A massive example, circular, of deeply rounded cross-section, the quality of chiseling and engraving showing the hand of a master armorer. From the floriated central spike, 18 triangular panels radiate, nine of which bear cartouches containing mythological and biblical characters, each supported by interlocking vinework. The broad border bears nine gods and heroes in cartouches, likewise separated by interlocking vinework panels. The fine details superbly engraved, stippled ground retaining some original black lacquer. With rolled, roped border, and the original padding and velvet lining with remains of original leather grips, retained by fluted rivets. Mid-16th century. Patinated overall, small area of wear-through along rim. Diameter 59.4 cm. Condition III

With Surya, the Hindu Sun God represented at the center and four large polychromed lions hunting, feeding and at rest, rendered in expert detail, surrounded by scrolling red flowers and green ferns. A RARE AFRICAN HELMET

Lot # 363 (Sale Order: 363 of 540)      

Lotuko (or Latuka) People, South Sudan. An object of both protection and prestige, of characteristic ovate form, composed of human hair combined with fine twine derived from tree bark and felted to form a thick, rigid padding. A series of beaten brass plates are stitched to the exterior periphery, leaving the crown exposed; this is decorated with large brass studs. A black feather ball fixed to the terminal through two holes completes the decoration. Mid-19th century. For a contemporary description of such helmets, see J.G. Wood, The Natural History of Man [Volume I] 1868, London, Routledge, 505. A characteristically massive weapon, the steel hilt elements exceptionally well-wrought, with tapering octagonal pommel, the guard with double ring guards and elaborate quillons terminating in curled finials, the massive, wrenched wooden grip decorated with iron studs. The exceptional double-edged blade wrought with long, flat forte retaining its faceted triangular flanges and original leather covering. The central ridge incised with the date, 1607, between a pair of maker’s marks. Scalloped for its entire length, and retaining considerable original edge. Dated 1607. Minor wear and toning.
