Marlin Model 1897 First Model Deluxe Rifle with Scope 

Lot # 530 (Sale Order: 526 of 698)      

.22 caliber, 28" octagonal barrel, S/N 219526. With Marlin Firearms Co., New Haven and patent dates marked on the barrel. The magazine tube is of the half-length. The barrel features swirl engravings behind the folding leaf sights at the breech. The top of the is engraved Marlin Safety, and is surrounded by swirl engravings. The frame is case hardened and features an engraved bull and cow elk in an oval, surrounded by intricate scroll engravings. The right side features an engraved bull elk in an oval, surrounded by scroll engravings. The entire frame is bordered with miniature engraved hearts and swirl patterns. The upper tang features an engraved border, and a swirl engraving behind the Lyman peep sight. There is another scroll engraving behind the serial number on the underside of the frame. The pistol grip stock and forearm are made of fancy 3x grain wood, and feature intricate checkering patterns. The lever and fore end cap are nickel plated, with the cap having scroll engravings. The Swiss style buttplate is nickel-plated brass, and features intricate scroll engravings at the top and on the butt. The rifle includes a Malcolm 10x telescopic sight, serial number 6277 over 4. Mounts are included, but it is unclear if these are the correct ones for this rifle/scope combination. This is very rare rifle to feature .22 short caliber and a Swiss buttplate, and was custom ordered. 

Condition: Barrel and magazine tube retains most of the bright original blue finish.  Frame retains most of the original original case colors just very lightly faded. Lever, buttplate and nose cap retains all of the original nickel finish.  Stock is excellent retaining most of the original varnish finish.  Forearm has darken close to the frame. Bore is excellent.  Scope optics are clear and excellent.

Marlin Model 1897 Lever Action Rifle With Threaded Barrel  

Lot # 531 (Sale Order: 527 of 698)      

.22 rimfire caliber, 24" round barrel, S/N 252656. Barrel with Marlin, New Haven and patent date markings. The muzzle is threaded for a Maxim suppressor and cap. The rounded top of the frame is marked Marlin Safety, with the upper tang marked Model 1897. Walnut stock and forearm, with checkered Marlin hard rubber buttplate. 

Condition: The barrel and magazine tube retain all of their original blue finish and are in excellent condition. The hammer, frame and lever have almost all of their case coloring remaining and are in very good condition. The forearm and stock have one or two slight nicks or dings, but are in very good condition. The bore and mechanics are excellent.

**Winchester Model 1886 Take Down Deluxe Rifle

.45-90 W.C.F. caliber, 26" octagon barrel, S/N 109526. With Winchester address and caliber markings on the barrel. Marked Model 1886 on the upper tang. With fancy grain checkered pistol grip walnut stock and forearm. With double set triggers, Winchester logo hard rubber pistol grip cap and crescent buttplate. Included with the rifle is a letter from the Cody Firearms Records Office.   Blued  finish Winchester 86 Deluxe rifles are very scarce in this condition. With factory letter. 

Condition: The barrel and magazine tube have all of the original blue finish remaining. The frame has almost all of its original blue finish, with some very light streaks on either side. The lever and buttplate have case colors present, with some fading. The stock and forearm retain all  of the original high varnished finish with some slight nicks and dings, but are in good to very good condition The bore is excellent.

Condition: The barrel has almost all of its original blue finish remaining, with the exception of a few lightly faded splotches on the underside. Condition: All parts retain nearly all of the original blue finish. The fancy grain checkered stock and forearm are in very good to excellent condition. The bore is excellent.

Condition: The original blue finish is entirely present on the barrel. The frame displays some fading to the underside and edges, along with the top of the bolt. Some strong case coloring remains on the lever. The stock and forearm have some nicks and dings but are in good condition. The bore is in very good to excellent condition.

**Winchester Model 1886 Lever Action Carbine 

Lot # 536 (Sale Order: 532 of 698)      

.45-90 W.C.F. caliber, 22" round barrel, S/N 127890. Barrel marked with Winchester company name and address, with the caliber forward of the breech. No barrel proofs, which did not begin until 1904.  The model is marked on the upper tang, with the serial number and patent dates on the lower. With a saddle ring on the left side of the frame. Fancy grain walnut stock and forearm. The carbine is accompanied by a letter from the Cody Firearms Records Office attesting to the configuration. With factory letter. 

