Large silver dollar sized brothel token from the Gem Saloon in Tombstone Arizona Territory. Excellent condition with all markings clear and legible. This token is part of a lifelong collection of brothel tokens we were recently consigned to sell. The winner of this lot will receive the coin pictured below. Please be sure to view the rest of this auction to find the rest of the brothel tokens from this collection. Each token we were consigned is different and the full collection consisted of about a dozen of these coins/tokens. All of the tokens in the collection are in excellent condition and most are from the American West. In the wild west many towns prohibited prostitution. Soon after the laws were passed saloons and brothels started selling these tokens claiming they had no monetary value. They would then give the prostitutes the proceeds from the tokens claiming it was pay for waitressing. Because the tokens officially had no monetary value it was completely legal for men to give them to prostitutes in exchange for their services. Tokens also prevented up-selling by the women. The men liked using them because it allowed them to purchase the tokens during the day and go to the brothel or saloon without money on them, the women were known to steal cash and valuables out of the mens clothing while they slept. This inspired the creation of tokens for other items and services such as cigars, whiskey, and more....more
