Winchester Model 1886 Lightweight Lever Action Rifle

Lot # 26 (Sale Order: 26 of 1099)

serial #129085, 45-70 Govt, 22" barrel with a very good bore which shows strong rifling but with minor frosting within the grooves and a few light pits nearer the muzzle. The barrel and magazine tube retain perhaps 90%-92% original blue, the barrel showing a bit more wear which has toned to a dark gray patina, with some rub marks to pewter and a few light handling marks or scratches here and there. The magazine tube hanger and nosecap have toned to a dark plum-gray patina. The receiver retains some very good original blue, perhaps 85% remaining on the flats while the top radius and carry point of frame have toned to a pewter and plum patina with light dings and handling marks sparsely scattered about, a few more moderate along the left receiver flat. The hammer retains some good color case-hardening while the lever has toned primarily to a silvery and gray case-hardened patina with generous traces of colors at the root. The shotgun butt-equipped buttstock rates very good with nearly all its original varnish and near overall minor dings and handling marks, the forend shows a bit more wear with strong traces of original varnish; the rifle has what appears to be original sling swivel eyelets. There is a Lyman half-moon No. 4 ivory hunting front sight in place and what is likely the original sporting No. 22 rear sight (the bead insert is not present on the front sight). An attractive, yet also very usable, 1886 lightweight in the most desirable of calibers. (37233-5) {C&R}

Winchester Model 1886 Lightweight Lever Action Rifle

Lot # 27 (Sale Order: 27 of 1099)

serial #111635, 45-70 Govt, 22" barrel with a bright excellent bore showing sharp crisp rifling. The barrel is a smooth dull pewter gray and darker gray patina with the button magazine a silvery pewter, but the nosecap retaining very good pale original blue and light wear to pewter. The receiver retains perhaps 60% original blue on the flats while the top radius and carry point of frame have toned to a silvery pewter patina which is quite nice, the character of the metal being smooth overall, the loading gate with some generous trace fire temper blue in the recess. The hammer retains some very good color case-hardening along its sides while the lever has toned primarily to a silvery case-hardened patina with generous traces of colors at the root. The shotgun butt-equipped buttstock rates very good plus to near excellent with strong original varnish in the area of the butt, faded to bare wood in the grasping areas around the tang; there is a tiny chip at the toe which would be an easy repair, the wood is unaffected. The forend rates very good as well, now pretty much devoid of finish with minor handling marks and dings expected from field use. There is a Lyman half-moon No. 4 ivory hunting front sight in place and what is likely the original sporting No. 22 rear sight as well. A very attractive 1886 lightweight in a very versatile caliber that could be hunted, while still maintaining solid investment potential. (37292-64) {C&R} [Tom Varrell Collection]

Lot # 28 (Sale Order: 28 of 1099)

serial #221342, 38 WCF, 24" octagon barrel with a bright excellent bore. The barrel and magazine tube on this lovely rifle retain about 97% original blue showing only some loss at the muzzle where it has toned to brown, showing some sparse very light pinprick pitting, along with scattered handling marks here and there and some light remnants of oxidation staining; the nosecap retaining a similar amount of original blue. The receiver shows a bit more wear retaining about 95% original blue, the loss due to some flaking along the top front radius and carry area of the belly of the frame, showing some light fabric imprints wear a contaminated case or patch touched the blue and removed it. The left side of the receiver shows the familiar length-wise striations and some light oxidation freckling. The hammer and lever show some vibrant color case-hardening, very strong on the lever. The buttplate has toned to a mottled smoky case-hardened patina with some generous traces of colors. The buttstock and forend rate about excellent with nearly all their original varnish and only minor dings and handling marks, there being one more moderate scuff on the left side of the buttstock at the wrist. serial #216618, 32 Win. Spcl., 26" barrel with a bright excellent bore. German Mauser Banner Marked P.08 Luger Pistol

