This is a fabulous, finely woven Navajo Two Grey Hills wool weaving, the rug dates to circa 1960-1970’s from the ex-Dr. Martin Gingras collection. The rug exhibits a classic Two Grey Hills Navajo rug with very tightly woven fine wools showing colors of black, cream / white, grey / tans / browns, yellow and light sage green. The Two Grey Hills style was started in 1914, by George Bloomfield and Ed Davis at the Toadlena and Two Grey Hills Trading Post. These Navajo rugs are characterized by natural browns, tan, gray, ivory, white, and black. It is not unusual for the blacks to be oven-dyed. The patterns usually have a central diamond motif and intricate patterns. The Two Grey Hills weavings are noted for their high quality construction. The trading post is located in northwest New Mexico, south of Shiprock and northeast of the Crystal area. This is a rare example with a light sage green coloring. For an example of Two Grey Hills from the second-half of the 20th-century with a light sage green see examples by Navajo weaver Gladys Shepard, who was most known for their Burntwater examples. The rug appears to have handspun wool with natural vegetal dye and aniline dyes with a very tight weave that appears well kept. The rug was examined in the frame. The framing is professionally done with antiglare glass. Provenance: From the ex-collection of Dr. Martin Gingras, Rochester, New York; ex-Hindman Freeman’s auction. Frame measures 45.25-inches by 36-inches and 1-inch thick, visible rug area totals 41.5-inches by 31-inches including fringes, body of rug is 37-inches by 28-inches.
