David Halbach Assay Office Watercolor Painting

Lot # 702 (Sale Order: 702 of 1057)

Title is Assay Office. 13 1/4" by 16 5/8" framed. 5 7/8" by 9 3/4" unframed. Watercolor on paper. David Allen Halbach (Born 1931) is active/lives in Arizona, California. ...moreDavid Halbach is known for Cowboy-historical genre and wildlife watercolors, animation. David Halbach wanted to be an artist for as long as he could remember. At first, it was for recognition from his parents, and then later in junior high school he discovered that he had a real talent. He completed his first paintings when he was in sixth grade, and after that he just kept on painting. Since Halbach's grades were not good enough to become the doctor or lawyer his mother had hoped he would become, he attended the Chouinard Art Institute in Los Angeles, California. After finishing art school and a tour in the Navy, Halbach went to work as an animator for Disney studios working on Lady and the Tramp. Leaving Disney, he then entered into commercial art and advertising, and eventually became an art teacher, a position that allowed him to create fine art and refresh his knowledge of the basics. Leaving California, Halbach and his wife, Jean, moved to Arizona, where he began to work as a professional artist. He began to sell his paintings through galleries and is now known as a successful watercolorist. A painter in American Western genre, Halbach researches subjects for his works extensively. He says, "There is a lot of truth in 'Paint what you know.'" Living in Arizona was conducive to creating the Western scenes that he had loved since he was a child, and he began to carefully investigate the history of the West and all that was needed to make his work honest and correct. That investigation brought back memories of the many times he had played cowboys and Indians when he was young, memories which inspired him in his endeavors. According to Halbach, "A child's imagination is an important asset to an artist. It mustn't be lost." Halbach has a special affection for the Hopi Indians, their pueblos and their culture, and that affection plays an important part in his art. He encourages the viewer to use their imagination, always allowing for a little mystery in each image.

Harold Harrington Betts Indian Warrior Painting

Lot # 707 (Sale Order: 707 of 1057)

Title is Navajo Warrior. 27" by 39" unframed. 31" by 43" framed. Oil on Canvas. Harold Harrington Betts (1881 - 1963) was active/lived in Illinois, Michigan. Harold Betts...more is known for Landscape, figure, genre and Indians painting. Little is currently known about a group of Florida paintings completed by Harold Harrington Betts after 1896, including a large and colorful harbor scene with sailing ships in the Miami area in the Sam and Robbie Vickers Collection, Jacksonville, Florida, and an elegant topographical view of the architecturally significant Villa Flora, St. Augustine, Florida, built in 1896 for $ 15,000.00 in the Moorish Revival style commissioned by a retired Baptist minister named O. A. Weerrolsen. After serving as his winter home for a number of years, the Villa became a popular area hotel in 1906 and later in 1934 it was a restaurant known as the Villa Flora Grill. In 1941 the large and elegant building passed into the stewardship of the Sisters of St. Joseph who continue to use it for administrative purposes, housing and for a chapel for novices to the order. The Villa continues to be a prime example of an exuberant Spanish-Moorish Revival city villa in St. Augustine. The painting of the Villa by Betts approaches the massive stone structure from an interesting and unusual angle that suggests its ancient lineage and its tropical location. The Villa is recorded in the Florida State Archives and the Archives of the Detroit Publishing Company who produced copious photographs of the villa as early as 1902. These two works and other paintings by Betts with a Florida location suggest that Betts likely traveled along the east coast of the State before World War I. Available historical records in Arizona show Betts in the American West after 1908-1909. There Betts painted views of the Grand Canyon, Yosemite, and Taos, New Mexico where he became interested in painting the cultures of the Pueblo communities in the area including the Hopi and Zuni people. Born in New York City in 1881 into a family of accomplished artists, Harold Betts exhibited widely including over fifteen exhibitions at the Art Institute of Chicago and several at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. Many of Betts’ paintings with titles that suggest and/or contain exact locations are included in the Inventory of the Smithsonian Institution and are available to scholars. Most of Betts’ Pueblo masterworks are included in the Santa Fe Railway Collection. Betts continued to paint in the American West, Chicago and in Florida until sometime in the 1930s when information about the artist disappears from newspapers and the historical record. His exact death date is currently unknown. Submitted by Gary R. Libby, Director Emeritus, The Museum of Arts and Sciences, Daytona Beach and author of books and catalogs on Florida Art.