Condition: The barrel and magazine tube have almost all of their original finish with some wear to the high lines, very light.  The frame has almost all of the original blue finish remaining. The hammer and lever display vibrant case coloring, in very good to excellent condition. The fancy grain stock and forearm are in very good condition. The bore is excellent. Very rare in carbine with blued frame and .45-90 caliber, m ade in 1903.

**Winchester Model 1885 High Wall Rifle 

Lot # 537 (Sale Order: 533 of 698)      

.30 U.S. caliber, 30" barrel, S/N 84764. The round #3 barrel is marked with the Winchester name and address, and caliber. Patent dates and the serial number are marked on the lower tang. Walnut buttstock with crescent buttplate with compartment (empty). Forearm with tapered and ebonized fore end tip. With factory letter. 

Condition: The blue finish is in excellent condition on the barrel and frame, with only the slightest amount of fading to the lever. All metal has been refinished. This is a very olf refinish job, and was expertly done. The stock and forearm have some slight nicks, but are in good to very god overall condition. A small sliver of wood is missing on the upper tang. The bore is excellent.

Condition: The barrel has practically all of the blue finish remaining and is in excellent condition. The frame, lever and magazine all have a strong blue finish, with some very light scratches to the frame. The magazine has normal wear from light use. The stock and forearm are in very good condition. The bore is in excellent condition.

Morocco Leather Cased Set of Ballard Long Range Sights

A set of Ballard long-range sights, housed in a black leather case bearing the Ballard name and decorative bands in gold leaf. The interior is lined with fitted merlot velvet compartments for the tang sight base and screws, the long-range peep sight, an extra peep disk, four front sight disks, wind gauge front sight with spirit level and a wind gauge sight base. 

A nearly identical cased set can be found on page 289 of John T. Dutcher's book, Ballard: The Great American Single Shot Rifle.  

Condition: All parts have all or nearly all of their original blue finish remaining. The leather case shows some very minor wear, but is in very good overall condition. This is an excellent example of a Ballard long-range sight set.

.38/55 caliber, 30" round Rigby barrel, S/N 18022. With all matching serial numbers throughout. Rigby barrel with engraved muzzle and relief raised ribs, each with scroll engravings with the center engraved Ballard in a scroll. The left of the frame is marked with Marlin, New Haven and Ballard's patent dates. The right side of the frame features an engraved bear in a circle, with the left side having an engraved buck in a circle. Both engraved creatures are surrounded by scroll engravings, with engraved heart patterns in the border. The fancy grain walnut pistol grip stock features a high comb with a raised cheekpiece. It also features deluxe checkering, a horn insert in the underside of the pistol grip and a brass Swiss style buttplate. The forearm also features deluxe checkering, and has a tapered horn fore end. The barrel and frame feature a mounted full length 34.5" telescopic scope, with a rear tang Vernier peep sight. 

Condition: The barrel has all of its original blue finish remaining, The hammer, breechblock, lever and frame all have strong case coloring. The stock and forearm have one or two handling marks, but are in very good to excellent overall condition. The buttplate may have been plated at one point, but is showing all brass. The bore and mechanics are excellent.

.38/55 caliber, 28" round Rigby barrel, S/N 22549. With all matching serial numbers throughout. Rigby barrel with engraved muzzle and relief raised ribs, each with scroll engravings with the center engraved Ballard in a scroll. The top flat of the frame features scroll engravings with heart motif engravings in the border. The left of the frame is marked with Marlin, New Haven and Ballard's patent dates. The right side of the frame features an engraved buck, with the left side having an engraved bear. Each appear in an oval surrounded by scroll engravings, surrounded by engraved heart patterns in the border. The fancy grain walnut pistol grip stock features a raised cheekpiece. It also features deluxe checkering, a horn insert in the underside of the pistol grip and a nickel-plated Swiss-style buttplate. The forearm also features deluxe checkering, and has a tapered horn fore end. With globe front sight and rear Vernier tang peep sight. 

Condition: The original blue finish on the barrel is entirely present. The hammer, breechblock and frame retain strong case coloring, with the lever having a good blue finish. The stock and forearm are in very good to excellent condition. The nickel plating on the buttplate is lightly worn on the end nubs to reveal the brass underneath. The bore and mechanics are excellent. This is a beautifully engraved single shot rifle, in very good to excellent overall condition.

