Pre-War Colt Super Match .38 Automatic Adjustable Sight 1911 Semi-Auto Pistol, Letter, 1939 C&R

Lot # 126 (Sale Order: 126 of 354)

Make: Colt

Model: Super Match .38 Automatic

Serial Number: 34430

Year of Manufacture: 1939

Caliber: .38 Super

Action Type: Single Action Semi-Auto with Removable Magazine

Markings: The left side of the slide is marked "COLT’S PT. F.A. MFG. CO. HARTFORD, CT. U.S.A. / PAT’D APR.20,1897. SEPT.9,1902. DEC.19,1905. FEB.14,1911. AUG.19.1913". The right side of the slide is marked "SUPER MATCH", "COLT", "SUPER .38 / AUTOMATIC" and with a Rampant Colt logo. The left front of the trigger guard is marked "5" and "VP in a triangle. The right front of the trigger guard is marked "77". The right side of the frame above the trigger is marked "34430", the rear face of the slide is marked "344 / 30" under the firing pin stop. The left of the chamber is marked "COLT SUPER 38 AUTO MATCH", the left lug is marked "MB" in circle.

Barrel Length: 5"

Sights / Optics: The front sight is a serrated, ramped blade that is fixed to the front of the slide. The rear sight is a Stevens square notch sight, adjustable for windage and elevation mounted to the rear of the slide.

Stock Configuration & Condition: The grips are checkered "Coltwood" brown plastic with reinforcement rings around the screws and reinforcement ribs on the interior. The grips have only light handling marks. The checkering is well defined. There are no chips or cracks. Overall, the grips are in Fine-Excellent condition. These grips would not be correct for 1939, but given the pistol's delayed shipping, they would be correct for 1946.

Type of Finish: Blue

Finish Originality: Original

Bore Condition: The bore is mostly bright with sharp rifling. There is infrequent minor erosion in the bore, mostly at the muzzle-end. In this writer's opinion, the bore rates 8 or 9 out of 10.

Overall Condition: This pistol retains about 85% of its metal finish. The finish is thinning at all edges. There is handling wear in the grip areas. There is some other scattered more minor wear. There are some scattered light nicks, scuffs and scratches. There is infrequent faint surface oxidation with a few spots of minor erosion. The action shows operational wear. The screw heads are tool marked with strong slots. The markings are clear. Overall, this pistol is in Very Good condition.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. The slide and frame are cut for a Swartz firing pin safety, but the mechanism is not present. We have not fired this pistol. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.

Box, Paperwork & Accessories: This pistol comes with one blued nine round magazine, a reproduction box and a Colt Archives letter. The letter indicates that the pistol shipped November 15, 1946 to Frank T. Budge Company in Miami Florida as one of 50 guns of the same type in the shipment.

Our Assessment: The .38 Super cartridge was first introduced by Colt in 1928 as a higher pressure loading of the .38 ACP. It is capable of driving a 115 gr. bullet to nearly 1400 fps., producing almost 500 ft-lbs. of energy. Today, the cartridge is favored by many top pistol match competitors. Colt first introduced the round in its 1911A1 frame, making it basically the same as the Government Model except for the caliber. The 1911 pistol had already gained a reputation as a reliable pistol during WWI, Colt saw no reason not to capitalize on that with a new caliber offering.

Colt followed this with a Super Match model that had a hand honed action and match grade barrel. It is estimated that fewer than 4,000 Super Match .38s were produced in total, only three quarters of these having adjustable sights. This adjustable sight Super Match model was made in 1939, but it is interesting that it hung around the factory for the entirety of WWII. The serial number, as well as the Swartz safety cuts on the slide and frame (the mechanism is not present), distinctly place it in pre-war production, but the grips and late 1946 shipping date are distinctly post-war. It is often said that "Colt never threw anything away" and Colt collectors know to "never say never". Given that this particularly scarce gun was one of 50 (fifty!) in the same shipment to one dealer in Miami, it is entirely likely that this pistol was one of the last available in the factory when the order was placed. The pistol is in Very Good condition with 85% of its original finish, a strong bore and good mechanics. This intriguing and rare pistol is sure to attract the attention of the collectors out there. Please see our photos and good luck!

There is some light surface erosion, mostly toward the top-front of the slide. There is some light surface oxidation. There are scattered light nicks, scuffs and scratches. Our Assessment: Colt's National Match pistols were first advertised as a factory option in 1932, with a prototype having been sent to the Camp Perry matches in 1930. The National Match pistol was essentially a factory target pistol built on the Government Model frame, but with a hand-honed action, match barrel, and Patridge sight. Production would be continued until 1942 and resumed in 1957; at that time it was re-branded as the Gold Cup National Match.

