Colt Single Action Artillery Revolver 

Lot # 405 (Sale Order: 401 of 698)      

.45 caliber, 5.5" round barrel length, S/N 47596 (not matching which is common with artillery revolvers). Single-line Colt Hartford address on top of the barrel.  Patent dates in three lines on the left side of the frame.  "US" marked on the left side of the frame.  Cartouche marked on the right grip and "RAC" marked on the bottom of the grips.  Henry Nettle marked barrel, cylinder, back strap and trigger guard.  "DFC" marked frame.  Blue barrel, ejector, cylinder, back strap and trigger.  Case color frame with walnut grips. 

Condition: Retains a lot of the blue finish on the barrel with wear to the left side exposing gray and muzzle wear.  Cylinder shows wear from rotation and to the high edges but retains a strong amount of blue finish.  The frame is very good displaying a vibrant case color throughout.  The grips are good with nicks and dings consistent with age and use.  Bore is very good.  Mechanically very good.

Colt Model 1877 "Lightening" Revolver 

Lot # 406 (Sale Order: 402 of 698)      

.38 caliber, 4.5" barrel length, S/N 124849 (visible numbers all matching).  Two-line address on top of the barrel.  Left side of barrel marked Colt D.A. 38.  Left side of frame below the cylinder has the patent date and rampant Colt logo.  Blue barrel, ejector, cylinder, hammer, trigger, trigger guard and back strap.  Case colored frame with black rubber checkered grips with rampant Colt logo. 

Condition: The barrel and ejector retain some blue that is blending to a patina.  The trigger and trigger guard retain some of the blue also blending to a patina.  The back of the hammer retains most of the blue. The cylinder retains some of the blue blending to a patina. Some of the case coloring remains behind the cylinder with the remaining  blending with a patina. The markings are good.  The grips are good with minimal wear.  Mechanically good.  Bore is very good.

Factory Engraved Colt Single Action Army Revolver 

Lot # 407 (Sale Order: 403 of 698)      

.44-40 caliber, 5.5" round barrel length, S/N 153173 . Single-line Colt Hartford address on top of the barrel.  Left side of the barrel marked "Colt Frontier Six Shooter."  Left side of the frame marked in two lines with the patent date next to rampant Colt logo.  Factory engraving on the barrel, ejector, frame, cylinder and back strap.  Nickel finish with carved bull head ivory grips.  This revolver was shipped on January 8, 1894, to Kirk & Patrick Hardware.  Comes with factory letter. 

Condition: Retains a lot of the re-nickel finish with wear and flaking on the barrel, cylinder, frame and back strap.  Some area of fine salt and peppering pitting on the frame and cylinder blending to a patina.  The grips are good with a pleasing yellow patina that show age with nicks and dings.  Bore is good.  Mechanically very good.

Colt Single Action Army Revolver 

Lot # 408 (Sale Order: 404 of 698)      

.45 caliber, 7.5" round barrel length, S/N 91353 (ca. 1883). Single-line Colt Hartford address on top of the barrel.  Left side of frame is marked in three lines with patent dates.  The frame, cylinder, barrel and top of back strap have New York-style engraving.  Nickel finish with ivory grips.  Comes with factory letter.  This gun was one of fifty shipped to Hartley & Graham in New York City on May 4, 1883. 

Condition: Retains most of the re-nickeled finish throughout.  The barrel address is fading.  The grips are good and show age with a yellowing patina.  The bore is very good.  Mechanically very good.

Factory Engraved Colt DA Model 1894 

Lot # 409 (Sale Order: 405 of 698)      

.38 caliber, 4.5" barrel length, S/N 71841. Scroll factory engraved nickel-plated frame, barrel, trigger guard and backstrap. Gold-plated factory engraved fluted cylinder. Three-line barrel address on top of the barrel and marked "Colt DA .38" on left side of barrel. Blued hammer and trigger. Pearl grips. 

