Description

Alderfer Auction is honored to present the Medals, Militaria and British Empire collection of Mr. Stanley R. Bright (1933-2021) in a single owner offering. Mr. Bright was a graduate of Rutgers University and served his country in the United States Air Force. He later obtained his law degree from Rutgers Law School and was an active member of the bar in several states.

In addition to being a productive member of the legal community, Mr. Bright was a student of history, a collector of military medals, historical materials, and items related to the British monarchy. His interest in materials related to the British Empire can be traced back to his English born parents. A great portion of his interest in medals and militaria arose from his uncles, who served in the Royal Air Force during World War II.

His collecting passion and scholarly approach enabled Mr. Bright to amass a fine representative collection of British medals, particularly those awarded in World War I for soldier’s service in France, Gallipoli and other European battlefields. The auction will include...

Canada General Service Medal 1866

Canada General Service Medal 1866 with "FENIAN RAID 1866" bar. Medal is impressed named on rim " Pte. W. J. Ramsay, 2nd. Q. O. R. ". The Queen's Own Rifles of Toronto were called out on active service from March 8 to 31 and from June 1 to 22, 1866. During this time the battalion fought on the Niagara frontier. The Queen's Own Rifles first saw combat and sustained nine killed in action during the Battle of Ridgeway in 1866. Northwest Canada Medal 1885 engraved named on rim "Pte. W. G. KERR, A Co MIDD. BATT". Kerr was entitled to "Saskatchewan" bar that this medal lacks. This medal was issued to the soldiers, volunteers, and North-West Mounted Police personnel who participated in putting down the North-West Canadian Rebellion in 1885. British Ashantee Medal (1873-1874) with "COOMASSIE" bar and engraved named on rim "2180 Pte. A. G. WILLIAMS. 2. BN. RIFLE BDE. 1873-4." The medal was awarded to British, Colonial and allied native forces who were deployed against the army of the Ashanti King Kofi Karikari, during the Ashantee War which lasted from June 1873 to February 1874. The "COOMASSIE" bar was awarded to those present at the Battle of Amoaful and the capture of Coomassie and those protecting the lines of communication north of the Prah river. Ribbon exhibits wear.
