Winchester Model 1895 Saddle Ring Carbine

Lot # 1186 (Sale Order: 187 of 888)

serial #407684B, 30-06, 22'' barrel with a bright excellent bore. The barrel and bolt of this carbine retain about 90% original blue with most of the loss due to thinning to gray patina and small dings along the left side of the barrel, some scattered light oxidation staining and handling marks. The action has mostly worn to gunmetal-gray patina showing scattered light oxidation staining, some tiny pinprick pitting and streaks of bright blue lurking about in the more protected areas particularly on the lever. The magazine retains perhaps 70% original bright blue with the balance toned to gray patina. The straight grip walnut buttstock, finger groove forend and handguard remain in about very good condition as lightly refinished long ago showing a couple thin cracks at the upper tang, thin 1'' cracks at the top end of handguard, thin 3 1/2'' crack at the left edge of the forend, a 2'' portion at the rear left edge of the handguard that appears to have been purposely removed for some reason and overall handling marks. The carbine is equipped with standard carbine rear sight, Marble's Sheard brass bead front, intact saddle ring and a period ventilated red rubber ''Red Head'' buttpad providing a 12 1/2'' length of pull. The mechanism seems to function well and the carbine will probably be a fine shooter. (136520-3681) {C&R} [Richard ''Stretch'' Kennedy Collection]

Winchester Model 1894 Special Order Takedown Rifle

Lot # 1188 (Sale Order: 189 of 888)

serial #46970, 30 WCF, 26'' round barrel with half magazine and a very good bore showing some light oxidation, frosting and strong rifling throughout. The special order features of this antique rifle include the takedown and half magazine. The barrel and magazine tube are mostly a dull gray-brown patina showing scattered light scratches, spots of pinprick pitting and oxidation staining. The action retains perhaps 10% original blue mostly present at the tangs and some strong streaks along the left side frame the remainder toned to gray-brown patina showing scattered moderate scratches and freckling. The lever has also mostly toned to dark brown patina but still retains a small spot or two of faint case-hardened colors lurking about the left side as well as some colors remaining on the hammer. The barrel marking is the correct early two line variation and the upper tang has the appropriate 1894 patent date; the markings are a little soft but mostly visible. The plain straight grip walnut buttstock and forend remain in about good overall condition showing an about 3'' thin u-shaped crack at the right side wrist, a thin 2'' crack left of upper tang, a stretch of moderate to heavy scratches on the right side forend, some overall dings, handling marks and areas still showing some rather attractive figure. The rifle is sighted with a three position flip-up rear sight with one blade broken off and the front sight blade insert is also missing. The action seems to function normally albeit a little sluggishly. This rifle has seen some honest use but is still a solid early example.
