(A) CARVED FLINTLOCK KENTUCKY RIFLE WITH SILVER INLAID BARREL, ATTRIBUTED TO ABRAHAM SCHWEITZER

Lot # 2038 (Sale Order: 38 of 420)

Abraham Schweitzer worked in Chambersburg, Pennsylvania circa 1820. Gun has octagon smoothbore barrel with rifle sights and unusual diamond inlays in what appears to be silver on all exposed barrel flats throughout the length of the barrel. Behind rear sight there is a tomahawk between two hearts, a plugged slot for a sight, and what appears to be a knife between two hearts followed by a "S" and an "I", also in what appears to be silver. These decorations are not known to be common on Schweitzer's rifles, but it is unknown who placed them there. With the horsehead patchbox, style of relief carving and stock architecture, this writer can safely attribute this rifle to Abraham Sweitzer. Gun has Germanic style flint lock with heavy brass sideplate. Full curly maple stock with silver thumbpiece and "Hunter's Star" inlay on the cheekpiece and raised relief carving behind the cheek piece and around wrist. Gun has incised carving along the forestock. Brass furniture with patchbox release in toeplate. CONDITION: Gun has been heavily restored with a foot of wood added to the forestock. Tang has been changed and a piece of wood added in the wrist. Small hunks of wood have been added in horsehead and around the patchbox. Lock is a modern replacement and gun has been reconverted with some wood burned out at top. There are mismatched ramrod pipes suggesting replacement with tailpipe worn almost through. Double set triggers function correctly. Interesting rifle. Barrel Length: 43 - 1/4" Caliber/Bore: .56 Smoothbore FFL Status: Antique Manufacturer: Unkown Model: Kentucky Rifle Serial Number: NSN

(A) NARRAGANSETT ARMS REPLICA FERGUSON BREECH LOADING FLINTLOCK RIFLE.

Lot # 2043 (Sale Order: 43 of 420)

There is perhaps no Revolutionary War era firearms design so famous as Patrick Ferguson's breech loading rifle. Designed around 1774 and patented in 1776, these rifles utilize a screw plug breech which threads downward using the trigger guard as a crank, allowing for easier and faster loading. British troops fielded the Ferguson in limited numbers during the Revolution, just 100 officially procured for the army. Surviving examples are exceedingly scarce and highly prized by museums and collectors. Even reproductions are difficult to find, this example is numbered 073 out of the 250 produced by Narragansett Arms circa the 1990s. Rifle is finished in the white with replica proofs, including Patrick Ferguson's crown over "PF" at the breech. Blade front sight and 2-leaf rear. Stocked in figured walnut with a steel trigger guard and brass mounts. Includes blackened wood ramrod with brass tip. CONDITION: Very Good. Metal remains bright with some cleaned freckling on the lock plate and other evidence of light use. Stock has scattered light marks and an area of filler at the end of the lower tang. Crisp, well defined bore. Fine mechanics. Barrel Length: 33" Caliber/Bore: .65 Rifled FFL Status: Antique Manufacturer: Narragansett Arms Model: Ferguson Serial Number: 073
