Lot # 2011 (Sale Order: 11 of 303)

The leather brown pebbled buffer pad remains intact and in nice condition. Blade edges are clean, with no visible nicks. Blade polish is high, with some runner marks. WWII Bring Back Sword ETO Named

Lot # 2024 (Sale Order: 21 of 303)

Consigned directly from the family, this World War II bring back sword was mailed back home to Chicago, IL by PFC C.J. Durston to “Mr. David Durston, 4148 N. Leavitt, Chicago, 18, Illinois” (as written on the wooden crate it was mailed in). This was an Imperial German sword and scabbard for an officer in the “1st Pomm Feld- Art. Rgt, No2.” As etched on the blade. At one time this was a beautiful sword with Attention to detail especially on the blade. Beautifully etched on both sides the blade exhibits decorative elements that include the unit on one side of the blade surrounded by decorative elements including a officer on horseback towards the base of the blade. The other side of the blade has similar decorative elements with the most notable a group of 4 mounted soldiers pulling a field artillery piece. The blade is unsharpened and has been repaired between 7 and 10 inches from the tip of the sword. The sharkskin grip is in good shape, with tight and firm wire wrapping it. The washer at the base of the blade is partially present. Measurements of the sword are 36.5” long and blade is 30.5 long. Scabbard is 32.75 long. Overall length together is 37.75”. There is damage to the scabbard that corresponds with the sword blade damage. It all makes sense when you see that the damage to both line up with the length of the wooden crate that was used to ship the sword home. The soldier inserted it into the crate with the sword handle well protected. Crate dimensions 5"x6" x29.5". War souvenirs acquire a certain patina over the years. This one is no exception. Aside from the damage incurred shipping it home, and subsequent repair, this sword has seen better days. Please see pictures. Further research is needed to see what unit PFC Durston would have served with in the US Army.

WWII Japanese GI Bring Back Sword, Photo, Named

Lot # 2025 (Sale Order: 22 of 303)

American GI bring-back Japanese sword, with lacquered wood scabbard and leather combat cover. Blade measures 25.75”. Long point tip is sharp with some scuffs and darkening spots. Blade edge is clean and exhibits wear and some darkened spots, but no nicks. Temper line is a dip and a dot at its peak pattern. Overall sword length is 36.75”. The habaki (collar) is solid. Tsuba (guard) is bronze with four flowers on the corner of each side. There is a 6-character signature on one sides of the tang, and what looks to be the number 8 stamped near the tang base on the other side. The tang base is an uneven U shape. The tsuka (handle) is traditional wood covered in shark skin and wrapped. The bronze pommel hardware retains a good amount of its light brown finish and functional swivel. Two characters on it translate as “Shibata” (via google translate) The peg that secures the handle to the tang needs to be replaced. Affixed to the sword is a loop, brown and blue, with no tassel at end. The scabbard is traditional lacquered wood, and is in a leather combat scabbard cover that has laced enclosure to secure it. The leather is in poor to fair condition overall, with multiple scattered abrasions throughout and loss of material above the loop near the neck. The surface of the wooden scabbard has also suffered from the lack of protection the leather afforded. The scabbard measures: 27.5” long. Inside the opening is written in pencil “061” on either side. The leather strap that would secure the sword into the scabbard is missing as well as the area of the leather cover that it would affix to. Overall length of sword in scabbard is 37.25”. T3 George Cyril Hanley was a Surgical Technician in the 41st Infantry (Sunset) Division, and was serving in the Pacific Theater of Operations when his unit was sent to Japan for occupation duty. For his service he earned a Asiatic-Pacific theater ribbon w/one bronze battle star, Philippine Liberation Ribbon Victory Medal, Good Conduct Ribbon, Army of Occupation Medal-Japan. Included with the sword is 1) an original 2.25”x3.25” photo print of T3 Hanley in uniform, in front of his ambulance. 2) A copy of his WG AGO Form 53 and 55 which details his service. 2) Copy of 3 page essay he wrote on the end of the war and occupation duty in Japan for a public speaking course in 1953. 3) Statement from consigner of where and how her father acquired the sword. American GI bring-back Japanese sword, with lacquered wood scabbard and leather combat cover. Blade measures 25.75”. Long point tip is sharp with some scuffs and darkenin...moreg spots. WWII Japanese Type 95 NCO Shin-Gunto Sword SN 9587

Lot # 2027 (Sale Order: 24 of 303)

WWII Japanese Type 95 NCO shin-gunto, non-commissioned officers sword. Pre-1945, later modeled Aluminum tsuka (handle) made to resemble a traditionally cloth wrapped grip. Serial number on blade: “9587” matches that on scabbard neck “9587”. This is a machine made sword, for mass production and for use by officers who did not bring a family sword with them into combat. Blade measures 26.5”. Medium point tip has some small abrasions and scuffs. Blade edge has 4 very small nicks present. Overall sword length: 36.25”. The habaki (collar) is clean and bright. Tsuba (guard) is bronze with simple, clean design. The thumb catch operates smoothly and has good spring-back. The steel scabbard retains 10% of its painted finish. It is likely that this was repainted, because there is an underlying paint below the larger painted surface. White cloth tape affixed to surface near collar reads in ink “D.W. Johnson”. Overall length of sword in scabbard is 38.25”. This sword speaks to you when held. A solid unmolested wartime souvenir from the Pacific Theater of Operations. Please see photos.
