US CIVIL WAR GILMORE MEDAL.

Lot # 2401 (Sale Order: 399 of 420)

Fine example of a Gilmore Medal with original ribbon, pin, and leather wallet that was awarded to Private Mathias Tyson, 3rd New York Light Artillery. Brass medal with engraved image of Fort Sumter surrounded by stars and facsimile signature of Major General Quincy Adams Gillmore on verso with dedication reading “For gallant and meritorious conduct.” The medal is attached to a suspension bar that exhibits the engraving "M. Theisen / Lt. Co. F. 3rd N.Y. Arty.". The Gillmore Medal was created and issued on the local authority of Major General Gillmore to those who exhibited gallantry and meritorious conduct during the operations before the Charleston campaign of 1863. The medal was considered an unofficial decoration but was permitted to be worn upon the uniforms of recipients. Gillmore was the first Union commander to order that his troops be fully integrated, and among the troops who marched with him in Charleston was the 54th Massachusetts Regiment, whose attack on Fort Wagner was dramatized in the 1989 motion picture Glory. The medal exhibits a pleasing patina with intact suspension bar and red silk ribbon. The wallet remains supple. When opened the wallet reveals ink writing that appears to read "Mathias Tyson 3, N.Y. / Arttil, Battery, F". Mathias Tyson enlisted at age 19 as a private and was mustered into Battery F of the 3rd New York Light Artillery on March 12, 1862. He mustered out on March 11, 1865. Tyson's name is obviously misspelled on the medal and he is also listed as "Matthias Thyson". CONDITION: Very good. Paperwork: Research

ATTRACTIVE AND MONUMENTAL WWII ERA REGISTRAR FOR THE NORFOLK NAVAL SHIPYARD.

Lot # 2402 (Sale Order: 400 of 420)

An immense painted registrar of ships built at the Norfolk Naval Shipyard. The painting features a list of ships which were constructed at the Norfolk Naval yard beginning with the first vessel, the Chesapeake Frigate in 1799 and ending with the Agile-class minesweeper Bulwark in 1953. The registrar is built of wood and is beautifully painted with a commanding spread-winged eagle perched on a fasces with Norfolk Naval Shipyard banner draped in front. Beneath the eagle is a flotilla with ships crafted by the staff at the shipyard. The rest of the painting is a long list of ships that were produced at the shipyard with names, classifications, and dates. The list is flanked by more ships with short descriptions of the vessels. Some of the noteworthy vessels are the Merrimac, USS Texas, USS Langley, USS Downes, and USS Alabama. The registrar was most likely assembled circa 1940s-1950s and was probably displayed in a reception hall to showcase the achievements of the facility. Assembled of wood boards that measure approximately 11 - 1/2" each, the overall measurement is approximately 96" x 53" x 4" including what appears to be the original frame. The colors remains vibrant with very little blemishes which do not detract from the splendor of the piece. Frame exhibits scattered scuffs and handling/storage wear but each blemish adds a pleasing amount of character to the overall appearance. Lines where the boards connect are visible in some areas. An excellent and ornate shipyard registrar that demands attention and would certainly be the centerpiece of a naval collection.
