AN IMPORTANT PERSIAN QADDARA SWORD

Lot # 301 (Sale Order: 301 of 540)      

Qajar Dynasty, of exceptional size and quality. The large hilt of characteristic form, carved of dark horn and set with pierced and gilded steel bosses, the lower retaining the original embroidered wrist strap and tassels. The massive blade made at the Court Workshop of Nasr-al-Din Shah, straight and double-edged, tapering to a slight armor-piercing tip, and wrought with pairs of snakes undulating down the length of the blade on either side. Showing traces of wootz pattern, the eyes and tongues of the snakes inlaid, together with a large cartouche containing an untranslated Persian poetic inscription. In its shagreen-covered wooden scabbard with gilded suspension band and retaining its original leather belt and tassels. Mid-19th century. Minor wear. Overall length 89 cm. Condition II

The underside retaining its original floral damask lining. Includes a folder containing personal correspondence and research on this saddle dating to the 1980s. First half of the 19th century. A scarce type produced by English armorers during the Civil Wars, rather than imported as most were. Composed of a two-piece skull with ribbed comb and applied peak and adjustable nasal with set-screw, the neck of a single, embossed plate and riveted borders throughout. Retains much original black finish. First half of the 17th century. Nasal possibly replaced. Overall height 28.6 cm. For an example of this type in the Royal Armouries, Leeds, see David Blackmore, Arms and Armour of the English Civil Wars, London, Royal Armouries: 1990, 15, Fig 10. Condition IV.
