The camail of butted rings terminating in three points. The round steel shield with applied fretted border and four bosses with fretted borders, intricately inlaid in silver en suite with the helmet, together with gold highlights and bands of Persian poetry around a central floral disk. Both helmet and shield retain their original cotton lining. 19th century. Condition II

The buttcap with grotesque mask, the escutcheon a bust of Carlos III, King of Spain (ruled 1759-1788), crowned and festooned, identifiable by its distinctive profile. The fine patilla-type miquelet lock with engraved panels, the large-bore barrel with silver inlay to the octagonal breach and turnings. Mid-18th century. Light wear, ramrod replaced. Made for a Russian officer, the hilt and scabbard mounts of silver, finely engraved and nielloed in complex vinework and sun disk motifs. The fine, lightly curved blade well balanced, with complex fullering and struck GENOVA twice at the left forte. The wooden scabbard covered in leather, the silver mounts engraved and nielloed en suite with the hilt, the reverse of the locked with engraved and nielloed cartouche containing the Cyrillic initals, A.B., and the date, 1864. Dated 1864. Light wear. Quite similar examples belonging to the Caucasian Collection of the State Historical Museum, Moscow, appears in E.G. Astvatsaturian, Weapons of the Caucasian Peoples, St. Petersburg, Atlant Publishers, 2004, p. 258 and passim. Overall length 88.1cm. Condition II

A RARE POLISH/ HUNGARIAN PARADE SHIELD

Lot # 285 (Sale Order: 285 of 540)      

A fine, early Persian or Indian trophy shield wrought of wootz with characteristic forged-in border decorated with bands of vinework, forms the core to which elaborate gilded and engraved mounts embellished with a fine, translucent green enamel have been applied, including seven ovate tabs, a large, circular boss and rim in characteristic Polish-Hungarian style. The surface is additionally enriched with 24 gilded studs, each set with five turquoises, in concentric rings. The reverse with a pair of bronze lugs set with rings for a leather grip. 17th century. One boss restored, some turquoises lacking. Strong influence from Ottoman prototypes in Polish and Hungarian arms was common during the 17th century. See Z. Zygulski, POLSKA BRON (1982: Warsaw, Krajowa) p. 27, plate 13D for an Ottoman example in the Polish Army Museum, Warsaw, and p. 87, plate 78 and p. 91, plate 83, for two Polish examples in the Wawel Castle Collection, Krakow. A VICTORIAN-ERA ENGLISH TILTING ARMOR

A fine armor wrought in steel, made in Elizabethan tournament style. The helmet with high comb and characteristic visor and bevor sharing a pivot, the visor pierced for ventilation and secured to the skull by a hook, the neck lames articulated, with rolled, roped borders. Breastplate with central ridge, rolled and roped borders at the neck and arm gussets and flanged at the waist, the backplate likewise rolled and roped at neck and arm gussets. With complete arm defenses, the pauldrons with three upper plates and flared rims, the upper canons with rolled ridge, the rounded elbow cops with large couters, vambraces rolled at the cuff. The gauntlets well-articulated, with pointed cuffs, fingers intact. Each tasset wrought from a single plate with embossed lames over the velvet fauld with gilt braid border. The cuisses likewise wrought of a single plate with central ridge and rolled and roped borders, the poleyns en suite with the couters. The greaves well-modelled, with central ridge to the obverse and multi-lamed sabatons. C. 1830s. Minor dents and age darkening. One buckle lacking at the rear of the helmet, several straps worn. Wooden stand with circular base included. Overall height 171cm. Condition II

A RARE ENGLISH LOBSTERTAIL HELMET

A rare and highly identifiable form produced at the Greenwich Armoury. Wrought of steel, with characteristic elongated, peaked and pivoting visor and large ear guards with distinctive pierced hinges. The neck composed of four lames, the last set at a right angle to the others and likewise elongated. Pierced around the entire periphery for padding. Decorated with lineal borders, studs and rolled edges throughout. Retains its original pierced plume-holder and black finish. Beginning of the 17th century. Finish rubbed and scuffed. Overall height 30 cm. Another example of this small and select group is in the Royal Armouries Collections, Leeds, and is published in David Blackmore, Arms and Armour of the English Civil Wars, London, Royal Armouries: 1990, 16, Fig 13.