Marlin-Ballard 1 1/2 Hunters Rifle

.40/63 caliber, 28" round barrel, S/N 2958. With all matching serial numbers throughout. Blue finished barrel with straight blade German silver front sight, adjustable raised buckhorn rear sight and marked with the caliber at the breech. Left of frame marked J.M. Marlin New Haven Conn. U.S.A. Ballard's Patent Nov. 5 1861. Walnut stock with tapered forearm and crescent buttplate. 

Condition: All of the original blue finish remains on the barrel. The frame, breechblock, hammer, lever and buttplate retain almost all of their case coloring, and display strong colors. The stock has a very minor age crack where it meets the frame on the left side. Stock and forearm in otherwise very good condition. The bore and mechanics are excellent. This rifle is like new, and has most likely never been fired.

Brown Deluxe Sporting Rifle With Grip Extractor 

Lot # 546 (Sale Order: 542 of 698)      

.44-60 Sharps centerfire caliber, 30" octagonal barrel, S/N 20331. With all matching serial numbers throughout. The top of the barrel is marked with the serial number. The top of the frame is also marked with the serial number, with the left side of the frame marked Brown Mfg. Co. Newburyport Mass and Ballard's Patent Nov. 5, 1861. With folding beech combination front sight, adjustable dovetail rear sight and folding upper tang peep sight. Deluxe walnut stock and forearm, with crescent buttplate and sling swivels on the underside of the butt and the barrel.

The frame features Brown's unique grip shell extractor, found in early production rifles. Less than fifty of these are known to exist. According to John Dutcher, this is the only known pre-Marlin-Ballard in a centerfire cartridge. 

Condition: The barrel has nearly all of its original blue finish remaining, with one or two small insignificant handling dings. The frame, breechblock, hammer and lever have a mostly even gunmetal patina, with some areas of case coloring showing through. The buttplate has an even gunmetal patina, with some light staining. The stock and forearm have some light handling marks, but are in good condition. The bore and mechanics are excellent.

Ballard Sporting Rifle by Ball and Williams 

Lot # 547 (Sale Order: 543 of 698)      

.38 rimfire caliber, 24 1/8" octagonal barrel, S/N 316. With matching serial numbers on all parts. Center flat of barrel marked Ball & Williams Worcester Mass, with the right side marked Ballards Patent Nov. 5 1861 and the left side marked Merwin & Bray Agt's New York. The barrel features a raised blade front sight and an adjustable split dovetail rear sight. The frame, breechblock, lever and crescent buttplate are all brass, and were once silver plated. With varnished walnut stock and forearm with ejector.

This exact rifle is pictured on page 19 of John T. Dutcher's book Ballard: The Great American Single Shot Rifle.  

Condition: The barrel features nearly all of its original blue finish, with some very minor scuffs and light fading to the edges. Traces of silver plating remain on the underside of the brass frame, with more traces visible on the buttplate. The hammer has some case coloring remaining in the protected areas. The stock and forearm have very minor nicks and dings and are in very good condition. The bore and mechanics are excellent.

Condition: The barrel is in excellent condition, with almost all of its original blue finish, with only one very minor scuff on the left side near the breech. The frame, hammer and breechblock retain nearly all of their original case colors, with some light fading to the lever and buttplate. Marlin-Ballard 4 1/2 A-1 Mid Range Target Rifle

.40-65 caliber, 30" round-to-octagonal barrel, S/N 8340. With all matching serial numbers throughout. Blue finished barrel, with casehardened frame, hammer, breechblock, lever and checkered trigger. The left side of the frame is marked J.M. Marlin New-Haven Conn. U.S.A. / Ballard's Patent Nov. 5 1861. Both sides of the frame feature beautifully detailed scroll and dot engravings. Engraved on the left side within a scroll is Ballard A-1, and on the right side, Mid Range. The top of the frame at the breech also features detailed engravings. With Vernier tang rear sight and wind gauge spirit level front sight. The pistol grip stock and forearm feature fancy grain walnut with Ballard style checkering. the forearm has a tapered horn fore end tip. The underside of the pistol grip features a horn insert. The stock has a finely checkered Ballard buttplate.

