(A) JAPANESE THREE BARREL SWIVEL BREECH PALANQUIN MATCHLOCK PISTOL.

Lot # 1412 (Sale Order: 305 of 345)

For a nearly identical example, see Stone's Glossary, pg. 332, which shows two examples that were subsequently donated to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. Since then, this cataloguer is aware of less than five other examples. Guns like this were used with palanquins, where their compact form made them the equivalent to a coach gun. This example is a true Edo period example, with three barrels each individually fitted with notch front and rear sights and pans with brass covers, and joined by a retaining band sleeved over the muzzles and trued by a central rod. Each barrel also has a small detent at the rear, which is caught by a brass spring mounted to tang to hold prevent the barrels from rotating unless manually rotated. Brass recoil shield. Classic and iconic Japanese matchlock system with exposed trigger. Stock has three floral inserts on left side, and is the classic ergonomic form. CONDITION: Excellent. Barrels are a smooth, even chocolate patina, with some evidence of turn lines on the barrels and detent ring. Spring to prevent rotation is weak from age and use, but slots appropriately. Stock excellent with some handling marks and impressions, but solid and whole; there is one grain check on rear of grip. Mechanically fine, somewhat soft, bores excellent. An extremely rare example, virtually unknown outside of institutions. Barrel Length: 9 - 1/2" Caliber/Bore: .40 Smoothbore FFL Status: Antique Manufacturer: Japanese Model: Matchlock Serial Number: NSN

A SUE-KOTO KATANA BY KANABO MASATSUGU, WITH KOSHIRAE AND NBTHK PAPERS.

Lot # 1415 (Sale Order: 307 of 345)

Masatsugu worked in the 1500s during the time of the Great Civil War. Many swords during this period were mass-produced and basically used by low-level warriors who had no skill, making quality pieces from the time scarce. The Kanabo school, also known as Kinbo, made blades of good quality. Masatsugu is the primary smith from this school and there are Juyo Token by him. Fujishiro rates Masatsugu as a Chusaku smith, and his cutting ability is ranked as wazamono. He was also greatly skilled at making yari, especially jumonji yari. The temperline on this particular blade is nioi deki midare, which resembles the work of the older Yamashiro tradition. The shape of the sword is classic from this time period with a slightly extended point and sakizori. The hada is coarse, but since the blade has a good old polish, the roughness is tamed. Original tang, thus keeping the classic shape of an all original katana from the Muromachi period. With a set of rustic koshirae, saya with a textured lacquer not dissimilar from wood grain and a blue sageo. Tsuba a soft chocolate with incised and gilt designs of florals and hitsu-ana plugged with shakudo. Fuchi and kashira with designs of clouds accented in gold, and menuki in the form of florals. CONDITION: Blade is in a good older polish, with a spot or two of looseness from age, that shows off the features well. Koshirae with some handling marks and impressions, tsuba and fuchi-kashira more heavily rubbed with much of the gilding lifted off the tsuba, giving the set a lovely lived-in appearance. Very top of tsuka-ito is unravelled and needs conservation. A good example of a true working sword for a time when your sword was a life-and-death companion, from a good maker, already packaged and papered. Accessories: Koshirae, sword bag x2 Blade Length: 69.5cm Overall Length: 37 - 7/8" Paperwork: NBTHK TH papers

IMPORTANT MASATAKA MADE KATANA, PRESENTED TO YAHACHI TANABE BEFORE THE BATTLE OF MIDWAY, WHERE HE SU

Lot # 1416 (Sale Order: 308 of 345)

