Caliber: .36 Caliber Percussion

Action Type: Single Action Revolver with a Six-Shot Cylinder

Markings: The top of the barrel is marked “ADDRESS SAML COLT NEW-YORK CITY.” The left side of the frame is marked "COLT’S PATENT." The cylinder is engraved with the classic Naval Battle scene. The serial number 6401 is marked on the barrel, frame, trigger guard, backstrap, and cylinder (matching numbers).

Barrel Length: 7.5” Octagonal Barrel

Sights / Optics: Front Sight: A brass bead, integral to the barrel. Rear Sight: A notch cut into the hammer, which aligns with the front bead when cocked.

Grip Configuration & Condition: The grips are smooth varnished walnut, well-fitted to the frame. They show a noticeable scratch on the left side and otherwise minor handling marks, rating in Very Good condition overall.

Type of Finish: Blued Barrel & Cylinder, Case Hardened Frame, Silver-Plated Brass Grip Frame

Finish Originality: Original

Bore Condition: The bore is bright, with strong rifling. There is no visible erosion or pitting, and no signs of past black powder use. In this writer’s opinion, the bore rates 10/10.

Overall Condition: This revolver retains about 97% of its original finish. There are some light scratches visible on the side of the barrel and a noticeable scratch on the left grip panel. The case-hardened frame remains vibrant and attractive, and the silver-plated grip frame has a pleasing natural patina. The cylinder retains a crisp, detailed Naval Battle roll engraving with minimal wear. The percussion nipples show only minor wear and no corrosion. The screw heads are sharp, and all markings remain crisp and clear. Overall, this revolver rates in Excellent condition.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We did not fire this revolver. As with all black powder firearms, a thorough cleaning and inspection is recommended before use. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.

Box, Paperwork & Accessories: This revolver comes with an attractive and historically inspired accessory set including a Silver-plated powder flask embossed "COLT'S PATENT" with patriotic and arms motifs, back-stamped "MADE IN ENGLAND/DIXON & SONS," a second-generation accessory circa 1970s. The flask retains nearly all of its silver-plated finish, with minor storage marks and a pleasant patina. Also included is a Navy Arms Co. marked percussion cap tin bearing an anchor logo, a key for the lockable wooden display case, and the fitted lockable wooden display case custom-made to accommodate the revolver and accessories.

Our Assessment: The Colt 1851 Navy remains among Colt’s most iconic percussion revolvers, recognized for its graceful lines, historical significance, and reliability. This revolver, a high-quality 2nd Generation Colt Black Powder Series produced in the 1970, exemplifies Colt’s meticulous efforts to faithfully recreate the original Colt Navy revolver while meeting the highest standards of craftsmanship and finish.

This example, serial number 6401, remains in excellent condition, displaying 97% original finish with only minor imperfections—light scratches on the barrel and a noticeable scratch on the left grip panel. Such imperfections do little to diminish the revolver’s desirability, as it remains visually striking and mechanically sound. Complemented by an authentic accessory set, including a highly desirable Dixon & Sons silver-plated flask and a collectible Navy Arms Co. percussion cap tin, this revolver presents exceptionally well in its elegant lockable wooden case.

For collectors and enthusiasts alike, this Colt 1851 Navy represents a valuable opportunity to own an impressive example of Colt’s acclaimed second-generation revolvers. Whether displayed, collected, or used in historically inspired black powder shooting events, this revolver provides both tangible history and aesthetic charm that Colt aficionados highly prize.
