Ornate French Hammer Double Barrel Shotgun, by Mathes
Lot # 53 (Sale Order: 53 of 885)
Serial no. 1877, 12 ga., 28-1/2" Bernard damascus barrels with a smooth concave rib with a gold inlay of Mathes Frere. Fully engraved French gray bar action with rebounding bar action locks. Engraving is game scenes with floral design with a matted background. Game includes dogs, Red deer stag and a Roe deer. Underside of action marked: Exption Universelle de 1878 in gold. Highly engraved high hammers, percussion fences, triggerguard with scroll support at front. Finely checkered straight grip stock of figured walnut, checkered butt with engraved heel and toe plates; front sling swivel, missing rear. Finely checkered fore-end is fixed to action. Barrels are released with a Mathes patent push-button release.

Condition:
Fine, as partially redone. Left barrel shows a dent at the muzzle. Right barrel shows a number of very light dents on the side. Bores show areas of very light pitting. Refinished stock shows some nicks and scratches. Heel and toe caps are proud of stock. Fore-end shows a bruising to checkering and a significant loss.

Serial no. 6921, 16 ga., 29-1/2" Krupp Prima steel barrels with a flat matted rib, case-hardened front side-swing underlever action with back action locks; action, locks and hammers engraved with floral and game scenes (dogs with game, red and roe deer and ducks). Opening lever with horn cover, floral designs with matted background, dished fences, low hammers, finely checkered half pistolgrip stock of well-figured walnut, Bavarian style cheekpiece, grip and rear left side of stock with floral and game scene carvings, sling swivels, grooved horn buttplate, finely checkered fore-end attached to action; barrels attached with wedge.

Condition:
Good. Barrels show a brown patina and shows some light dents. Bores show considerable pitting with areas of very heavy pitting. It is deemed that the gun is unsafe to fire due to heavy pitting. Action shows a gray patina with areas of staining. Left hammer screw replaced. Stock shows nicks and scratches with repaired crack at heel.