Lot # 41 (Sale Order: 41 of 1099)

serial #8126y, 9 mm, 4" barrel with a bright excellent bore. This rather nice and somewhat enigmatic commercial Luger retains 98% to near 99% original blue over a hasty wartime polish, all the parts being blued. The pistol has the Mauser banner on the toggle and is "42" stamped above the chamber and all of the visible parts are appropriately numbered to the gun with the exception of the bolt hold open which is numbered "21" and the un-numbered grooved firing pin. The grips are checkered black resin and rate very good plus to near excellent with only some very minor flattened points, they are un-numbered. The pistol has commercial "Eagle/N" proofs on the left side of the receiver and left upper edge of the bolt itself and also on the face of the front sight ramp atop the sight boss at the muzzle. The gun is identical to the chamber date 42 pistol, serial #8267y (141 pistols from this example), pictured in Hallock and van de Kant"s monumental work, that example being a late 1942-1944 assembled pistol (this pistol shows the identical rounded edges on the toggle link seen on late guns). The right side of the receiver shows the "Eagle L" police acceptance mark as does the bottom of the aluminum-based magazine and the receiver rail above the sear is drilled for a police sear safety but none is installed, the sear however, which is properly numbered to the gun, was never machined for a sear safety. There is a single blued-body aluminum-based fxo-marked magazine included, it is correctly serial numbered to the gun and is Waffenamt 37 marked on its body. The gun is really lovely and appears very nearly unfired (the bolt face is immaculate). An excellent example of a late war "black widow" P.08. (37260-1) {C&R}

Rare German P.08 Luger Pistol By Simson & Co.

Lot # 42 (Sale Order: 42 of 1099)

serial #4343, 9 mm, 4" barrel with a very good plus bore which shows sharp rifling but with a few spots of light oxidation and some pinprick pitting. The metal surfaces on this quality P.08 retain about 90% original blue, the loss is due to some holster wear chiefly at the muzzle and high edges along with fading on the straps, there is some light surface oxidation present on the barrel and the very finest of pinprick pitting in a small area on its right side. The magazine release, takedown lever and ejector retain some very good strong colors while the trigger and safety have drifted primarily to pewter gray. The toggle is Simson & Co. Suhl" marked and there is no chamber marking, all of the visibly numbered parts are matching except the grooved firing pin which is numbered "28". The checkered walnut grips rate very good with mild flattening of the points, they are stamping numbered on the interior "4343" along with the Eagle/6 Simson inspection stamp. The Simson inspection stamps are located throughout the arm on nearly every part including the firing pin so it, while numbered to a different Luger, is still a correct Simson firing pin. The Simson Army test proof is found on the right side of the receiver and barrel along with the Simson Eagle/6 and Eagle/33 markings on the right side of the receiver. Included with the arm are two blued body magazines, one is aluminum-based and heavily numbered to the pistol during the period of use, with a Waffenamt 63 marking, the other magazine is blued with a black plastic base and "fxo" and Waffenamt 37 marked with the serial #"4343" electric DC-penciled on the magazines rear and left faces near the base. Included is a black hard-sided leather pistol holster from E.G. Leuner in Bautzen and which is 1941 dated and WaA159 stamped, the interior of the flap shows and antique ink pen marking which reads "4343" along with "AK/22882" which may be written in pencil rather than ink, it is somewhat difficult to decipher. There is a Waffenamt 63 marked takedown tool in place on the inside flap. Overall a very nice example of a rare Wehrmacht re-issued Simson & Co. Luger. (37330-52) {C&R}

The frame is primarily a mottled pewter patina with some generous traces of colors behind of the fences, showing the typical loose flowing scroll of the Ithaca grade fours along with crosshatched fences and waterfowl and pheasant scenes. The gold washed triggers retain perhaps 20% original plate with the triggerguard, forend iron and pushbutton release showing a later restored blue. The checkered walnut capped pistolgrip buttstock rates very good to near very good plus showing honest wear to the checkering but it appears unmolested, there are chips left and right of the upper tang which were re-affixed, they could be further made to disappear a bit better by a very good wood man; there is a tiny flake at the rear of the tang which was re-affixed as well. The buttstock shows some very lovely grain and has the fancy grade 4 checkering patterns we have come to know, the length of pull to the now collapsed Ithaca ventilated recoil pad is 14 3/4" with drops of 1 5/8" and 2 5/8". The splinter forend rates very good as well with its ebony tip intact and showing wear to the elaborate checkering pattern from use. The gun will need a bit of mechanical attention as the right ejector does not currently trip, it is likely a small matter. Overall a very usable grade 4E double ejectorgun that still will maintain its investment potential, with the added bonus of the rare sunken rib. (37346-2) {C&R}
