Lot # 702 (Sale Order: 654 of 708)

Offered in this lot is a Rare 1913 First Edition of "The Quest Of The Fish-Dog Skin" by James Willard Schultz, illustrated with black and white plates by George Varian, p...moreublisher Houghton Mifflin Company Boston and New York, The Riverside Press Cambridge. Original owner signature and 1913 date on front endpaper. "The Quest of the Fish-Dog Skin" is a story of the adventures of two boys: an Indian boy and a white boy. These two set forth from the lodges of the Blackfeet, in the company of an older Indian who acts as their guide, philosopher, and friend, on a quest to the salt water to find the medicine-animal that is called "fish-dog". One of the boys knew from books this was some sort of a seal. This boy was, in fact, J. W. Schultz, whose first book, "My Life as an Indian," was published in 1907. As a boy and young man he lived with the Indians on the upper Missouri in the days before the white man had penetrated the far West, and his writings about the Indians are based upon an intimate knowledge of their native life. James Willard Schultz, or Apikuni, (1859-1947) was an American author, explorer, Glacier National Park guide, fur trader and historian of the Blackfeet Indians. He operated a fur trading post at Carroll, Montana and lived among the Pikuni tribe during the period 1880-82. He was given the name Apikuni by the Pikuni chief, Running Crane. Apikuni in Blackfeet means "Spotted Robe." Schultz is most noted for his 37 books, most about Blackfoot life, and for his contributions to the naming of prominent features in Glacier National Park. This tan coloured cloth bound illustrated hardcover is in fair condition, slight scuffing noted to cover edges, cover illustration front top corner missing, loose spine. Intact pages exhibit age tanning and very slight foxing. Measures 5.5"W x 8.25"L x 1"D, weight approx. 1lb, 2oz.

Sterling & Morgan Hill Poppy Jasper Pendant

Lot # 716 (Sale Order: 668 of 708)

Featured in this lot is this Morgan Hill Poppy Jasper set in a sterling pendant from Morgan Hill, California near the foothills of the Santa Cruz Mountains. Poppy Jasper ...moreis a trade name used to describe some orbicular jaspers, which are jaspers whose pattern consist of orb or sphere shapes similar to "flower poppies". Poppy Jasper has been found in four places close to the town of Morgan Hill, however none of them are now actively being mined because the stone is only found on private or protected grounds. The Poppy Jasper found in that area is a “brecciated jasper.” Breccia is a rock made up of sharp fragments embedded in clay and sand. Poppy Jasper is often found in areas with seismic and tectonic activity. As this type of jasper forms, there are tiny cracks and fissures that open in the stone and then fill-in again over time with indigenous materials. As the stone repeats this process, it shatters and “heals-through” many times over, lending to the crackled and speckled look often associated with the stone. The oval cut Poppy Jasper shows colors of red/brown, black, mustard yellow, white and grey. It is set in a nice, sterling pendant showing small loops around the edges and is marked on the back twice reading, "Sterling" and "Ster". The piece shows good condition overall with little to no wear present and no signs of damage. The Poppy Jasper measures 7/8" L x 3/4" W, while the entire piece measures 1 5/8" L x 7/8" W x 1/4" D. It weighs 6.6 grams.