Maynard Dixon Bucking Bronc Pen and Ink Drawing

Title is Bucking Bronc Sketch. 15 3/4" by 17 3/4" framed. 6 1/2" by 8 5/8" inside the front of the matte. Pen and Ink on Paper. Provenance: Estate of Janice and Jack Deco...moreursey (Mary Livingston's Gallery 2) Orange County California, purchased directly from the artist. Maynard Dixon (1875 - 1946) was active/lived in California, Arizona. Maynard Dixon is known for Western landscape painting-skyscapes, Indians. Born in Fresno, CA on Jan. 24, 1875. A sickly child, sketching occupied a lot of Dixon's time while growing up. As a boy he listened with fascination to the stories of the Old West told by the old timers. It is no wonder that cowboys and Indians were to become the main subject matter of his life's work. At 16 he sent his sketch book to Frederic Remington who encouraged him to pursue an art career. The Dixon family moved to Alameda, CA in 1893, the year the artist's first illustration was published in Overland Monthly. Dixon enrolled at the Mark Hopkins Art Institute, but the confines of a classroom were not to his liking and he remained only three months. In 1895 he took his first full-time job as an illustrator for the San Francisco Morning Call and continued four years later with the Examiner. By 1899 he was making regular sketching trips into the Northwest and Southwest, during which time he was exhibiting regularly with the San Francisco Art Ass'n. In 1905 he married artist Lillian West Tobey. A year later the earthquake and fire destroyed his studio and most of his early works. The Dixons then lived across the Golden Gate in Sausalito until 1907 when he accepted a commission from the Southern Pacific Railroad to paint a mural for their depot in Tucson, AZ. Afterwards he moved to New York where he continued his magazine illustrations. Upon returning to California in 1912, he abandoned commercial art to concentrate on easel paintings and murals. During the PPIE of 1915 he suffered a nervous breakdown and divorced his wife in 1917. He married photographer Dorothea Lange in 1920. This marriage lasted until 1935 and in 1937 he married artist Edith Hamlin. During the 1930s he did murals and paintings for the WPA. In 1938 ill health forced his move to the drier climate of Tucson, AZ where he spent his last years while maintaining a studio nearby in Mt Carmel, UT. Dixon died in Tucson on Nov. 14, 1946. Today he is internationally famous for his western subjects which he often signed with his logo, an Indian Thunderbird.

Attributed to Andrew Wyeth Gouache Painting

Lot # 712 (Sale Order: 712 of 1057)

