Description

Alderfer Auction is honored to present the Medals, Militaria and British Empire collection of Mr. Stanley R. Bright (1933-2021) in a single owner offering. Mr. Bright was a graduate of Rutgers University and served his country in the United States Air Force. He later obtained his law degree from Rutgers Law School and was an active member of the bar in several states.

In addition to being a productive member of the legal community, Mr. Bright was a student of history, a collector of military medals, historical materials, and items related to the British monarchy. His interest in materials related to the British Empire can be traced back to his English born parents. A great portion of his interest in medals and militaria arose from his uncles, who served in the Royal Air Force during World War II.

His collecting passion and scholarly approach enabled Mr. Bright to amass a fine representative collection of British medals, particularly those awarded in World War I for soldier’s service in France, Gallipoli and other European battlefields. The auction will include...

Copeland Spode Tyg (three-handled loving cup) Commemorating the Boer War (1899-1900) that presents thee panels including; 1.) profile bust of Queen Victoria, inscribed Victoria Queen and Empress, Comforter of the Afflicted, surrounded by the Union Jack and flags and seals of the above the motto "Equal Rights for All". 2.) Portrait medallions of Field Marshal Lord Roberts (Commander in Chief) and the Marquis of Salisbury (Prime Minister), inscribed and titled with mottos "Imperial Federation" and "Unity is Strength". 3.) Wilkinson Toby Jugs of World War I Leaders

Collection of 3 Wilkinson Toby jugs including; 1.) Toby jug of a seated David Lloyd George in court dress holding a large artillery shell marked "SHELL OUT". Jug measures 10" in height and was designed by Francis Carruthers Gould, a famous political cartoonist at the time. Bottom of jug presents marking of Wilkinson Ltd. Royal Staffordshire Pottery, and the mark of Soane & Smith as retailer and the facsimile signature of Francis Carruther Gould. Hat area exhibits break and repair. 2.) Toby jug of a seated French Marshal Foch in uniform holding a champagne bottle inscribed "Au Diable le Kaiser". Jug measures 12.5" in height and was designed by Francis Carruthers Gould, a famous political cartoonist at the time. Bottom of jug presents marking of Wilkinson Ltd. Royal Staffordshire Pottery, and the mark of Soane & Smith as retailer and the facsimile signature of Francis Carruther Gould. Bottom edge of jug exhibits area of chipping with loss and some glaze loss to back of champagne bottle. 3.) Toby jug of a seated Admiral Beatty in uniform holding a large artillery shell marked "DREAD NOUGHT".
