The robust, heirloom lightly curved blade single-edged with narrow central fuller and wrought of fine Persian black wootz, elaborately chiseled and inlaid with gold at the forte on each side, including AMAL-E ISFAHANI (Work of Isfahani) and 1122 (1709/10 c.e.) and a baduh, or magic square. A very rare detached shield plate attributable by its coat of arms and motto, superbly embossed and chased from a single large plate of brass, the broad border with intertwining thistles, the center with the arms of Seawright, comprising a shield depicting an eagle surmounted by a helmet supporting a crest composed of a hand gripping a winged lance surrounded by lightning bolts, the border with the Seawright motto on a scroll, DEUM TIMETE (Fear God.) Diameter 35cm. Light wear, minor dents. The Seawrights (originally Sievewright, and changed by immigrants to the American Colonies to Searight) are noted in historical documents as early as 1688. AN IMPORTANT GEORGIAN DAGGER

The hilt a single section of elephant, brilliantly carved and undercut, depicting an armed warrior on horseback hunting a rhinoceros among huge trees, behind which the massive casements of windows set in the stone walls of a castle are visible. The handwrought blade emulates the Yemeni form: broad at the forte, sharply curved, continuously tapering and double edged, with the addition of a distinctive bisected rectangular central rib. The velvet-covered wooden scabbard with applied galloon, mounted in silver, the locket finely filigreed with a Christian cross, the chape with engraved motifs showing Persian influence, the finial of Arab thum form. The symmetrical hilt of kindjal form and the elaborate and diverse decorative techniques found on the scabbard are consistent with Georgian work between 1800-1850. Second quarter of the 19th century. Minor chip to pommel, velvet worn. The theme depicted on the hilt, and the form of the dagger itself, are drawn from the Tales of Amiran Darejaniani, the 11th century Georgian epic. The first recorded examples of this type of weapon in Russia occurred during the late 16th century.