Title is Snowy Cherry Blossom Bouquet 1934. Gouache on Paper. 18 3/4" by 22 3/4" framed. 8 3/8" by 11 1/2" unframed. Notes: In our opinion this appears to be the work of ...moreAndrew Wyeth, however, as no catalogue raisonne entry is present, we are listing it as attributed to the artist. As of the catalog publish date, we have reached out to the Brandywine center and are awaiting a response. Provenance: The Estate of Larry Wade, Kansas. Old Auction tag on verso Stating Lot 121. Andrew Newell Wyeth (1917 - 2009) was active/lived in Pennsylvania, Maine. Andrew Wyeth is known for Figure, portrait, landscape and genre painting. A painter of landscape and figure subjects in Pennsylvania and Maine, Andrew Wyeth became one of the best-known American painters of the 20th century. His style is both realistic and abstract, and he works primarily in tempera and watercolor, often using the drybrush technique. He is the son of Newell Convers and Carolyn Bockius Wyeth of Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania, and was home-schooled because of delicate health. His art instruction came from his famous-illustrator father, who preached the tying of painting to life--to mood and to essences and to capturing the subtleties of changing light and shadows. The Wyeth household was a lively place with much intellectual and social stimulation. Because of the prominence of N.C. Wyeth, persons including many dignitaries came from all over the country to visit the family. Andrew's sisters Carolyn and Henriette became noted artists as did his brother-in-law, Peter Hurd. The non-art oriented brother, Nathaniel Wyeth, achieved much success as a chemist for DuPont where, among many inventions, he created a durable plastic so plastic bottles could hold carbonated beverages. Andrew Wyeth maintained a style strongly oriented towards Realism when Abstract Expressionism was all-prevalent. Adhering to his own path, he was snubbed by many prominent art critics. However, his paintings have elements of abstraction in that the work derives from his strong feelings about his subjects, which often appear in unusual positions, juxtapositions, and with features highlighted for emotional effect. His work usually suggests rural quiet, isolation, and somber mood and is devoid of modern-day objects such as automobiles. In 1937, Wyeth's first one-man show of watercolors depicting scenes around Port Clyde, Maine, sold out at the Macbeth Gallery in New York. In Maine, Andrew first spent his summers in Port Clyde with his family, but after his marriage to Betsy James in 1940, he and his wife went regularly to Cushing. Christina Olson of Cushing, at the end of Hathorn Point, was his most famous model, but over the years, Wyeth formed close friendships with - and painted - several other Maine neighbors. His closest friend, Walt Anderson, gradually ages before the eyes of viewers in numerous Wyeth drawings and paintings that show life's changes from the youthful Young Swede (1939) to the older man in Adrift (1982). The Olson House, where Christina and her brother lived, is now owned and maintained by the Farnsworth Museum, where Wyeth had his first major exhibition in 1951 and where the Andrew Wyeth Gallery is now a permanent exhibition place for his paintings. In 1964, the directors of the Farnsworth Museum paid $65,000 for Wyeth's painting Her Room, the highest price ever paid by a museum for the work of a living artist. The Olson House is the first property ever named to the National Register of Historic Places for being recognized as the site of a painting, Christina's World, one of the most recognized paintings in American art. After the death of Christina Olson, Wyeth used female models Siri Erickson of Cushing, and Helga Testorf of Chadds Ford. Depictions of the nude Helga, a total of 240 works, provided grist for an avalanche of sensational publicity. The Helga paintings were exhibited in 1987 at the National Gallery of Art, the gallery's first exhibition of works by a living artist. Wyeth has received many official honors. In 1963, he was the subject of a cover story for Time magazine and, thanks to President John F. Kennedy, he became the first visual artist to be nominated for the Presidential Medal of Freedom. In 1990, Wyeth received the Congressional Gold Medal, the first artist to have that honor. Andrew and his wife Betsy have two sons, Nicholas and Jamie Browning, the latter who has become a prominent American artist, and the former who shares with his father and his uncle, Nathaniel, a great fascination with machines, especially aviation.

John Nieto Sitting Bull Acrylic Painting on Canvas

Lot # 714 (Sale Order: 714 of 1057)