Condition: The barrel, frame, trigger guard and backstrap retain much of the nickel-plated finish with some flaking. On the bottom side of the barrel at the muzzle shows flaking. The cylinder retains some of the gold plating in the flutes and engraved patterns. The trigger and the hammer retain some of the blue finish. Pearl grips are good with a yellowing patina. The bore has strong rifling with some pitting in the grooves. Can clean to better. Markings are good. Traces of nickel finish, with some traces of gold on the cylinder and in the flutes. Factory letter details this revolver as Nickel and Gold plated model 1894 Double action revolver. The factory letter does not mention engraving, however in handling these over the last 45 years, this is a factory error.  It is definitely factory engraved. This revolver has never been refinished or altered.   It is in untouched condition.

Colt Model 1860 Civilian Percussion Revolver With Fluted Cylinder 

Lot # 410 (Sale Order: 406 of 698)      

.44 caliber, 8" round barrel length, S/N 5000. Single-line New York barrel address.  Left side of frame marked "Colts Patent."  Six-shot fluted cylinder that is marked "Patented - Sept. 10th 1850."  Silver-plated barrel, loading lever, frame, hammer, cylinder and back strap.  Silver-plated brass trigger guard.  Ivory grips. 

Condition: Retains most of the silver plating with some tarnishing.  The loading lever and frame have a couple areas of salt and pepper pitting.  The back strap has a darkening patina and the brass trigger guard has a mellow patina.  The markings are sharp and crisp.  The grips have a pleasing yellow patina.  Bore is dark and pitted.  Mechanically good.

Condition: Retains most of the blue finish on the barrel with wear to the high edges and muzzle.  The silver-plated brass frame has oxidized black.  The grips are very good with minimal wear.  Mechanically very good.  The bore is very good.

Condition: Barrel and cylinder retain most of the original blue with some light flaking on the cylinder. Frame retains most of the silver plate just lightly tarnished. Rosewood grips are excellent. Silver and blue are a rare combination, and seldom seen.

Condition: This revolver is in outstanding condition. Revolver retains most of the original nickel finish. Ivory grips are excellent. 5" barrels Model 2 Army's are very rare and even more so when factory engraved.

Extremely Rare Dual Panel-Scene Engraved S&W Model One, 1st Issue 5th Type

.22 Short RF caliber, 3.18” barrel, S/N 5812. Blued barrel with silver-plated brass frame. Fully engraved with panel scene of dogs hunting on the left side, and on the right side, a single dog hunting in a field. This is the only known dual panel-scene engraved 1st Model 1st Issue and is pictured in Parsons, John E. Smith & Wesson Revolvers: The Pioneer Single Action Models. New York: Morrow, 1957: page 8. 

Condition: Barrel is very sharp and crisp with all of the blue finish turned plum. Cylinder matches the barrel with an even plum look. Frame is sharp and crisp with traces of the original silver finish. Original mellowed ivory grips are very good.

Exhibition Factory Engraved .32 Single Action, aka Model 1-1/2 Center Fire 

Lot # 417 (Sale Order: 413 of 698)      

.32 S&W caliber, 3.5" barrel, S/N 3761. Blued top latch, blued trigger. Case colored hammer. Factory engraved by Gustave Young in the late 1870s, with much coverage on the barrel, frame, cylinder and the backstrap and original pearl grips. Comes with a factory letter. 

Condition: Retaining most of the original nickel, blue and case colored finish. Pearl grips are excellent. The engraving and the extra polished finish is that of a revolver used for exhibition. This is truly an outstanding factory engraved .32 single action Model 1-1/2.

Condition: This is a very sharp and crisp revolver. The gun retains all the frame-dated 1963 factory refinished silver-plating that has oxidized nicely. The grips are in excellent condition and retain the original varnished "piano" finish. The engraving is sharp and crisp. Overall condition is superb.

Condition: This revolver is very close to being mint. There is only are some minute, very light pitting in the flutes of the cylinder and a little on the underneath of the strap above the cylinder. Overall it retains most of the original nickel finish. The original piano-finish rosewood grips are mint.

Cased Factory Engraved S&W Model 2 Old Model Revolver

.32 RF Long caliber, 6" octagonal barrel, S/N 73769. Full nickel plate except case-color hammer. Engraved in Nimschke, New York open-vine-style with no stippled background. Original pearl grips. Mahogany partitioned case with red cloth lining. A full box of 32 caliber long cartridges by UMC Co., pink label with green plaid and red paper to seal the box. 

