Named Imperial German Lion Head Naval Officers Sword, 29.25" Damascus blade, obverse is marked "(crossed swords)/G. B&S"; reverse with Weyersberg Kirschbaum & Cie logo consisting of a king and knight's head. Gilded lion head pommel with red and green eyes, and mane that extends down the backstrap. Ivory handle with twisted silver wire. Replacement scabbard with black finish and single loose suspension ring. Sword is very good overall, Damascus pattern is visible, with intermittent spots of darkening and mild pitting. Tip is sharp and there are no major blemishes along the edge. Hilt has a pleasing uncleaned patina, showing moderate wear to the gilding, and a few spots of darkening. Handle with some movement, showing normal yellow toning from age. There is a thin chip missing from below the lion's head, and another slightly larger piece from the front edge, above the ferrule. Twisted wire wrap remains secure. Scabbard is fair and paint was applied over old rust and blemishes, some now showing through in the areas of finish loss. No dents. Est.: $900-$1,200.
