Ca. 1890 Sitting Bull Arrest Authorization Letters

Lot # 265 (Sale Order: 231 of 715)

Presented in this lot is a collection of Letters from Standing Rock Indian Service Agent James McLaughlin, circa 1883 and 1890, authorization to arrest Sitting Bull. Provenance: From the John Kleinschmidt collection which was on loan to the C.M. Russell Museum from 1987 to 1993 and included in the "The Cowboy West: 100 Years of Photography 1992-1993 exhibit. These early examples of the letters are a powerful collection of history of the Great Sioux Nation at the end of the 19th century. These letters (which are old duplicates from the originals) are attributed to Colonel Alfred Burton Welch who was well known for his extensive artifact collection and lifelong association with the Sioux nations. The Welch Dakota Papers include thousands of pages of oral interviews, writings, newspaper articles and photographs of the Sioux, Arikara, Hidatsa and Mandan peoples. Welch is credited as the first white man adopted into the Yanktonai Sioux, a separate band from the Yankton Sioux; both are considered Western Dakota people. The first letter dated September 15, 1883 was addressed to Philip Wells, interpreter and chief of Indian police of the Standing Rock Agency, Dakota Territory and sent from James McLaughlin Indian Agent. This letter gave Wells instructions to accompany Sioux Indians on a buffalo hunt and prevent them from"molesting" any persons trespassing on the reservation. Wells supervised one of the last great buffalo hunts in which 2,800 Indians took part. Three letters (photocopies from the originals) are associated to Indian Agent James McLaughlins ordering the arrest of Sitting Bull on December 14, 1890. One letter with a handwritten time of 12:30 A. M. December 14, 1890, is written in the Dakotah language and translated into English, from Indian police Lt. Bull Head who advised Sitting Bull was preparing to go to the Pine Ridge Reservation where the Ghost Dance movement was strong. McLaughlins arrest authorization letter has a handwritten time of 4:40 P.M., December 14, 1890. The following day, Sitting Bull was shot and killed by Indian police during the arrest attempt. The letters each measure 8"W x 10"L approximately.

Rare "Done in the Open" Frederic Remington 1902

Lot # 276 (Sale Order: 241 of 715)

Presented in this lot is a Rare Edition "Done in the Open, Drawings by Frederick Remington," 1902 copyright Robert Howard Russell, P. F. Collier & Son Publisher, New York. "Done In The Open Drawings by Frederic Remington" with an introduction and verses Owen Wister and others, is a fascinating, early 20th-century collection of outdoor sketches by Frederic Remington and a verse collection published by American author, Owen Wister. The book contains 72 Frederic Remington art pieces with a few in color. The piece shows 12 double page drawings, 28 full page drawings, and 32 smaller drawings. Each of the drawings is accompanied by the arts title and a verse or poem about the piece. The book was a collaboration with the artist, Frederic Sackrider Remington (1861-1909), the verses being written to accompany Remingtons drawings. Remington was an American painter, illustrator, sculptor, and writer who specialized in the genre of Western American Art. His works are known for depicting the Western United States in the last quarter of the 19th century and featuring such images as cowboys, American Indians, and the US Cavalry. Remingtons collaboration with Wister on The Evolution of the Cowpuncher, published by Harpers Monthly in September 1893, was the first statement of the mythical cowboy in American literature, spawning the entire genre of Western fiction, films, and theater that followed. Remington provided the concept of the project, its factual content, and its illustrations and Wister supplied the stories, sometimes altering Remingtons ideas. Remingtons prototype cowboys were Mexican rancheros, but Wister made the American cowboys descendants of Saxons. In truth, they were both partially right, as the first American cowboys were both the ranchers who tended the cattle and horses of the American Revolutionary Army on Long Island and the Mexicans who ranched in the Arizona and California territories. Remington was one of the first American artists to illustrate the true gait of the horse in motion (along with Thomas Eakins), The galloping horse became Remingtons signature subject, which was copied and interpreted by many Western artists who followed him to adopt the correct anatomical motion. Though criticized by some for his use of photography, Remington often created depictions that slightly exaggerated natural motion to satisfy the eye. He wrote that "the artist must know more than the camera... (the horse must be) incorrectly drawn from the photographic standpoint (to achieve the desired effect)." Also, noteworthy was Remingtons invention of "cowboy" sculpture. From his inaugural piece, "The Bronco Buster", he created an art form which is still very popular among collectors of Western art. He has been called the "Father of Cowboy Sculpture." This cream and black colored cloth hardcover is in fair to nice condition. The front cover decorated with the Remington portrait, "Infantry Soldier", includes a cloth back strip on the spine. Intact pages exhibit age tanning. Covers and spine exhibit soiling, staining, edge wear noted. Inner hinges loose. There is evidence of spine repairs. The book measures 16.5"L x 11.5"W x .5"D; weight 3lb 4oz.*

C. 1858-1870 George Armfield Original Oil Painting

Lot # 281 (Sale Order: 246 of 715)

For your consideration is an Original George Armfield Oil on Canvas Painting, Three Dogs, cireca 1858-1870. Reverse of canvas is marked with the stamp of "R. Davis Chenies Mews 10 Huntley St, Tottenham Court Road". Robert Davis (b. c.1824) would appear to be the individual recorded in the 1851 census as artists colourman, listed in 1857 as artists’ canvas primer. He is listed in the National Portrait Gallery research section under "British artists suppliers, 1650-1950 - D. This canvas would have been attended circa 1858-1870. Armfield is regarded as one of Victorian England’s finer animal artists and his work as sought-after as it was in his own lifetime. Although this piece is unsigned, as is the case for most artists, his singular style and unique tight brushstrokes are his signature. The artist’s use of light is just mesmerizing. Not only can you see the wonderfully depicted expressions of the dogs, but their fur is painted marvelously. As with many of his paintings, the principle focus is on the dogs and their expressions. George Armfield (1808-1893) was a British genre artist specializing in oil paintings of domesticated dogs, probably the most prolific dog painter of the nineteenth century. He was an avid sportsman as well as being a prolific and popular painter of sporting subjects. George exhibited thirty two paintings at the Royal Academy between 1840 and 1862 and exhibited regularly at the British Institute and at the Suffolk Street Galleries until 1875. Armfield painted dogs almost exclusively, especially terriers chasing birds, cats or mice and spaniels flushing ducks. With broad paint strokes and loose handling of the brush, the painter effectively represents the different textures of fur, grasses and sky. This painting is mounted in its original custom-made wood and gold gilt gesso elaborate Victorian frame. The frame is hand-finished, and the nuances of the hand-applied gilding is apparent. The painting is in very nice condition, no marring. The custom Victorian style frame is nicely preserved, some gesso loss noted. Visible art measures 8.5"W x 11.5"L, frame is 16.75"W x 19.75"L x 2"D, combined weight is 4lb, 8oz.
