Engraved Colt 1851 Navy Percussion Revolver, #44483, .36 cal., 7.5" octagon barrel, blue and color case hardened finish, smooth two-piece ivory grips, brass pin front and fixed "V"-notch hammer rear sight, with small brass trigger guard. All-matching serial numbers, including the wedge and arbor. Mfg'd 1855. Revolver is in very good overall condition with the metal surfaces having gone to an even gray patina. Barrel shows cleaning with pinprick pitting on both sides, sharp edges, and some chemical coloration treatment added. Frame displays traces of smoky color case hardened finish, which is an even gray with areas of minor surface erosion. Cylinder shows areas of pinprick pitting and legible serial number, retaining 65%-70% naval cylinder scene, partial Ormsby signature and engagement date. Revolver displays typical Gustave Young style punch dot and scroll engraving with a dog icon in front of the wedge, and wolf heads on both sides of the hammer. The nipples are all intact and not deformed, while the safety tabs are hammered flat. Left side of the frame shows a crisp hand-cut "COLT'S PATENT". Straps have been cleaned and chemical color added. Screw heads are very good, engraved on the right side. Grips are very good with numerous age cracks and a pleasing taffy patina. They show the expected shrinkage from age and appear to have been on the pistol for a long time. Action functions well and holds at both positions. Bore is fair with scattered shallow pitting and visible rifling. Includes a Colt factory letter, informing that this revolver will not letter. Est.: $3,000-$4,000. (Antique)