This is likely one of the most important World War II Japanese swords currently available for public ownership. Forged by Masataka at the Minatogawa shrine, and signed “(Kikusui mon) Minatogawa Jinja Masataka”, dated the 4th month during the 17th year of Showa (April 1942), and, critically, signed “Igo Kancho Tanabe Yahachi Chusa”, which translates to “I-Class Captain Lieutenant Commander Yahachi Tanabe”. The date makes it extremely likely that this sword was with Tanabe when he sunk the Yorktown at the Battle of Midway in June of 1942, as he was presented the sword in April and left on orders that included the Battle of Midway in May. Yahachi Tanabe was born in 1907 and joined the Imperial Naval Academy in 1925, graduating in 1928. He was promoted until 1934, when he volunteered for submarine service as a Sub-Lieutenant First Class. By 1938, he was a full Lieutenant and attended the Submarine School for officers. He served on a number of submarines as a communications staff officer, commanding officer, and communications officer until he was given command of I-168 in January 1942. While he had missed the initial engagement at Midway as he was assigned to scouting duty, on June 5th, he was ordered to join the cruisers Mikuma, Mogami, Suzuyu, and Kumano, to help soften Midway for infantry landing, but the submarine was quickly spotted and they were forced to submerge. While submerged, the cruisers were redeployed, and I-168 bade its time, still observing. When it was safe to redeploy their radio, they found that several of their cruisers were sunk, and they had been given new orders: to locate and sink the Yorktown, which had been crippled during the fighting. On June 6th, I-168 spotted Yorktown approximately 11 miles away and dived to engage. I-168 slipped past the defensive cordon that had been established by six American destroyers: Benham, Hughes, Gwin, Monaghan, and Hammann, and the minesweeper Vireo, which was towing Yorktown, and backed out to an effective firing range for her torpedoes. I-168 was carrying somewhat older 446-lb warheads, rather than the newer and more effective 991-lbers, so Tanabe decided that instead of spreading out his torpedoes, as submarine warfare typically called for, he was going to only engage two points on the Yorktown, with the second salvo of missiles following directly behind the first, to ensure a catastrophic hit on the already crippled ship. At 1:30pm, he struck Yorktown with two torpedoes and Hammann with one, which ultimately sunk both ships and won Japan the only two victories of the Battle of Midway. Tanabe and the remaining destroyers engaged in a long game of cat-and-mouse, which culminated in a destroyer striking I-168 with a depth charge that heavily damaged the submarine, but did not sink it. The submarine was eventually forced to resurface, only to be spotted by two of the destroyers, who began to engage I-168, forcing them to submerge again. In his article on his experiences, Tanabe was not sure if the destroyers were out of depth charges or if they did not want to engage the submarine at night, but the destroyers disengaged and I-168 limped home to Kure, where they were greeted with a huge celebration, including a radio report of the attack from Emperor Hirohito, and Tanabe was given command of the brand new I-776 and allowed to pick his own crew. Tanabe continued his exploits throughout the war, including surviving an attack in I-776 that culminated in an audience with Hirohito in person, taught at the Submarine School, and was promoted to commander. After the Japanese surrender, he was one of the naval officers who planned MacArthur’s visit to Atsugi, and retired in 1945. He wrote his article I Sank the Yorktown at Midway (a copy of which is included), in May 1963, and passed away at his home in Saitama on April 29th, 1990. The sword is ubu (uncut) and the nagasa (from tip to rear notch of cutting edge) measures 69.2cm. The sword is in old polish that obfuscates some features, but appears to have a fairly regular gunome with plentiful activity including visible ji-nie and sunagashi. Hada (surface grain) is a little indistinct, but looks like a predominant masame with some areas of mokume. The sword also has horimono in the form of gomabashi and bonji on the right side. Gold foil habaki carved with the design of falling rain. Click here to see the full description.

A SAMURAI DAISHO OF MINO SWORDS, WITH BLADES BY KANEMICHI AND KANEYOSHI, IN OUTSTANDING SAMEGAWA KIS

Lot # 1417 (Sale Order: 309 of 345)

