HEDDON “SCHMELTZER’S BASS” DOWAGIAC UNDERWATER MINNOW IN BOX

Lot # 1004 (Sale Order: 4 of 622)

3” Length. A wonderful Trade Minnow retailed by Schmelzer Arms Co of Kansas City, MO, this is combo is striking for a number of reasons. The first thing one notices is the extraordinary condition of both the lure and the box, they are strong Excellent/Excellent Plus. The next thing that impresses is the highly unusual Green Crackleback finish extending all the way down the sides and converging to only expose a thin strip of the white belly paint. The bait employs the South Bend style blunted-tip props typically found on Heddon trade minnows but features two sets of hand painted gills as you’d find in the main line of Heddon baits. The glass eyes are perfect, the belly weight is completely sealed under the paint, and the hardware is nearly spotless. The #11-SB “Schmelzer’s BASS” box is clean, solid, crisp, and possibly the nicest known.

HEDDON 6509X ZARAGOSSA IN BLUE SCALE

Lot # 1007 (Sale Order: 7 of 622)

4 - 1/4” Length. A collector favorite, the Zaragossa was introduced in 1920 and the wooden model ran in various iterations up until 1971. During that time, Blue Scale was never a cataloged color for this bait, and on the rare occurrence you do find one, they’re usually heavily fished. Not this one though; it only has a few age lines and pointers, and grades about Excellent Minus. It has solid glass eyes and the L-Rig hardware dates it to around the late 1920s.

STUNNING HEDDON MINNOW WITH EXPERIMENTAL FINISH FROM THE FACTORY BOARD

Lot # 1015 (Sale Order: 15 of 622)

2 - 3/4" length. This c. 1904 or 05 bait utilizes the body of a Heddon 100 Dowagiac Minnow, but sports five hooks instead of the normal three. The side hooks are uniquely attached with handmade brass staples upon which hang non-nickel-plated hooks. Deeply inset white iris glass eyes are perfect. The finish is nothing short of amazing: a white base with sapphire blue sides and back, having scattered red dots and teardrops that interact with the blue paint in such a way as to produce sort of a corona effect. Really one of the most visually striking lures in the collection. It is unique and commands a place of prominence in any collection.

EXPERIMENTAL HEDDON UNDERWATER MINNOW

Lot # 1022 (Sale Order: 22 of 622)

3” Length. Having a flattened, oval-shaped body and finished in unusual yellow with interspersed black and red dots, this striking bait originating from the Heddon Factory Archives dates to about 1905. Made well before the Dummy Double was introduced, you can see Heddon’s process of innovation at work here, with both side treble hooks having one hook point turned in on itself. Also not found on any of their production baits is the partially embedded, pinned ball belly weight. The minnow would run as photographed, despite the gill marks appearing on the forehead in this orientation, an indicator that it was used for research only. Both white iris glass eyes are solid and the condition is Very Good Plus, with a hint of oxidation and verdigris on the hardware. The feathered rear treble is showing wear from use. You can find more on this unique and important piece of fishing history in the Heddon Legacy book on page 178.