This factory lettered pre-War Colt National Match Government Model was shipped in early 1937 and is in Very Good condition. The pistol shows wear consistent with its intended use and has been equipped with a later production .08"" front sight. The letter indicates the shipping destination; it was sent to Shapleigh Hardware in St. Louis with four other pistols of the same type in the shipment. It features a 5” barrel marked “MB” in a circle on the left lug, about 80% of its original finish, a decent bore and strong mechanics. Any pre-War National Match pistols are highly prized by collectors. This example will take a prized place in a Colt automatics collection.

Our Assessment: The Colt 1911 .45 ACP semi-automatic pistol was designed by the legendary firearms inventor John Moses Browning, and developed for the US Army. The Model 1911 was the end-result of a series of developments by Browning, starting with his Model 1900. The advances made by Browning were revolutionary at the time, and were so successful that they are considered commonplace today. Browning not only developed first a pivoting and then a tilting barrel to allow for a locked system, but he also developed the concept of "the slide", a feature now synonymous with semi-automatic handguns.

This is a custom pistol built on a 1918 vintage Colt Model of 1911 frame assembled into a National Match-style configuration with a 1950s vintage commercial Government Model slide. The pistol retains a strong bore and great mechanics, so it should still prove to be a good shooter. The included accessories will also make for a nice display in a collection. Please see our photos and good luck!

Our Assessment: In the mid-1900s the 1911 was used for all manner of pistol competitions, but the base Government model typically needed some tweaking and modification to get the best performance. In 1957, Colt introduced their Gold Cup National Match, an out-of-the-box, purpose-built target pistol with adjustable target sights, hand-fit parts, serrated grip frame and adjustable trigger. This example is from 1968, a fairly early Gold Cup made about 2 years before the pistols would actually be marked "GOLD CUP". It shows wear consistent with infrequent use over the last 57 years, retaining a great bore and strong mechanics.

The pistol comes with a handsome display case fit for the pistol and a .22 Conversion Unit that shares the same aesthetic as the pistol. The set will make a wonderful display in any collection and should prove to be great fun on the range. Please see our photos and good luck!

Box, Paperwork, and Accessories: None.

Our Assessment: This Winchester Model 74, launched in 1939, represents an innovative chapter in the evolution of self-loading rimfire rifles. Constructed with an 8.5-inch-long steel tube receiver, just an inch in diameter, this rifle integrates a blowback-operated bolt and a tubular magazine nestled within the buttstock, demonstrating a unique engineering approach for the era. One of its notable features is the ability to remove the bolt from the rear of the receiver, a design choice that significantly simplifies maintenance and cleaning from the rear, unlike most vintage semi-automatic rimfire rifles. Visually, the Model 74 is immediately recognizable due to the squared-off rear of its action, bearing a resemblance to the "humpback" profile of the classic Browning Auto-5 shotgun. This distinct silhouette not only adds to its aesthetic appeal but also to its historical value. Additionally, the safety mechanism of the Model 74 is distinct—a flat, knurl-ended crossbolt meticulously dovetailed into the top of the receiver, enhancing both safety and ease of use. The rifle’s ergonomic design extends to its petite charging handle, which is strategically positioned in a slot on the right rear of the action, directly above the trigger. This placement optimizes ease of operation for right-handed shooters, allowing them to quickly chamber a round with a simple wrist rotation and a hook of the forefinger. Originally released in .22 Short, the Model 74 expanded its offerings in 1940 with the addition of a .22 Long Rifle version, though the .22 Short was discontinued in 1952. Production of the Winchester Model 74 ceased in 1955, concluding a 17-year production run during which approximately 406,574 units were manufactured. This historical significance, coupled with its innovative design features, makes the Winchester Model 74 a coveted item for collectors and enthusiasts of vintage firearms, offering both a glimpse into the past and a testament to the ingenuity of its time.

Our Assessment: The Winchester Model 1890 is one of the most recognizable and successful pump-action rifles ever produced. Originally designed by John Browning, it became a staple in shooting galleries, small-game hunting, and target shooting for decades. This second-model iteration, chambered in .22 WRF, was a premium option over the more common .22 Short, Long, or Long Rifle chamberings.

Manufactured in 1915, this rifle is a Curio & Relic eligible piece that retains its historical significance. While it shows wear consistent with its age and the barrel has been cut back 1/2”, the mechanics remain sound, and the bore is in excellent condition. This example would make a great restoration project, shooter, or collectible addition to a Winchester collection.

For fans of classic American firearms, this Winchester Model 1890 embodies quality craftsmanship, historical relevance, and a design that has withstood the test of time. Whether for display or use, it remains a fine representation of Winchester’s legacy in firearm manufacturing.

Our Assessment: The Winchester Model 1890 is an iconic early slide-action rifle that was highly favored for small game hunting and target shooting. Designed by John Moses Browning, it quickly became one of the most successful .22-caliber pump-action rifles of its time.

This particular example, manufactured in 1907, has been rechambered for .22 Magnum. While originally chambered in .22 WRF, conversions like this are sometimes performed to allow use of modern, higher-velocity .22 Magnum ammunition. Given the higher pressures of .22 WMR compared to .22 WRF, it is recommended that the buyer ensures safe operation before use.

