(A) COLT MODEL 1878 CANADIAN MILITIA AND DEFENSE RIEL REBELLION DOUBLE ACTION REVOLVER.

Lot # 2184 (Sale Order: 182 of 420)

Manufactured in 1885, the same year that the Canadian Militia and Defense ordered 1001 Colt 1878 revolvers through New York Dealer Hartley & Graham. According to records, all were 7 - 1/2" nickel guns. The factory letter confirms this gun was shipped to H&G with 120 others on April 14, 1885, listed as 7 - 1/2" nickel finish with rubber grips. These guns were ordered to deal with the Riel Rebellion that erupted in 1885. All of these guns are identified by the "MD" and "ID" number stamp on each revolver. This one is stamped MD 231. This gun is now blue, or what is left of that finish, and the barrel has been shortened to 5 - 3/8" with the sight reset. After Riel, the guns were stored until they were reissued for use in the Boer War around 1900. It is believed that some of these were altered and then reissued much like the Artillery Colt Single Actions. Aside from finish and barrel, balance of gun is standard issue with gutta percha bird head grips and lanyard ring. The single line Colt barrel legend is partially legible. The cylinder has a matching number to frame. The shortened barrel is from a DFC inspected cavalry Colt SAA and is stamped "DFC P "and number "231" which matches the MD number on frame. The grips are not numbered. Inside frame has assembly number 670, but not found on loading gate. This catalog suspects that Colt used a 7 - 1/2" SAA barrel when assembled and sent to H&G simply to expedite the order using some DFC barrels on hand. It is interesting to note that this gun was part of a collection of Colt 1878 models recently imported from Canada. CONDITION: Very good. Gun is grey with flashes of blue but one can smell the wiped on finish. Grips are excellent. Muzzle shows holster wear. Action works fine. Bore is sharp. Accessories: Leather holster Barrel Length: 5 - 3/8" Caliber/Bore: .45 Colt FFL Status: Antique Manufacturer: Colt Model: 1878 Paperwork: Factory Letter Serial Number: 14765

(C) US MARKED WINCHESTER MODEL 1894 SPRUCE GUN SADDLE RING CARBINE.

Lot # 2198 (Sale Order: 196 of 420)

Having entered into World War I in 1917, Winchester attempted to solicit sales of 1894s to the government for homeland defense in addition to their Model 1917 rifle contracts. One such use was to protect the harvests of Sitka spruce in the Pacific Northwest, a key part of aircraft production at the time. The Aero Construction Squadrons were organized under the Signal Corps in 1918, later part of the Spruce Production Division. On December 29, 1917 an order for 1,800 1894s was placed by U.S. Army Ordnance Department, the guns falling into the 835000 to 853000 serial number range. This example is numbered 843744, falling into the center of the known range. It is correctly marked on the top of the receiver with "US" and ordnance bomb martial inspection marks. Large stamped "40" rack numbers also present on each side of the frame. Carbine is otherwise standard for the period. Fitted with a round blued nickel steel barrel and full length magazine tube retained by a pair of carbine bands. Tall pinned blade front sight and ladder rear. 2-piece plain walnut stock with a carbine butt plate. This example is listed among the known examples in Rick Hill's 2013 Winchester Arms Collector article "The WWI Spruce Guns: Martially Marked Winchester Model 1894 Carbines." CONDITION: Good. Barrel and magazine tube retain portions of fading blue with an overall dark gray patina. Receiver displays a gunmetal gray patina. Stocks appear lightly cleaned with some added finish and impressions throughout. Very good, strong and bright bore. Fine mechanics. A neat piece of WWI history. Barrel Length: 20" Caliber/Bore: .30-30 WCF FFL Status: Curio & Relic Manufacturer: Winchester Model: 1894 Serial Number: 843744
