TWO VERY RARE HEDDON BASSERS

Lot # 1001 (Sale Order: 1 of 680)

Top lure is a special-order 8509G All-Black Basser in Excellent condition. Perfect glass eyes and a clean “Head-on” dive plate. With that, and the fatter body, its likely production date is 1923. Only a handful of Bassers are known in this color. Fancy Green Back was only catalogued on the Basser during its introductory year, 1922. Its slimmer, tapered profile, along with the “Head-on” dive plate support this being an intro bait. The paint is approaching Excellent, but both eyes have hairlines. Item Dimensions: Each: 4" length.

HEDDON RAINBOW 101 MINNOW IN BLUE BORDER BOX

Lot # 1002 (Sale Order: 2 of 680)

The blue border box is by far one of Heddon’s hardest to find boxes, as they were only used in the 1912 season. This one is correctly marked on both end flaps and has “R.B.” written in pencil on one end. Some wear, especially at corners and edges and all seams remain solidly intact. There are some pinholes in the box bottom. The box grades Very Good or better. Housed inside is a very nice fat body minnow in Rainbow, with light agelines and a few flakes to the dark back stripe. It’s got perfect glass eyes, marked props, shiny hardware, and full paint on the belly weight. The minnow grades Excellent Minus. Item Dimensions: 2 - 7/8" length.

UNRIGGED HEDDON 704 MUSKY MINNOW FROM THE FACTORY ARCHIVE

Lot # 1005 (Sale Order: 5 of 680)

Truly, an incredible piece. No doubt, never having been rigged with hooks over its lifetime has preserved its pristine, Solid Red finish. The bait was made 1909-10 and Solid Red was never a catalogued option during that time, making this example even more special. All nickel-plated hardware except for the rear screw eye, which is brass and no markings on the spinners. Perfect glass eyes, four perfectly hidden belly weights, and a curious nickel-plate box swivel attached to the line tie. A unique and very special bait that can be seen on page 85 of The Heddon Legacy. Item Dimensions: 5 - 1/2" length.

HEDDON RIMLESS CUP SLOPENOSE

Lot # 1006 (Sale Order: 6 of 680)

According to the authors of The Heddon Legacy, at the time of writing there were only four known introductory Dowagiac Perfect Surface Casting Baits with rimless cups. This bait is considered to be the first lure produced commercially by Heddon and the book authors call this bait “too rare to value”. This example has the “chalky” white paint that debuted in 1902 and was quickly changed to the shinier white enamel later that year. The 2 pin friction collar has been sturdily seated in place for the last 120+ years, as has the gold-washed tail cap. A couple flakes to the underside of the nose, and this very important bait gets a grade of Excellent Minus Item Dimensions: 4 - 1/4" length.

THE GLASS-EYED GAMEFISHER FROM THE HEDDON LEGACY

Lot # 1024 (Sale Order: 24 of 680)

Found on page 122, the authors point out that the original Gamefisher patent drawing shows the bait with glass eyes. This L-rigged example also has no writing on the dive lip and is among just a very small handful of known examples in this form. Interestingly, this bait has no scales at the joints and the joint connectors are held by screws and not pins. There is a bit of scattered varnish flaking, and the Green Scale paint underneath is still in nice, Very Good Plus condition. Both glass eyes are blemish-free. An opportunity to own one of the rarest Gamefishers ever made. Item Dimensions: 4 - 1/2" length.
Found on page 122, the authors point out that the original Gamefisher patent drawing shows the bait with glass eyes. This L-rigged example also has no writing on the dive...more lip and is among just a very small handful of known examples in this form.
