VIETNAM WAR USN CORPSMAN KIA NAMED PURPLE HEART

Lot # 125404 (Sale Order: 401 of 889)

VIETNAM WAR USN CORPSMAN KIA NAMED PURPLE HEART
Vietnam War 3rd Battalion, 4th Marines US Navy Hospital Corpsman KIA Purple Heart. Named to Hospitalman John Nathan Morris 6834551. (1) Purple Heart named to Morris with USN coffin case, unnumbered. (1) Collection of online research papers named to Morris. Includes details about his death and the opening battles of Operation Hastings. John Nathan Morris was born August 17, 1943 in Meldrim, Georgia. During the Vietnam War he served as a Hospital Corpsman with the Headquarters and Service Company, 3rd Battalion, 4th Marines, 3rd Marine Division. On July 15, 1966 during the opening stages of Operation Hastings the 3/4 Marines flew into the Song Ngan River Valley aboard CH-46 Helicopters to locate and destroy uniformed units of the PAVN who were infiltrating south of the DMZ. Members of the H & S Company were some of the first to land at LZ Crow but as more of the CH-46s came to land they realized the LZ was too small for the amount of helicopters coming in. One helicopter hit some trees on the edge of the LZ, two more were able to land safely but their rotor blades collided, and another was shot down by enemy AA fire. Morris was originally believed to be aboard the CH-46 that was shot down but later it was found that he was killed from debris from one of the crashes or from a helicopter accidentally landing on him. He is buried at Oak Hill Cemetery, Meldrim, Georgia and is memorialized on the Vietnam Veteran's Memorial, Panel 09e, Line 25 in Washington DC.

1st CLEVELAND TROOP HORSEMANSHIP BADGE IN 14K GOLD
Late 19th Century 1st Cleveland Troop Horsemanship Badge and Troop A History Book. Named to Webb C. Hayes, a US Army Officer, Medal of Honor recipient, son of President Rutherford B. Hayes, and member of the 1st Cleveland Troop Ohio National Guard. (1) 1st Cleveland Troop Horsemanship Badge. 14K Gold with Sterling Silver crossed rifle and sword. W.C. Hayes is named on the first bar, hand engraved "Camp Garretson 18 Lakewood, NY 85" on the reverse. (1) "History of Troop A" Book. Edition 264 of 500. Printed in 1923. Hayes is mentioned on pages 27 & 28. Also included are photocopies of the pages, MOH citation and biographical information. James Webb Cook Hayes was born on March 20, 1856, in Cincinnati, Ohio. In the early 1870s, he attended Cornell University but left to serve as his father’s secretary during his tenure as Governor of Ohio and later as President of the United States. During the 1880s, Hayes joined the 1st Cleveland Troop, also known as the 1st City Troop or the Black Horse Troop, where he served as an NCO and earned the Horsemanship badge. With the outbreak of the Spanish-American War, he was commissioned as a Major in the 1st Ohio Cavalry and took part in the first expedition against Havana. He later participated in the campaigns in Santiago de Cuba and Puerto Rico. While crossing the San Juan River, Hayes was wounded, but was still able to participate in the assault on San Juan Hill on July 1, 1898. The following year, he was commissioned as a Lieutenant Colonel in the 31st U.S. Infantry during the Philippine Insurrection. Just hours after he landed in Manila in November of 1899, he led a daring rescue mission to free U.S. soldiers on Vigan Island. For this he was awarded the Medal of Honor. Hayes continued his distinguished military career, and served in the Boxer Rebellion, the China Relief Expedition, the Russo-Japanese War, and finally World War I. He initially served as a Special Agent for the U.S. State Department, and was later commissioned as a Colonel and deployed to the Italian front as a regional commander of the American Expeditionary Forces. Beyond his military service, Hayes was a businessman, philanthropist and adventurer. He played a pivotal role in the establishment of the first Presidential Library, the Rutherford B. Hayes Presidential Center, in 1916. He passed away on July 26, 1934, in Marion, Ohio.
