Indian Captured Model 1873 First Model Trapdoor Carbine

Lot # 359 (Sale Order: 355 of 698)

.45-70 caliber, 22" round barrel with no proofs, S/N 39149. Breechblock with early markings, model 1873 eagle with crossed arrows. Early style hammer with course checkering,  correct early style carbine rear barrel sight missing the slide. Early style buttplate with early stacking swivel.  Early long wrist carbine buttstock.  This carbine is pictured in Custer Battle Guns by John S. Dumont (1977 : 90) and pictured and described on page 93.   It is listed as Springfield carbine model 1873, serial number 39149.  Broken wrist with copper wire, showing Indian use and lightly painted dark green.

Provenance: John Dumont

Condition: Entire carbine is a very even untouched dark patina. With old repairs to the wrist using screws and nails. On the left side of the buttstock has carved initials that have been there forever.  The condition is quoted in John Du Mont's book on page 90. The 73 Springfield #39149 has a good provenance and beyond that opens up other interesting aspects for the collector in that the entire carbine, including all metal and wood parts, was painted a dark green.  Subsequent wear has removed about 50% of this paint.  This is a genuine Indian-used carbine documented well in this book.  For the collector who is looking for the real and best Indian used carbine.
