Extremely Rare "Round Hole" Jenks Navy Carbine

Lot # 26 (Sale Order: 26 of 304)

.54 caliber smoothbore. 24.25" round barrel secured by a two flat brass screw-retained barrel bands. SN: 16/9. Browned and color casehardened finish, brass furniture, wal...morenut stock. Single shot percussion breechloading smoothbore carbine. Breech marked: Wm Jenks and in four lines: USN / RC / P / 1846. Mule-ear lock marked Wm Jenks at the tail and in three lines: NP AMES / SPRINGFIELD / MASS. Interior of breech lever marked 16/9. Weak cartouche on the counterpane appears to be the script RC of sub-inspector Rufus Chandler whose initials are on the breech of the gun as well. Carbine is in the rarely encountered "original" configuration with the round rather than the later oval loading aperture and a smooth rather than a later rifled bore. Sling ring remains in tang of triggerguard. 4,250 of these distinctive "mule ear" lock percussion carbines were produced by the NP Ames company for the US Navy from 1843-1846. Originally they had round loading apertures and smooth bores like this one. The large majority were subsequently altered to oval loading apertures and rifled bores. This is a very nice condition example of an extremely scarce "original configuration" US Navy Carbine from the Mexican War period. It is generally believed that the only carbines that escaped the modifications and upgrades were those that were issued and at sea during the process and whose ships never returned to a major US Naval Yard during the period of the upgrades. CONDITION: Very good. Barrel with a dull pewter patina and some minute traces of brown here and there, mixed with a freckled pattern of oxidation. Lock mostly a dull gray with some oxidation and some darker gray mottling that hints at the original case colors. Markings in the metal are clear and crisp. Mechanically functional with a very good smooth bore that is moderately oxidized. Stock with moderate wear, some minor surface chipping around the breech tang and numerous bumps, dings and mars. A very solid example of a very rare gun. EST: $3000 - $5000

No visible cartouche on the counterpane. Carbine is in the typically encountered "modified" configuration with the oval rather than round loading aperture and a rifled bore. Single shot breechloading percussion rifle. Mule ear percussion lock marked Wm JENKS at tail and in three lines in the center N.P. The Jenks Naval Rifle was one of the first breechloading arms acquired by the US Navy and utilized Jenks' patented action. 1,000 of the rifles were ordered in 1841 and were delivered over the next three years. This 1844 dated example would be from the last year of deliveries. A rare and difficult to obtain US Naval small arm that would be a fine addition to any serious 19th century US Naval collection. The correct bayonet for this rifle is available in this sale as well as the next lot, #29.  PROVENANCE ex-Peter Wainwright Collection. CONDITION: Fine. Retains some thinning brown on the barrel with some scattered surface oxidation and discoloration. Markings remain clear and crisp. Mechanically functional, very good bore with strong rifling and scattered light to moderate pitting. Stock with some light to moderate wear and a couple of small tight grain cracks in the wrist region that do not appear to be structural, otherwise with scattered bumps, dings and mars. Retains original fixed notch rear sight, steel rifle musket style front sight, both sling swivels and a full-length trumpet shaped brass tipped steel ramrod with  good threads on the end. A fine condition example of a cone-in-barrel altered Common Rifle that could well have seen use during the early part of the American Civil War and that still retains some nice browned finish. Arsenal Altered US Model 1822 (1816 Type II) Musket by Springfield - National Armory Brown

Lot # 33 (Sale Order: 33 of 304)

