" 'I always felt embarrassed by the whole goddamn thing,' he said, 'but I had to do it.' "[3] Fasanel...more

Large Manon Elder CROSSROADS Motorcycle Art Canvas

        Lot # 10126 (Sale Order: 27 of 293)

This handsome and collectible limited edition motorcylce art print is by well-known artist Manon Elder:

        • "Crossroads"
        • Giclée on canvas
        • 26 × 58
        • Limited edition of 200
        • Signed by the artist
        • Excellent condition; never mounted, matted or framed
        • Certificate of Authenticity
This biographical information is from the artist's web site:
Manon Elder's initial travels into motorcycle art started in 2001 when the subject of a portrait sitting asked to be painted on his Harley. She obliged and was surprised by her attraction to painting chrome surfaces and mechanical intricacies. Intrigued by the relationship between motorcycle and the rider, Elder — a portrait painter for 15 years before that — saw the glimmerings of a new path open up. She found that the motorcycle culture resonated with her own desire to experience new adventures in new locations.
"In 2003, Elder had a chance to pursue this new inspiration and did so with an enthusiastic vengeance. She has immersed herself in understanding the essence of the riding experience: the relationships between the bikes, the riders and the landscapes they travel through.
"Before a photo is taken or a brush dipped in paint, Elder gets to know the riders and their bikes. She focuses on capturing the energy of the moment as well as the multitude of details that must be accurately rendered on canvas. While paintings are in progress, many of her motorcycle-rider subjects offer her guidance to ensure the authenticity of their bike's structure. Attention to detail is a hallmark of her work."
An exciting addition to any collection or décor!

American artist David Salle (b.1952) first caught the attention of the art world in the early 1980s through his randomly constructed paintings employing thick application of paint along with various images. Salle states: "When people started paying attention to my work, it seemed so unlikely that somehow it wasn't so remarkable. I made my work for a small audience of friends, other artists mostly, and that has not really changed. At the same time, having shows is a way of seeing if the work resonates with anyone else."

          M. Watanabe LE Art Mezzotint TWO BODIES Sensual Nude

          Lot # 10136 (Sale Order: 37 of 293)

"I am absolutely convinced that at the heart of all things existing in this world, there is something very simple and pure which goes beyond the complexity of appearances," says the artist Mikio Watanabe. This conviction, perhaps, is what makes Watanabe's mezzotints of the naked female form so mesmerizing: Title: "Duetto III" ("Two Bodies III") 1994 Mezzotint on Rives de Lin Moulin du Gue paper; all four edges softly deckled Numbered from a limited edition of 90, plus XXX Roman Signed in pencil in the margin LR Sheet: 15 × 22 Image: 5½ × 12½ Very good condition; LR corner lightly creased; readily matted out Certificate of Authenticity Watanabe creates a mezzotint by repeatedly pressing a curved, serrated mezzotint rocker over the surface of a copper plate until has received many thousands of tiny indentations from this tool. This procedure is extremely time-consuming — most of the plates take 70 - 80 hours to produce — but plates made this way yield velvety blacks that can be obtained no other way. After the entire surface of the plate has been roughened, scraper and burnishers are used to raise tones of gray and white. "During the slow process of engraving, as I scrape the burrs that I have incised on the copper plate and then polish it, the sensitivity which lies inside me can be revealed. Giving shape and light to what was before absolute darkness, I try to feel this universe of purity which exists deep inside the human body," says the artist. Mikio Watanabe (Japan, b. 1954) completed his studies in Tokyo in 1977 and settled in Paris, where he learned engraving techniques at the Atelier 17. Since 1981, Mikio Watanabe has focused on mezzotint and his works can be found in many p...more

Chuck Close often shoots faces, so it's interesting here that he chose to focus on the torsos, making this portrait a rather different one for him, but still with his signature impact.

Chuck Close (1940- ) is widely known for his Photo-Realism in the Pop Art style. His early inspiration was a painter, Jackson Pollock, who inspired his own painting. His art training included a B.F.A. and M.F.A. degree with highest honors from Yale University, as well as a Fulbright Scholarship. His subjects for photographs often included people he knew, and he depicted everything with stark realism. His work has appeared in numerous exhibitions around the world, and can be found in many public and private collections. He has influenced generations of photographers, and remains an extremely popular artist to this day.
