Engraved Colt 1851 Navy Percussion Revolver, #198428, .36 cal., 7.5" octagon barrel, silver plate and color case hardened finish, checkered ivory two-piece grips with ornate "Mexican Eagle" carved into the left panel, brass pin front and "V"-notch hammer rear sight, cap groove on right side of the frame, with large brass trigger guard. All-matching visible serial numbers, except backstrap (#198192). Mfg'd 1866. Revolver is in good overall condition, with the metal surfaces having gone to a mottled gray patina with pitting at the muzzle, scattered spots of dark corrosion and surface erosion along the barrel. Underside of the barrel and base of the loading lever display traces of old silver plated finish. Frame has gone to gray with areas of light corrosion/rust, and a partially visible Colt patent date on the left side. Cylinder displays a legible serial number. Brass straps and trigger guard have lost all of the silver plate, showing a pleasant patina with nicks and indentations. Revolver displays scroll and punch dot engraving reminiscent of L.D. Nimschke with the wolf heads on both sides of the hammer. Cylinder is also scroll engraved. The nipples are worn but intact, with the safety tabs hammered flat. Grips are near fine, with an attractive patina, and sharp checkering detail. Right panel has a full-length vertical crack and there is a small chip on the left. The carved eagle is well articulated and shows age. Action functions intermittently and will require attention. Bore is fair with moderate erosion and shallow pitting in areas; rifling remains visible. Est.: $1,500-$2,500. (Antique)
