British Naval Officers Sword

Lot # 508 (Sale Order: 512 of 637)      

British Naval Officers Sword, ca.1775-1820, with a small sword type guard and hilt (ca. 1775), but fitted with a later wide blade (ca. 1796-1820). The 32" blade shows eng...moreraved decorations that are worn and muted, and a wide single fuller running the full length. Blade has been nickel plated at some time in the past. There are no visible makers marks. Hilt is gilded bronze with a flat and thin guard, having a beaded rim on top with engraved details of British flags, anchors, military motifs, and what looks like a family crest. There are quillions on both sides of the guard. The finger "D" guard is decorated in the center with a beaded diamond design. The urn-shaped pommel has small crowns engraved on both sides as does the lower part of the hilt under the grip which has tightly wound twisted brass or copper wire of two sizes. OAL is 38.25". There is no scabbard present. Condition is good, the blade showing muted details, oxidation and minor flaking to the nickel-plated finish, but no edge nicks. Hilt retains a fair amount of its original gold fire gilt finish, with wear to the high edges and sides of the pommel, numerous small scratches and scrapes overall, and soiling to the top of the guard. Grip wire is nice and tight. Hilt and guard are loose on the blade, with a lot of play. Guard is bent in the middle, a little more than normal. Est.: $200-$300.

Lot of Three (3) European Court Swords: 1.) Spanish court sword, 30" plain double-edged blade, marked at the ricasso "TOLEDO" and dated 1867. Decorated brass clamshell gu...moreard with Spanish royal coat of arms surrounded by a wreath of laurel and oak leaves, dogs head quillion. No scabbard. Condition is fair, the metal with a dark rust patina overall but no edge nicks. Guard with remnants of the gold gilt finish in protected areas. 2.) Spanish court sword, 30" plain double-edged blade, marked at ricasso "TOLEDO" and dated 1871. Decorated brass clamshell guard with Spanish royal coat of arms surrounded by a wreath of laurel and oak leaves, dogs head quillion. On the underside of the front clam shell is an engraved presentation that reads "Recuerdo de Dn Basilio San Martin a suhermano Eduardo Asuero". Worthy of further research. No scabbard. Condition is fair, the blade with a dark rust patina overall but no edge nicks. Guard and hilt fittings have a dark uncleaned patina with remnants of the gold gilt finish in protected areas. 3.) European court sword, probably French, late 19th or early 20th century, 33" blade with a double edge from the middle to tip, light engraved floral motifs, no maker markings. Clamshell front guard with goddess wearing a helmet with a bird on top. Grip panels are missing and were probably mother of pearl. No scabbard. Condition is fair, the blade with a dark rust patina overall. Guard and hilt fittings have a dark uncleaned patina with remnants of the gold gilt finish remaining only in protected areas. Est.: $300-$500/lot.

Group of Three (3) European Smallswords

Lot # 510 (Sale Order: 514 of 637)      

Group of Three (3) European Smallswords: 1.) Smallsword, possibly British, ca. 1750, triangular 33" long blade with gilt etched decorations, faint makers mark "Tells & Co.", with replacement blade washer. Thin iron cupped guard with riveted decorations. No scabbard. Condition is good, the blade has a dark patina overall with no traces of the original bluing. Gold gilt is still present around the etched decorations. Pommel is loose and rotates, detaching itself from the finger guard. 2.) Smallsword, possibly Dutch or Italian, ca. 1650-1750, diamond-shaped 32.5" blade with small fuller near the ricasso area. Fancy pierced decorated cast iron two-lobe cupped guard. Cast crossguard with broken/missing quillion, intact finger loops, and fancy pierced finger guard. No scabbard. Condition is good, the metal with a dark rust patina, pitted surface mainly near the tip, and slight bend near the tip. Pommel and guards are tight to the blade, with just the slightest movement in the grip itself. 3.) Smallsword or Court sword, probably French or German, ca. 1770-1810, triangular 32.75" blade with etched decorations. Blade maker marked at the bottom "A. S. & C." Clamshell front guard with winged horses on either side of a central wreath. Black ebony wood checkered grip panels. Cast brass pommel with the face of a Roman goddess on front and back. No scabbard. Condition is good, the metal showing age graying, light rust, faint remnants of gold gilt on the etched decorations, with a slight bend near the tip. Central roundel on the clamshell shows heavy wear to the carved decoration. Grip panels are nice with no cracks, showing some age and soiling. Handle is tight to the blade but there is some play in the clamshell guard. Est.: $400-$600/lot....more