This exact rifle is pictured and described on page 150 of John T. Dutcher's book Ballard: The Great American Single Shot Rifle.  

Condition: The barrel features almost all of its original blue finish, in excellent condition. The case coloring is mostly excellent throughout, with only some light fading on the right side. The stock and forearm are beautifully checkered and are in excellent condition. The bore and mechanics are excellent. An excellent example of a fine Ballard single shot target rifle.

Very Early Marlin-Ballard No. 2 Sporting Rifle

.32 centerfire caliber, 26" octagonal barrel, S/N 3795. With all matching serial numbers throughout. Left side of frame marked J.M. Marlin New Haven Conn. U.S.A. Patented Feb. 9, 1875 Ballard's Patent Nov. 5, 1861. With Beech combination front sight, Rocky Mountain rear sight and a folding tang sight. Walnut stock and forearm, with horn tip. Blue finish barrel with case colored frame. 

Condition: Nearly all of the original blue finish remains on the barrel. The frame has very strong case colors, and is in very good condition. The stock and forearm have one or two handling marks, but are in very good overall condition. The bore is in very good to excellent condition.

**Cased Engraved Daniel Fraser Take Down Sporting Rifle 

Lot # 552 (Sale Order: 548 of 698)      

.22 S. H-P caliber, 24" round barrel. Hand-engraved address on the top of the barrel, Dan L Fraser& Co, Gun and Rifle Manufacture, 4 Leith St Edinburgh.  Blue finish with engraved barrel, action, bolt and trigger guard.  Highly polish extractor and blued bolt.  Blued trigger guard.  Rear barrel sight with folding leaves, front sight mounted on a ramp.  Cocking piece has a dovetailed rear sight that folds down.  Take down lever mounted on the bottom of the trigger guard.  Eyes for sling swivels mounted on the barrel and one on the bottom of the stock near the toe.  Stock of highly figured European walnut stock.  Finely checkered pistol grip with cap and fore end with nicely carved horn tip and checkered horn buttplate. Cased in a fine wood case covered in leather, with red maroon lining.  Cleaning rod and handle, oiler. Nice original green label with gold markings. 

Condition: This rifle is outstanding example of an early Daniel Fraser take down rifle. Retaining all of the bright original blue finish.  Engraving is exquisite.  Stock is excellent plus with some minute scratches.  Case  on the outside is honey colored.  Some very minor scuffs in leather.

**Rare 1873 Winchester Pistol Grip Rifle 

Lot # 553 (Sale Order: 549 of 698)      

.32-20 caliber, octagonal barrel with full magazine, S/N 540107. Plain pistol grip. Received in the warehouse Dec. 6, 1899; shipped Dec. 7, 1899 to order #71407. One of only 2 known that factory letters indicate with plain pistol grip. Formerly in the collection of James D. Gordon, author of "Winchester's New Model of 1873, A Tribute." Listed as item #229 in the auction catalog sale of the Gordon Collection by Little John's Auction Service. (Catalog in photo not included with this lot.) 

Condition: This rifle remains in very good condition with 50% blue drifting to patina on the barrel and magazine tube. The frame shows traces of blue within patina with some scratching. The wood is good with minor defects and normal aging. The original Winchester pistol grip cap is retained. Period eyelets for hook-type sling added. Good markings and fairly sharp edges. A rare '73 with notable provenance.

**Rare Special Order 1873 Winchester Rifle 

Lot # 554 (Sale Order: 550 of 698)      

.38-40 caliber, half-round/half-octagonal barrel, S/N 552977. Plain pistol grip stock, half magazine, shotgun butt. Received in the warehouse Sept. 28, 1900 and shipped Sept. 28, 1900 to order #72098 with factory letter confirming all features. This 1873 Winchester rifle and the following 1873 Winchester rifle (S/N 540107) are the only two confirmed by factory records being ordered with smooth pistol gripped stocks. 

Condition: This Winchester remains in original very good + condition with 50%-70% original blue drifting to a natural patina with just minor use and normal aging. The edges are sharp with good markings. The wood is also very good + with minor marks and slight imperfections. Original pistol grip cap is retained.  A very significant variation chronicled by James Gordon in his book Winchester's New Model of 1873, A Tribute".