Literally "long and short" the daisho was the pair of swords worn by samurai, mandated in 1629 and restricted to samurai in 1683. This daisho is of sufficient quality and composition that it undoubtedly was made for a high ranking samurai. The Dai (katana) is made by the famous smith Tango no Kami Kanemichi. Kanemichi is a representative smith from the Kyoto School, which had many great smiths that were all related, including Yoshimichi, Kinmichi, Hisamichi and Masatoshi. Kanemichi is the second son of the nidai Yoshimichi, and is ranked as a Jo-saku maker by Fujishiro and his cutting ability is rated as Ryowazamono. This blade has a very nice midare hamon done in nie deki. The hamon contains nice nie hataraki and is a very healthy example of his work. The jigane is a mix of mokume and itame. The blade has a strong, wide shape befitting that type of blade used by a high level samurai. Tang is ubu but slightly machi raised. The wakizashi or Sho is the companion sword to the longer katana. It was needed when the long sword had to be given up on a visit or in some other situation. The wakizashi hardly left the warrior’s side. This wakizashi is made by Kaneyoshi from Bushu. The blade has the hamon made of a gunome notare resembling the works of the Muromachi Bizen School. There is activity of kinsuji done very nicely that flows through the hamon. The blade is in good polish showing all the characteristics clearly. With a cracked ice gold foil wrapped habaki. A nice match to the Dai. Tang is suriage but retains the full signature. Koshirae are matching Samegawa Kisezaya (wrapped in rayskin) mounts, with all the earmarks of a true daisho, with matching tsuba depicting relief carved lilies. Matching Fuchi kashira in the Mino style with relief insects and florals signed by Mitsunaka. Menuki in the form of florals, with high quality sa-me and black tsuka-ito. The sho mounts for the wakizashi are also slotted for a kozuka, which has a decpition of an open gate to a bountiful field of flowers. Both blades bear attributions by Honnami Koson on both the shirasaya and the tsunagi. Koson was a very well respected appraiser from the turn of the century. He is from the lineage of the famous Honnami family of appraisers who served the Tokugawa family for many years. Other paperwork includes NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon and Tokubetsu Kicho papers for Kanemichi, and both Hozon and Kicho papers for Kaneyoshi. With matching sword bags that show great age. CONDITION: Both blades are in good polish that shows off the features well. A few spots of looseness and some age related darkness that do not detract. Mounts are excellent with some rubs, but sa-me is still intact and tight. Horn mouth of kozuka slot appears to have been reglued. This is an absolutely fabulous daisho, much better than the normally found composite sets, with blades and mounts befitting a high level samurai. Accessories: Koshirae, 4x bags Blade Length: (A) 73.2cm (B) 50.3cm Overall Length: (A) 40" (B) 28 - 3/8" Paperwork: NBTHK Papers

Lot # 1418 (Sale Order: 310 of 345)

Suriage but, even though shortened, this sword retains its strong stance and has a complete signature for Tadahiro. Tadahiro is ranked as Jo-Jo Saku and his swords are rated as O-wazamono for their cutting ability. (C) 2025 FEGA MASTER ENGRAVED COLT PYTHON DOUBLE ACTION REVOLVER BY MIKE DUBBER, BARRY LEE HANDS, BR

Lot # 1420 (Sale Order: 312 of 345)

This revolver is the 2025 auction gun to support the Firearms Engravers Guild of America, showcasing the work of some of the finest engravers working today. Organized by Marianne Kelley, this gun was engraved by Mike Dubber, Barry Lee Hands, and Brian Powley, with finishing by John Powers. John Powers executed the bluing in a deep, rich finish, with nitre bluing applied to the screws, trigger, hammer, and cylinder release. Mike Dubber, one of Colt's Master Engravers, adorned the barrel and frame with a gorgeous, almost three-dimensional acanthus scroll set against a finely executed punch-dot background, achieving approximately D-class coverage. His work extends to the underside of the barrel, where he meticulously engraved "FEGA 2025," as well as an absolutely striking Rampant Colt on the left side of the frame, rendered with phenomenal bulino detail that brings the design to life. Brian Powley, a second Colt Master Engraver, contributed his artistry by applying elegant gold borders and gold embellishments to the original factory lettering on the barrel in lustrous 24-karat gold, adding a refined contrast to the deep blued finish. Barry Lee Hands, another Colt Master, engraved the cylinder with sprays of well-cut acanthus florals on a punch-dot background over each chamber. The revolver is fitted with giraffe bone grips featuring deep-set Colt medallions. It is housed in a custom-made case with "COLT" on the lid in contrasting wood colors. The lid is laser-engraved with FEGA’s emblem and a listing of the artisans who worked on this firearm. Accompanied by a FEGA letter signed by those involved, further indicating that the gun was manufactured in 1974. CONDITION: Excellent, as custom embellished. Some extremely minor handling marks and some surface spotting, mostly visible on the gold. Mechanically fine, with a bore featuring strong rifling and some very minor frosting. Grips are loose. Case is excellent with a repair at joint at back left. A fabulous gun. Accessories: Case Barrel Length: 6" Caliber/Bore: .357 Magnum FFL Status: Curio & Relic Manufacturer: Colt Model: Python Paperwork: FEGA Letters Serial Number: E83204
