Accompanying this lot is a factory letter from W.S. Peace which gives a history of this unique sporting rifle based on the serial number. Serial number CL134 is noted in the Sharp's record as serial number 150134 and was done so based on the company wanting to designate a departure from percussion and percussion conversions using Roman numerals CL to represent 150 thousand. This sporting rifle was sold on June 22, 1870, to A.A. Kellogg of New Haven, Ct. as a sporting octagonal rifle. As stated in this letter this is one of the scarcest, being around 100 rifles produced.

All of the screw heads with extra polished blue. Frame retains all of the case colored finish. Lot # 478 (Sale Order: 474 of 698)
.44 caliber, 24" octagonal barrel, S/N 20342. Also with all matching numbers. The top panels of the frame feature scroll and dot engravings, along with the serial number. The left side of the frame is marked Brown Mfg. Co. Newburyport Mass and Ballard's Patent Nov. 5, 1861. Both sides of the frame feature detailed vine and dot engravings, with the left side having an engraved hunting dog in a circle with an ivy border. The right side features blank scroll in the middle of the engravings, suggesting something was to be added later. With fancy grain walnut checkered stock and forearm. With rear tang peep sight and sling swivels on the underside of the barrel and stock. The barrel also has a three leaf folding rear sight. The crescent buttplate, lever and fore end each feature areas of the same vine and dot engravings that appear throughout the rifle.
Both of these rifles feature a unique grip shell extractor on their frames, found only on early production Brown rifles. Less than fifty of these are known to exist. Engraved pre Marlin-Ballards are very rare, and this likely the only consecutive serial numbered matching pair known to exist.