Whether you are a Winchester collector, a fan of John Browning’s designs, or simply appreciate classic American craftsmanship, this Model 1890 is a great find. With its C&R status, it maintains its historical value while still being a practical piece of shooting history.

Our Assessment: The Winchester Model 1890 pump action rifle was designed by John Browning in the late 1880's, patented in 1888 and renamed the Model 90 in about 1919. Winchester had asked Browning to design the rifle as a replacement for the rimfire versions of the Model 1873, which had never achieved great popularity. It proved to be the most successful repeating Rimfire rifle for general all around shooting ever made by Winchester. For many years, the Model 1890, when chambered in .22 Short, was considered to be the standard for use in shooting galleries, hence its nickname of "Gallery Gun".

This early solid frame Winchester Model 1890 is chambered in 22 short and shows a near perfect restoration by Roger's Restorations. Truly an artist, Roger is known for restorations which do not make a rifle look as if it is brand-new, but rather to make the rifle appear as an extraordinarily high-condition original. He has been so successful at this that he began placing an unobtrusive marking on concealed surfaces of the guns he restores, to prevent unscrupulous characters from passing off his work as a genuine original Winchester, which it easily could! His abilities are on fine display on this 1890. The rifle is from an interesting period of production when the 1st Model solid frames were being made simultaneously with the new 2nd Model takedown. It will make a beautiful addition to any Winchester collection and should still prove to be a fun and classy plinker. Please see our photos and good luck!

Our Assessment: Winchester was the first American company to offer a practical .22 pump-action rifle. Designed by John Moses Browning, the Model 1890 was patterned after Winchester's iconic lever-actions with a tubular magazine under the barrel, an exposed hammer, and top ejection. Winchester had asked Browning to design the rifle as a replacement for the rimfire versions of the Model 1873, which had never achieved great popularity. Sixteen years later, Winchester introduced the Model 1906, a more economical version of the Model 1890, with a 20” round barrel.

This Winchester Model 06 has seen a rather radical customization, converted to a lever-action. While Winchester did experiment with lever-action versions of the 1890 action, this example was done outside the factory, though it appears to have been performed by someone quite talented. The rifle has further been embellished with scroll engraving surrounding fox and bobcat scenes. This is almost certainly a unique rifle and will make an eye-catching addition to any collection. Please see our photos and good luck!

This slide action repeater would look great in any collection of pump rimfire rifles, but it really belongs in a collection next to its Model 1890 and 1906 predecessors. Our Assessment: Winchester was the first American company to offer a practical .22 pump-action rifle, the Model 1890. Designed by John Browning, the Model 1890 was patterned after Winchester's iconic lever-actions with a tubular magazine under the barrel, an exposed hammer, and top ejection. It was an instant success and set the standard for all .22 repeaters that followed. In 1909, Remington introduced a pump-action .22 that used an internal hammer, allowing the receiver to be streamlined and well sealed against moisture and debris. In 1915, Marlin introduced a similar hammerless .22 rifle. The innovative designs made Winchester's pump guns look a bit "old fashioned", and in an attempt to attract new customers during the depths of the Great Depression, Winchester decided to introduce their own "modern" hammerless .22 pump-action. The resulting Model 61 hammerless rifle was released in 1932, and produced until 1963.

This Winchester Model 61 Pump Action Rifle was made in 1958 and is in Excellent Condition. Most notably, it’s a scarce Winchester Counter-Bore Smoothbore Model 61 chambered for .22 Long Rifle Shot Only. In 1938, trap shooter Fred Routledge developed a counter-bore barrel using a standard 24" Winchester Model 61. The "Routledge Bore" had 10 1/2" of smooth bore starting at the chamber with a diameter of .217", that opened up to 13 1/2" of counter-bore with a bore diameter measuring .375”. By 1940, Winchester developed its own counter-bore barrel design to avoid paying royalties to Mr. Routledge. The new Winchester Counter-Bore barrel had 16" of smooth bore measuring .217" and only 8" of counter-bore with a diameter of .265”. One of the distinguishing features of those counterbored Model 61s was a matted top frame, but in 1954, the design was changed to a grooved receiver and the matting was dropped. These were essentially small caliber shotguns, with a counter bored portion of the barrel to spread the shot, and they could be used for “Mo-Skeet-O” backyard miniature trap shooting, or for pesky birds. This rifle features a 24” barrel, 98% of its lustrous, original blued finish, elegant two-piece walnut stocks with a 17-grooved slide handle, a single bead at the muzzle, a scope grooved receiver, strong mechanics, and a bright Winchester Counter-Bore smooth bore with no erosion. This configuration was offered from 1954-1959, and is the last receiver variation of the Model 61 Smoothbore, found within the serial range of 215,000 to 280,000. This scarce Winchester Model 61 Smoothbore could be the jewel of any Winchester slide-action collection and will display well with its reproduction box and paperwork.
