Custom Winchester Model 52-B Bolt Action Single Shot Target Rifle, #59577B, .22 LR cal., 29" custom "Eric Johnson" bull barrel, with blue finish. The smooth walnut one-piece heavy target pistol grip stock features an accessory rail, 2.25" wide beavertail forend, and cheekpiece. Fitted with three (3) target blocks and an extra set of drilled and tapped holes filled with screws. Additionally, there is a base for an aperture sight at the left rear of the receiver. Factory markings are clear with Winchester "WP" proof on the left side of the receiver at the breech. Barrel is marked, "MADE IN U.S.A. / ERIC JOHNSON" with a 5-pointed star underneath. Mfg'd 1940. Rifle is in near fine overall condition, retaining approx. 90%-92% thinning blue finish with light wear at the muzzle, scattered scratches and handling marks. Trigger guard has drifted to plum color with spots of mild corrosion and edge wear. Stock with light scratches and bruising, worse on the left side. Buttstock ends with a poorly fitted Pachmayr solid rubber recoil pad, providing a 13.25" LOP. Action is smooth with a crisp trigger. Bore is fine with well-defined rifling. Eric Johnson was a competitive shooter, winning the titles of 1926 National Gallery Champion and 1929 National Small Bore Champion before becoming a noted gunsmith who worked for Hoffman Arms Co. prior to going into business for himself. He made barrels for rimfire rifles, and his mark typically included a single or series of stars. Est.: $800-$1,200. (C&R)
