Cased Wooden Model of the Battleship Bismarck Handcrafted by a German POW

Lot # 570 (Sale Order: 566 of 698)

A detailed wooden model, approximately 17.5" in length, housed in a 20.75" x 6.5" x 4.5" pine and glass case. A hand-lettered paper on wood label identifies the vessel as "Schlachtschiff - Bismarck / ges. am 27.5.41."  The top of the case is adorned with a carved, spread-wing Nazi eagle and swastika, the reverse dated "1942" in pencil.  On the reverse is painted "Gravenhurst Camp / Medicine Hat / Alra."  Model superstructure details include gun turrets, signal masts, flags and life boats.  Constructed of various shades of scrap wood, string and paper using simple tools by an unidentified German POW held at a camp in Canada.  Research shows that the prisoners at this camp, known as 132, made a specialty of manufacturing ship models. Several other examples with "Camp 132" provenance are in the collections of Canadian museums.  This particular model came into the possession of the camp dentist and was passed down to his son, later passing through the hands of several collectors.  The model is accompanied by two photocopies of newspaper articles outlining some of the model's history by one of its past owners.  The known exhibition history of this model includes displays at the U.S. Naval War College Museum, Newport, RI and The Intrepid Sea Air Space Museum, New York, NY.

Condition: Very good. The model has undergone some restoration as outlined in the accompanying articles including the re-attaching lose pieces and replacing the flags and rigging strings.  The eagle was broken at the feet above the wreath and has been repaired.

Cased Wooden Model of the Battleship Scharnhorst Handcrafted by German POW Heinz Kania

Lot # 571 (Sale Order: 567 of 698)

A large, detailed wooden model, approximately 32" in length, housed in a 34.75" x 13.5" x 8" pine and glass case.  The vessel is identified as the Battleship Scharnhorst and the profile and superstructure of the model closely match that ship.  The model's superstructure details include gun turrets, signal masts, flags, life boats and seaplanes.  Constructed of various shades of scrap wood, string and paper using simple tools.  A photocopy of a 1945 dated letter identifies the artist as Heinz Kania, POW 37602 interned at Lethbridge, Alberta, Canada Camp 133.  The model was traded to one of the guards and later purchased in 1949 by a local sporting goods store.  At some point the model came into the possession of a couple in Elkhart, IN, being auctioned with their estate in 1987.  It has passed through several other hands and was at one point exhibited at the U.S. Naval War College Museum, Newport, RI and The Intrepid Sea Air Space Museum, New York, NY.  The model is accompanied by a large archive of original and photocopy correspondence documenting the provenance of the model.

Condition: Very good. Some fading of the paper flags and slacking of the cord rigging lines.

US WWII Tom Williams Painted A-2 Flight Jacket from the Bomber "That's All Brother"

Lot # 572 (Sale Order: 568 of 698)

Brown leather, size 36R jacket with broken zipper and two front pockets. Left breast embossed with name tag, T. D. Williams. Two Russian red stars with hammer and sickle and two Italian Fascist's of blue and silver. These denote landings in these theaters of operations. Right breast has painted in silver and black, "Century 100 Bombers" and on the reverse is painted in red and gold "That's All Brother." Also with this jacket is an A-11 flight helmet size extra-large and post-war British goggles added later. The 100th BG from June 1943 to January 1944 concentrated its efforts against airfields, submarine facilities and aircraft industries in France and Germany. During this time the group was involved in the epic air battles over Regensburg-Aug.17, 1943 (for which it received it first Presidential Unit Citation) and Black Week-October 8-14, 1943 (Bremen, Munster, Marienburg and Schweinfurt-nicknamed "Black Thursday" because the 8th Air Force lost 60 bombers). It lead the bombing of Rujkan, Norway, which delayed the manufacture of heavy water for the German atomic bomb. Although the 100th did not have had the highest over-all loss rate of any group in the Eighth Air Force, it did have heavy losses during eight missions to Germany. Thus earning the nickname "The Bloody Hundredth". T. D. William was listed as a crew member on Capt T. H. Kemp's crew July 1944.

Condition: Very good. Broken zipper as mentioned above.
