WW2 Eagle Squadron Period RAFVR/AAF Named Pilot's Grouping-Photos-Uniforms Etc..!

Lot # 75 (Sale Order: 78 of 221)

Named to Captain John Burton Sandstead. Sandstead trained as a pilot through the Polaris Flight Academy at War Eagle Field which was located in the Mojave Desert just wes...moret of Lancaster California. The Polaris Flight Academy opened on the field's grounds on July 15, 1941 and trained pilot cadets for service in the RAF and RCAF. Sandstead finished his training and joined the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve on April 11, 1942. There were 3 active Eagle Squadrons at this time and according to information written on one of the pages of the Squadron 18 "Yearbook" there was going to be a 4th Eagle Squadron formed. Sandstead's rank while serving with the R.A.F.V.R. is listed on his RAF discharge as Sergeant along with his RAF trade designation listed as pilot. His discharge date from the RAFD is listed as September 28, 1942, the same date as the RAF Eagle Squadrons were dissolved. Sandstead was transferred to the newly formed 8th Army Air Force and was commissioned as a 2nd Lt. serving with the 347th Fighter Squadron/350th Fighter Group. There are dozens of documents in this group to include Sandstead's RAF enlistment contract, RAF temporary and official discharge papers, an 8" X 10" B&W photo signed by other cadets posing in front of the Polaris Academy at War Eagle Field, A letter of transmission stating Sandstead is being issued the RAF Service Medallion (Medallion was not with the group), a restricted transmittal ordering Sandstead to report to 8th AAF Headquarters on September 29, 1942 plus many more military and personal related papers. Sandstead's log book with entries showing he flew Spitfires and other British aircraft as a pilot of the RAF and then logs showing he flew P39' and P38's as fighter pilot with the 8th AAF. There is a photo album with many pictures of Sandstead standing beside different aircraft with one photo of him standing beside what appears to be his aircraft "Lost Hope". There are misc. rank insignia and Sandstead's Dog Tag that were found in the bottom his military trunk. Other items in this group are 3 pair of "pinks" pants, 2 pair of khaki and 2 pair of "greens" pants. There is a leather A-2 jacket with a Rough Wear Clothing Co. AAF contract tag-The leather is still supple and original waist/sleeve cuffs only show minimal wear. There are 2 pair of flight boots with one pair being British. Both flight caps have electronics and are English pilot issue. The Officer's visor hat is English made. There are 3 four pocket class A tunics-1 is khaki. One of the green tunics is English made. Both green tunics have RAF wings on the right breast. The bullion RAF wing is the more scarce smaller size. There are 2 Officer's quality "Ike" jackets. There are 2 A-4 flight coveralls, one pair of B-9 flight pants and 2 AN-S-31A summer weight flight coveralls. There is a pair of English made leather pilot's flight gloves and 5 overseas caps (US made). Also included in this amazing group is a 1943 dated B-4 inflatable life vest with both cylinders and the dye marker pack still intact. There are several shirts, ties and even socks included. Sandstead's named B-4 bag is also included. This grouping is all original and as acquired from the estate of Capt. Sandstead!