Provenance: Ex Bobby Smith Collection

Condition: This revolver is sharp and crisp retaining all of the original nickel finish. No wear, just lightly dulled, and has never been cleaned or touched. Case is excellent. Pearl grips are excellent, with one small chip that is not noticeable missing on the left grip at the butt. An outstanding set.

S&W Model 2 Army, aka Model 2 Old Model Revolver

.32 RF Long caliber, rare 5" octagonal barrel length, S/N 3237. Markings on top of the barrel Smith & Wesson Springfield, Mass. Original blue finish on barrel, frame, cylinder and back strap.  Piano-finish rosewood grips with a square butt profile. Case-colored cylinder-extractor rod and hammer. 

Condition: The rosewood grips are in excellent condition with only minor nicks and dings and retaining the original varnish. The barrel and frame have very light oxidation that blends well with the blue finish. The cylinder has some light oxidation as well.  Most all of the original blue remains. Traces of case color on the cylinder pin and hammer with a gunmetal grey patina on these parts. The bore is in excellent condition. Overall condition is excellent. A rare 5” full-blue # 2 Army.

Cased S&W Model 2 Army Nimschke-New York Engraved, aka Model 2 Old Model Revolver

.32 RF Long caliber, 6" octagonal barrel, S/N 72997. Fully engraved in Nimschke New York vine-style with no stippled background. Full silver plate with gold-washed cylinder, case-colored hammer and pearl grips. Mahogany partitioned case, maroon cloth lined. Cartridge block has cartridges. 

Condition: Revolver retains almost all of the original silver-plated finish, which has nicely tarnished with a blue-grey appearance. The original gold-wash has faded to only traces. Revolver has a sharp and crisp look. Pearl grips are excellent. Case has been refinished, the lining appears to be the original with wear from where the revolver has been laying. Overall a very excellent and rare Smith & Wesson revolver, engraved and silver-plated.

Cased Nimschke-New York Engraved Smith & Wesson Mod 3 American 2nd Model Single Action Revolver

.44 S&W American caliber, 8" round barrel, S/N 31365 E. Nimschke-New York-style engraving, shipped to M.W Robinson in New York City. Engraved frame, back strap, butt with border around the serial number, engraved cylinder and barrel. Finish in nickel plating, barrel latch blued, original walnut grips. M.W. Robinson partition case is made of mahogany, lined in red baize cloth. Full box of UMC Cartridge Co .44 S&W caliber American cartridges. 

Condition: Revolver is very sharp and crisp retaining most of the nickel finish with some areas of thinning on the sides of barrel. Cylinder retains most of the nickel just lightly dulling. Frame loses some of the nickel finish on the sides.  Grips are excellent. Case is excellent, the inside lining is in excellent condition showing some staining where the revolver has been lying. This is a very rare original engraved S&W American in an even more rare case.

Smith & Wesson Model No. 2 Old Model Revolver

.32 RF caliber, 5” octagonal barrel, S/N 23865. Blued finish, rosewood grips. Case hardened hammer. 

Condition: This gun is in overall fine condition showing the majority of its original blue finish. The bore is fine, the action crisp and the markings are sharp. The grips are also excellent with the majority of their original varnish remaining.  Hammer and and ejector tube retain all of the original bright case colors.  This revolver is very rare in a 5" barrel length and is in almost mint condition with just the sligest streak through the cylinder stops.

.44-40 caliber, 4.75" barrel, S/N 147712. With matching serial numbers throughout. Roll stamped Six Shooter on the left of the barrel. With two-line Hartford address stamped on top, and two-line patent markings on the frame with rampant Colt logo. With worn hard rubber grips. 

Condition: The gun has a flat gunmetal patina, with speckling throughout. The hammer retains some original case coloring. The frame has a few scratches. The grips are heavily worn. The bore and mechanics are very good.

Chicago Protector in Box

.32 extra short RF caliber, 1.75” barrel, S/N 7667. Nickel finish with checkered black hard rubber grips. In its original box with cleaning tools. The underside of the box A.G. Alford, Baltimore label. 