Nickel-plated steel scabbard with ornate brass fittings, scattered light pepper rust and light age toning to the fittings. 3.) Unidentified fraternal sword, 28" double-edged plain blade, age graying and light rust patina. Nickel-plated knights head pommel, fittings show light oxidation. Black painted steel scabbard with single frog stud and decorated brass drag, with scratches and scuffs to the paint. 4) Fraternal sword for the "Knights of Pythias" in relic condition. 32" etched decorated blade with age graying and light rust patina. Nickel-plated steel scabbard with fancy cast fittings, missing cap at throat, showing a dark rust patina and rust patches, the fittings have been painted black and the top one has some silver painted highlights added. U.S. Model 1860 Ames Light Cavalry Saber with Scabbard

U.S. Model 1860 Ames Light Cavalry Saber with Scabbard, dated 1864, 34-3/4" blade, marked on the ricasso "U.S. / G.W.C. / 1864" on one side, and lightly marked "AMES MFc ...moreCo" on the obverse. Blade shows age and wear, with some areas of staining and moderate surface erosion. Brass handguard displays a pleasing patina with indentations and wear. Wire wrapped leather grip is good with indentations and minor losses, secured with a brass pommel. Scabbard shows heavy use with a dark mottled patina, showing dents and creases, particularly toward the bottom end. Drag is marked "GGS". The Model 1860 Light Cavalry Saber saw use on both sides of the Civil War, through the Indian Wars, and well into the 20th Century. This is a representative example. Est.: $600-$800.

Prussian M1889 Cavalry Sword with Scabbard

Prussian M1889 Cavalry Sword with Scabbard, 30.5" straight blade, 36.25" OAL, steel pommel with ribbed composite grip, folding nickel guard, rolled quillion, and Prussian Eagle inset. Ricasso is maker marked "W.K & C" beneath King's & Knight's head trademark stamps. Blade is acid etched with cavalry motifs and inscribed with Gothic letters "Lus.Rgt.Graf Gotzen(2.Srhles.)Uo6" on the right side. Condition is very good, the blade retains most of its mirror bright finish and the motifs are crisp and clear showing a small rough area and mostly fine scratches behind the point, Guard has mostly toned darker. Pommel fits tightly and shows old grease that should clean. Grip is good with handling marks to the right side. Unmarked steel scabbard has a single fixed ring with the second ring missing. Scabbard is fair showing cleaned pitting, stains, and patina. Blade enters and withdraws smoothly. Est.: $250-$400....more

Named Hilborn-Hamburger, N.Y. USMC Officer's Dress Mameluke Sword and Scabbard, #323. The company started selling swords that were made in Germany in 1926, and this sword...more is named to E.A. Kohler. The 35" blade is marked "STAINLESS" and "TRADE (Eagle) MARK/HILBORN/HAMBURGER/IN/NEW YORK" on the left side and "PROOVED" with a star on the right. A stainless blade would indicate post WWII production. Top is marked "USMC SERIAL 323". Blade and scroll etching are excellent, grip is very good with some discoloration. Scabbard is marked "GERMANY" on the throat and is in very good condition with scattered frosting on the nickel. Est.: $200-$300.

Lot of Two (2) M.C. Lilley U.S. Model 1902 Army Officer Dress Swords and Scabbards. The M.C. Lilley Company made the M1902 officer sword from 1904 to 1925, when the company name changed. The M1902 officer swords were for all branches of the Army. 1.) The 30" etched blade is marked "THE/M.C. LILLEY & CO./COLUMBUS O." and the etching on the blade is weak due to heavy cleaning. Grip is all steel and the bottom steel part is painted black. Nickel scabbard is in good condition with small spots of rust showing through. 2.) The 32" etched blade is marked "THE/M.C. LILLEY & Co./COLOMBUS O.", and the etching is very good with a few spots of rust. Grip is a black composition material, and the branches of the guard are badly bent out of shape. Nickeled scabbard is in very good condition with light frosting throughout. Est.: $200-$300/lot....more
