A Pair Of Songye Nkisi Power Figure Fly Whisks, Republic Of Congo
{shipping arranged by auction house or free local pick up} This Pair Was Acquired In The Late 1980s. Sometimes know as a pair of wedding brooms for "The Jumping The Broom" ceremony. Mostly these object are called "Fly Whisk" In central Africa, Flywhisks denoted status, rank, and function, rather than used to whisk away flies. Commonly associated with chiefs and titleholders, they were also owned by diviners and healers. their purpose may also have been used to purify spaces, bless people, places, or things, and settle disputes. Flywhisks rarely depict women; yet this finely carved pair Of Man and Woman kneeling signifies obedience and respect. Possibly for a union of souls in the Songye culture.
