounted in hardcover leather folios, respectively measuring 9.25"" x 14.75""L x 4.5""D and 9.25""W x 14.75""L x 2.5""D. Combined weight 13lb, 12oz.
