US CIVIL WAR ESCUTCHEON.

Lot # 3320 (Sale Order: 318 of 341)

Service escutcheon of Civil War Brevet Major Alva J. Smith. The format is standard, with American eagle over a wreathed shield with the individual’s name in scroll at bottom, state seal at center, and appropriate branch insignia. Smith's service record is filled out by hand in gold on the four gold-bordered red cross branches that divide the blue shield. Smith enlisted as a private in Co. C, 4th New York Heavy Artillery on July 29, 1862 and was later promoted to corporal, then commissioned as a second lieutenant in 1863, and promoted to first lieutenant and later captain in 1864. He mustered out of service on September 26, 1865 and was breveted to major for gallant and meritorious conduct during the war. Smith's service record is impressive and all of his engagements are noted on escutcheon. It appears he was present during or around every major battle fought by the Army of the Potomac during the mid-late war years. This service escutcheon is beautifully painted on canvas and presents excellently. Contained in an old frame with nice patina and age throughout. There are a few small blemishes that do not detract from the display. CONDITION: Very good.
