Our Assessment: The Colt 1861 Navy revolver is widely regarded as one of the finest percussion revolvers ever produced. An improvement over the earlier 1851 Navy, the 1861 Navy featured a more streamlined, rounded barrel and loading lever, making it sleeker and more refined.
Chambered in .36 caliber, this model was highly regarded for its balance and accuracy. It was a favored sidearm among both Union and Confederate troops during the Civil War, seeing extensive battlefield use. Martially marked examples like this one are particularly desirable, as they were issued to military personnel, making them an authentic part of American history.
Manufactured between 1861 and 1873, the Colt 1861 Navy represents the peak of Colt’s percussion era, before the transition to metallic cartridge firearms. Collectors and historians alike recognize it as one of Colt’s last great percussion designs.
This particular revolver, produced in 1864, features martial markings, matching serial numbers, and a well-worn but honest patina that speaks to its battlefield use. While the loading lever is currently stuck, it retains a solid historical presence, making it a worthy candidate for restoration or display.
For collectors of Civil War-era firearms, Colt enthusiasts, or those looking to own a true piece of American history, this 1861 Navy is an exceptional find that embodies both the artistry and practicality of 19th-century firearms design. Good luck with your bid.