Title is Sitting Bull (Tatanka Yotanka). 18" by 24". Acrylic on Canvas. Provenance: The Estate of Craig Keeland, Gifted to Craig Keeland from the Artist. John W. Nieto (1...more936 - 2018) was active/lived in Texas, New Mexico. John Nieto is known for Native American theme painting, etching, graphics, sculpture. John Nieto calls himself an American artist who paints Indians, not an Indian artist. An acclaimed leader of his field, but taking a separate path to represent Native Americans in striking symbolic portraits, Nieto is exhibited worldwide and has had paintings accepted for the Presidential library. He does not attempt to be authentic, but to show a core Native spirit. His Indians seem to belong to a universal tribe that suggest a common, Far Eastern origin, and connection with a contemporary group. Early this century, Indian artists were cultivated in a white man's school and encouraged to portray ancestral and reservation experiences. Art from that period was inauthentic and oblivious to world trends. Since mid-century, Indian-born artists began to tell a bitter truth of Indian pain from alcoholism and other social problems. John Nieto belongs to neither camp. His Indians are not idealized or troubled. They are potters, warriors, silversmiths or shamans in traditional garb, as well as indigenous wildlife, painted in brilliant, oddly paired colors and radiating a quiet dignity. "There is no formula for my faces. I paint the dance of identity around the pan-Indian bone structure of all Native Americans. I am painting a person, but I am painting much more than that," says Nieto. He says that his art "is the result of an emotional involvement with my subject matter rather than a cerebral one." He uses broad strokes and thick layers of brilliant colors with a halo of contrasting color traced around each figure. His electric hues are unmistakable. Nieto's work reflects his upbringing from Hispanic and Indian-born parents. His distinct style comes not only from his native New Mexico, where he still lives, but also from a global awareness and travels to Europe. His unfettered use of brilliant colors has been likened to the Fauves of the 1920s' French movement. Nieto has spent time in Paris and also seems to be influenced by European expressionists who released the subconscious onto canvases. He also uses painting techniques and a spiritual awareness from the Far East. His approach is ritualistic. "I'm in a trance when I paint. It's like being a drummer -- you don't look at the drums, you just know intuitively where they are." An artist of established international reputation, Nieto's work has been exhibited in Europe, Japan, Latin America, and Africa, in addition to his annual shows in Santa Fe, New York and Palm Springs. In 1981 his work was exhibited at the Salon DAutomne/Grand Palais in Paris, France. His work, the subject of two books and numerous articles, is also represented in the permanent collection of the National Museum of Wildlife Art. In 1994, Nieto received New Mexico's Governor's Award for achievement in the Arts. He has served on the Advisory Board of The Wheelwright Museum in Santa Fe, the Advisory Board of the Native American Preparatory School, and is a Regent at his alma mater, Southern Methodist University in Dallas, where he received his Bachelor of Arts Degree. John Nieto lives and works in Corrales, New Mexico, on the banks of the Rio Grande River. His roots run deep in the state of his birth, with ancestors going back more than 300 years.

Winold Reiss Glacier National Park Painting

Lot # 715 (Sale Order: 715 of 1057)

Title is Rising Wolf Mountain Glacier National Park Montana. Mixed Media on Board. 21" by 32 3/4" unframed. 22 1/2" by 34 1/2" framed. Provenance: Private collection, Wor...morecester, Massachusetts, Collection of New York City Restaurateur Otto J. Baumgarten, acquired from Artist Otto J. Baumgarten relationship can be found here: https://winoldreiss.org/works/architectural.htm Winold (Fritz Winold) Reiss (1886 - 1953) was active/lived in New York, Montana, Nevada / Germany. Winold Reiss is known for Indian portrait and mural painting, illustration. Born in Germany, Winold Reiss grew up in the Black Forest and came to be a foremost American painter of Indian portraits. He is also considered a modernist, a part of the Art Deco vanguard. In Munich, he studied at the Royal Academy and the Art School, and having been impressed by novels of James Fenimore Cooper, came to the United States in 1913 with the purpose of painting Indians like those he had read about. He arrived in New York City with little money and realized he was still a distance from Indian country, so he first got established as a portrait, landscape, and mural painter, art teacher, and interior designer. In the latter capacity, he successfully decorated several restaurants and other public buildings and had a commission for the Hotel Crillon. All of this activity allowed him to save money for travel. In 1919, he went West, visiting the Blackfeet Indians who made him an honorary member of the tribe, naming him "Beaver Child." He returned to their reservation in Browning, Montana most summers between 1920 and 1940 while continuing to live in New York. Eighty one of his portraits were published by the Great Northern Railway. Also during the 1920s and 1930s, he painted many scenes of Harlem, during the creative period known as the Harlem Renaissance. In 1939, he completed, what was then, the world's largest mural for the New York World's Fair. Also he ran art schools in New York City, Woodstock and Glacier National Park. In fact, he spent many summers teaching at Glacier National Park and at that time, was probably the state's leading art teacher. He painted other western scenes including the Grand Canyon. and he gave lectures on color and mural painting. His technique was to work quickly on a large sheet of Whatman Board with pastel and tempera, media that dried quickly so he could quickly finish his portraits. Often the elderly Indians would fall asleep, so he would fill on the decoration on their clothing later. He often used motifs from the Indian crafts in the background of his paintings. His art was also used in advertising as evidenced by a Great Northern Railway travel advertising poster of 1941, depicting his painting entitled Sundance-Piegan Chief-Glacier National Park.
