WWII UK RAF ACE & POW DOUGLAS BADER RED CROSS BOX
Lot # 125478 (Sale Order: 475 of 889)
WWII British RAF Ace and POW Douglas Bader's Red Cross Parcel. Sent to Bader during his time as a POW at Oflag IV-C (Officer's Camp), or more commonly known as Colditz Castle, in Saxony, Germany. The parcel is cardboard construction with multiple red cross labels in English and German. It is addressed to Bader and dated 1943. Included with this parcel is a chemical analysis letter from the Stafford University Science Department dated March 18, 2000, stating the box "Hasn't been made up in the last 50 years". Also included is a photograph of Bader's wife, Lady Joan Bader, holding this parcel box. Douglas Bader was a decorated RAF fighter ace during World War II. In 1931, while performing acrobatics in his plane, Bader crashed and lost both his lower legs. Subsequently, he was grounded by the RAF and medically retired. He fought for years to return to flight status and at the outbreak of WWII, he returned to flying with two prosthetic legs. He quickly became a rising star, and went on to command No. 242 Squadron in the Battle of Britain. Later, he led the Tangmere Wing, engaged in large-scale aerial battles against the German Luftwaffe. By 1941, he had achieved at least 22 confirmed kills. In August 1941, Bader’s Spitfire was shot down over France. He parachuted to safety but was captured by German forces. During his bailout, one of his artificial legs detached. The Germans recognized him, and arranged for the British to drop a replacement in what became known as "Operation Leg." As a POW, Bader repeatedly tried to escape, and often used his influence to boost prisoner morale. His persistent attempts led to his transfer to Colditz Castle, a high-security prison for habitual escapees. He remained there until April 1945, when Allied forces liberated the camp.
Size: 6 1/2" x 10" x 4"