Condition: The box is in very good condition, with edge wear. The pistol has a broken firing pin, but all else is in very good condition.

Archive of West Pointer and 7th Cavalryman Col. John M. Johnson,  

Lot # 427 (Sale Order: 423 of 698)      

Formerly the property of John Mitchell Johnson (1843-1913), Civil War veteran, West Point Class of 1867 and an officer of the 7th Cavalry under Gen. Custer.  Includes a Model 1860 cavalry officer's saber, 34.5" blade with fullers, etched with military and floral motifs, maker's mark and pattern obscured by old surface oxidation.  Hilt has brass three-branch guard and pommel embossed with an eagle and laurel leaves. Grip wrapped in shagreen and brass twist wire.  Complete with iron scabbard and brass mounted leather sword hanger.  A Model 1860 Field and Staff officer's sword, 30.25" etched blade named to "Col. J. M. Johnson." M. C. Lilly maker's mark on the ricasso.  Hilt of gilt-finished brass with eagle embossed clamshells and "D" guard, leather and wire wrapped grip.  Nickel-plated scabbard has brass mountings.  Insignia includes a pair of gold bullion epaulets with unit number "7" on yellow wool discs and 3" fringe, a pair of cavalry 1st Lieutenant's gold bullion and yellow wool shoulder straps and a similar pair for a staff officer on dark blue, all housed in a black japanned tin case.  Lot further includes 30" x 23.25" framed US Military Academy diploma named to Johnson, frame of dark wood. Also included is a leather bound gold embossed covered photo album of the faculty, cadets and views of the 1867 West Point class containing over 125 pages; most of the cadet portraits are signed.  Of special note is a cabinet card photograph of Edward G. Mathey, 7th Cavalry and who, as the commander of the regiment's pack train, survived the hilltop fight at the Battle of Little Big Horn, signed by Mathey on the reverse.  Several other minor documents and a contemporary book Custer in Photographs are also included.

John M. Johnson served in the 20th Iowa during the Civil War.  He was appointed to West Point from the field in 1863, graduating in 1867.  He fought with the 7th Cavalry under Sully and Custer in the 1868 and 69 campaigns and was present at the Battle of Washita.  He resigned from the army in 1871 and held several elected offices and entered the law profession.  In 1899 -1900 he was an aide-de-camp to Gen. Thomas and Inspector General of the Colorado National Guard.    

Condition: Fair to good. The M1860 saber shows age and service wear. The M1860 sword is very well preserved but the reverse clamshell button is missing. The insignia and case are in excellent condition.  The diploma has some wrinkles and minor edge wear on the frame. The album cover is cracked on the spine with tape repairs and scoffed on the cover; the contents remain in very good shape.

Colt 4-1/2" Octagon Barrel Revolver, Engraved To G.K.S.

.38 rimfire caliber, 4.5" octagonal barrel, S/N 4419. With matching numbers throughout. Top flat of barrel marked Address Col Saml Colt New-York U.S. America. The loading lever cutout is plugged. Five-shot cylinder with stagecoach scene. Blue finish, with case hardened frame and brass trigger guard and backstrap. The underside of the butt is engraved G.K.S. from J.S.W. April 1st 1874. Walnut grips. 

Condition: Much of the original blue finish remains on the barrel and cylinder, with areas of fading. The frame displays very good case colors. The grips and bore are in very good condition.

Single-line Colt Hartford address on top of barrel.  Left side of frame marked in two lines with patent dates.  Trigger guard marked ".44 Cal."  Nickel finish with varnished walnut grips.  This is 1 of 6 guns that were in a shipment to Winchester Repeating Arms Co. on May 7, 1880. Comes with factory letter. 

Condition: Very sharp and crisp single action that is blending from a gray to brown patina throughout the barrel, ejector, frame, cylinder, back strap and trigger guard.  Cylinder shows some wear from rotating and a very fine salt and pepper pitting in the flutes.  The frame, hammer, back strap and trigger guard all have a very fine salt and pepper pitting.  All markings are sharp and crisp.  The grips are very good with minimal nicks and dings.  Bore is very good plus.  Mechanically very good.
