16" X 10". Having a vividly drawn and colored cover with vignettes of Popeye, Katzenjammer Kids, Blondie, Dumb Dora, Just Kids, Polly and her Pals, and Annie Rooney. The inside pages and back cover devote one page to each character along with costumes and accessories to cut-out. "Little Mary Mixup and Her Friend Peggy" Drawn by R.M. Brinkerhoff, Saalfield, 1922 $300/500

12" x 9". Firm-backed paper doll and comic strip book featuring the mischievous little girl "Little Mary Mixup", originated in 1917 by American illustrator Robert Moore Brinkerhoff. The book featured Mary, Peggy, Bobbie and other little friends as paper dolls with a variety of costumes and accessories, and on alternate pages had comic strips of the same children in a variety of scenes and activities. Very good/excellent condition, binding loose on a few pages, uncut. Saalfield, 1922. The cartoon strip was so popular it continued until into the 1940s, then depicting "Little Mary" as grown-up. This early book is extremely rare....more

"Boots and Her Buddies" Paper Doll Book, "Best Dressed Girl in the Comics", Saalfield 1943 $200/400

With beautifully drawn front cover featuring the boudoir of Boots, along with three 10 1/2" paper dolls, and with another Boots paper doll on the back cover, along with an 11" gentleman (presumably Rod Ruggles whom she "married" two years after this book was published) and a 7" paper doll young girl with braids. Inside are six pages of costumes and accessories for all of the paper dolls, along with color-printed scenes from the comic strip. The strip, drawn by Edgar Martin, was syndicated and licensed by Stephen Slesinger, and appeared for more than three decades, so notable for its stylish fashions that Boots was sub-titled the "best dressed girl in the comics". #2460. "Girl Pilots of the Ferry Command" Paper Dolls, Merrill, 1943 $300/500

Lot # 39 (Sale Order: 39 of 498)      

13" x 11". Illustrated on the front cover are two women pilots in uniform against an airplane, along with two 8 1/2" paper dolls of them as WAFS pilots from the Ferrying Division of the Air Transport Division. Four more 8 1/2" paper doll WAFS are featured on the back cover, and inside are seven pages of costumes and uniforms. The WAFS (Women's Auxiliary Ferrying Service) and WASPS (Women's Air Force Service Pilots) were formed during WWII to assist in non-combat aerial duties; 25000 women volunteered but less than 1100 served. Although more than 70 died in this service, at the conclusion of the war, the group was disbanded, the female pilots sent home, records sealed and no official recognition was ever given to the group until 1977 when the women were finally acknowledged as "veterans". #4852, Merrill, 1943.