.69 caliber. 42" round barrel secured by three flat, spring retained bands. SN: Q/e 59. National Armory Brown barrel and furniture, color casehardened lock, smooth waln...moreut stock. Single shot muzzleloading percussion altered US military musket. Lock marked with a {SPREAD-WINGED EAGLE} / US forward of the cock and in three vertical lines at the tail: SPRING / FIELD / 1829. Breech plug tang dated 1829 as well. {Sunken-P} / {Eagle Head} / V proofs at left breech, top of breech with Springfield Arsenal alphanumeric serial number Q/e 59. Counterpane with two fine script cartouches, the JM of arsenal sub-inspector Justin Murphy and the EB/3 cartouche of Elizur Bates who rated this gun 3rd Class during the inspection of flintlock muskets in storage in the 1840s. An equally fine script JS in an oval is behind the triggerguard, the final inspection mark Springfield's Assistant Master Armorer at the time, John Stebbins. A crisp block SH is stamped behind the triggerguard as well, along with other arsenal sub-inspector marks in the various components of the musket. Musket is arsenal altered to percussion via the Belgian or "cone in barrel" method. Musket retains both original sling swivels, the original brass front sight on the upper band, the small socket bayonet mounting lug on the top of the barrel near the muzzle and a full-length original button head ramrod with good threads at the end. Due to the heavy service that many of these percussion altered 1816 pattern muskets saw during the early days of the American Civil War, finding an 1822 Pattern National Armory Brown gun with so much finish remaining is quite uncommon. This is a wonderful conversion musket worthy of being part of an extremely advanced collection. CONDITION: Very Fine. Retains the large majority of the original arsenal applied browned finish with a rich, lighlty oxidized chocolate color. There is some finish loss due to flaking and wear, and some areas of thinning, but in general the amount of original brown is quite impressive. The lock retains a nice smoky tobacco brown and blue mottled appearance with much of the muted case colors visible, particularly on the interior. Percussion altered lock is mechanically excellent. Fine smooth bore mostly bright with only some minor oxidation. All markings in the metal and wood remain clear and crisp. Stock has fine crisp edges and lines and a wonderful feathery texture to the wood indicative of a gun that saw little handling or use. There is some chipping out at the counterpane with a hairline grain crack that runs around the upper edge of the wrist and some surface splintering around the triggergaurd. Otherwise the wood shows only scattered bumps, dings and mars. An extremely sharp and attractive musket. EST: $1500 - $2500

Reconverted US Model 1840 Flintlock Musket by D. Nippes

Lot # 35 (Sale Order: 35 of 304)

.69 caliber. 42" round barrel secured by three flat, spring-retained barrel bands. SN: NSN. Bright finish, iron furniture, walnut stock. Single shot, smoothbore, muzzlel...moreoading flintlock musket. Lock marked in two horizontal lines below the pan, D. NIPPES / U.S. and in four vertical lines at the tail: MILL / CREEK / PA / 1846. Lock reconverted to flint. Breech plug tang dated 1844 and left breech with US / JH inspection marks and with a raised P in depressed starburst proof. Counterpane with two script cartouches, the first is only the outline with no legible letters and second is the WAT of accepting Ordnance Officer William Anderson Thornton. U.S. on buttplate tang. Retains original brass blade front sight, both sling swivels and the steel trumpet head ramrod that is full-length with threads on the end. The US Model 1840 Musket was the last of the US flintlock infantry long arms and was rather quickly superseded by the Model 1842. The guns were only produced by three makers, Springfield Arsenal who produced 30,421 between 1840 and 1844, Lemuel Pomeroy who produced 7,000 between 1840 and 1846 and Daniel Nippes who produced 5,100 between 1843 and 1847. The large majority of the Model 1840 muskets were never issued for use, as they were being delivered well into the percussion era when they had already been made obsolete by the Model 1842. As a result many sat in storage at the various arsenals until they were altered to percussion, having never seen use as flintlocks. In the case of Nippes's contract guns some 2,000 were altered to the Maynard tape priming system, many before they even left Nippes' factory as flintlocks. Those alterations alone leave only 3,100 flintlock Model 1840 muskets from that contract, with the large majority of them later being altered to percussion by the more conventional US arsenal cone in barrel system. This is a nicely done reconversion to flint of one of those Nippes contract musket, allowing the collector to add a "flint" 1840 to their collection without having to spend a considerable amount of money. CONDITION: Good to very good. Metal cleaned to bright with some scattered light pitting, particularly in the breech area. Markings in metal mostly clear, weaker in wood. Lock mechanically functional but the frizzen spring is quite weak. Smooth bore is very good, with moderate oxidation and some pitting. Stock with moderate wear, showing scattered bumps, dings and mars. EST: $1200 - $1800
