R. Dobler Percussion Full-Stock Kentucky Rifle, #NVSN, approx. .32 cal., 38" octagon barrel, brown finish, smooth faux tiger maple full-length stock with hardwood ramrod, brass mountings and detailed patchbox, double set triggers, dovetailed German silver knife blade front sight, and fixed "V"-notch rear sight. Marked "R. DOBLER WHEELING, W. VA.", on the underside of the buttstock. Rifle is in very good overall condition, showing thinning brown finish, scrapes, scratches and areas of light surface rust. There is light corrosion and minor pitting along the barrel with edge wear and nicks. Lock shows illegible faint markings which are indiscernible due to fowling and light pitting from firing. Barrel address is faintly visible, however illegible due to wear. Stock is good with a 24" repair extending back from the muzzle, which has been striped artificially to resemble tiger maple. Stock shows expected marks from years of use. Brass mountings include a nose cap, ramrod retaining tubes, side support, articulated finger rest trigger guard, elaborate patchbox (with clasp) and smooth crescent buttplate, all with a pleasing patina. Trigger guard is missing the front fastening screw and hangs loose. Patchbox clasp functions as intended and holds securely. Buttstock ends with a smooth brass buttplate, providing a 12.5" LOP. Mechanically, the action functions and holds at full-cock. Double set triggers are also functioning at the time of description. Bore has been relined to .32 cal. Richard Dobler was a noted gunsmith/rifle maker in West Virginia from 1819-1895, although the barrel address would indicate original work by an earlier smith. This is an interesting rifle that deserves further research. Est.: $500-$700. (Antique)
