Irish-American Col. Thomas Cass Presentation Sword with Reseach, Prints and More 

Lot # 204 (Sale Order: 201 of 698)      

Model 1850 Staff and Field Officer's sword, 30.5" blade etched with floral and military motifs. Obverse with presentation "Presented by the Members / of the Columbian Artillery / to Capt. Thomas Cass / Dec 1854." Ricasso with maker's mark "Ames Mfg. Co. / Chicopee, / Mass." Hilt has brass guard pierced with "US" and floral elements, and Phrygian helmet pommel embossed with acanthus leaves, both retaining good traces of gilt finish. Grip wrapped in shagreen and brass twist wire. Has a brass scabbard engraved on the obverse with a trophy of arms and presentation inscription between the upper mounts matching the one found on the blade, framed within a rococo scrolled shell border. Reverse stamped with an Ames address. Complete with bullion sword knot.

Lot includes related display items and research material, a 12" x 8.25" copy photograph of Colonel Thomas Cass in uniform wearing the sword, in a 27" x 23" period gilt frame with oak leaf motifs, a 22.5" x 28" limited edition print by Don Troiani entitled, "Brothers of Ireland Battle of Gaine's Mill June 27, 1862", numbered 688/1000. Two flags on left side of print with U.S. flag and battle flag that with verse in the flag that partially reads, Thy Sons by Adoption, Truly Firm Supporters, and Affections and Choice, Col. Thomas Cass, Irish Volunteers. Flag on right side of the print with lettering on the flag that reads Irish Brigade 68th Regt. N.Y. S.V., photographs of the Colonel Thomas Cass monument in Boston Gardens and a print-out image of Colonel Thomas Cass seated in the center with this sword surrounded by fellow members of the 9th Mass Regiment with a list of battle honors.

Lot also include the following books: an 1899 1st edition of History of the Ninth Mass. Volunteer Infantry by MacNamara, Commanding the Irish Ninth by Christian Samito and a 2000 reprint of History of the Ninth Mass. Volunteer Infantry by MacNamara with introduction by Christian Samito. In addition, the group includes two binders and folder of research and and related photos.

Colonel Thomas Cass was born in Farmly, Queens County Ireland in 1821, emigrating as a child to Boston. Before the Civil War, he rose to prominence as a North End leader in local military and political affairs. He joined the Columbian Artillery, an elite militia group, advancing to the rank of captain and commander. At the beginning of the Civil War, the Columbian Artillery became part of the 9th Mass. Vol. Inf. with Cass named as colonel on June 11, 1861. A predominantly Irish regiment, this unit  soon to be known as "the Fighting Ninth," fighting with distinction in the Army of the Potomac at Hanover Courthouse, Gaines Mill, Savage's Station, White Oak Swamp and Turkey Creek.

At the Battle of Malvern Hill, July, 1, 1862 Colonel Cass fell mortally wounded, shot through the face and mouth, dying on July 12. During that week's fighting, the regiment lost a total 19 officers but captured seven rebel standards.  During his funeral, the casket was draped with emblems of mourning and the stars and stripes. His sword, cap, and equipment rested on the casket.

In 1899, the city of Boston erected a monument to Massachusetts volunteers topped by a sculpture of Col. Cass.  

Condition: Very good. Blade finish is lightly subdued with age and has moderate nicks on the edge. Grip wrapping shows surface wear. Scabbard with moderate dents, heaviest at the drag. Sword knot worn with some edge loss on the strap.

Ballard Civil War Carbine by Ball & Williams 

Lot # 205 (Sale Order: 202 of 698)      

.44 RF caliber, 22" round barrel, S/N 9940. All matching numbers. The right side of the frame is marked Ballard's Patent / Nov. 5. 1861.  The left side of the frame is marked Ball & Williams On the left side of the frame is marked Ball & Williams / Worcester Mass. and Merwin & Bray Agts / New York.  With MM on the left side of the breechblock and in a cartouche on the butt.  The walnut buttstock has an unusual leather buttpad that has been fashioned. 

Condition: Barrel and frame have a plum patina.  Markings are visible but weak.  Stock has had an old repair by adding shoe leather as a buttplate.  The forearm has a slight age crack on the left side. Bore is very good. Mechanically fine.

US Civil War 1st Type Merrill Carbine

.54 caliber, 22" barrel, S/N 3391. With matching serial numbers throughout. The top of the breech lever is marked J.H. Merrill Balto. / Pat. July 1858. The same is also marked on the lockplate with additional patent dates, and the serial number at the rear. Walnut stock with tapered forearm and brass barrel band, patchbox, triggerguard and buttplate. With saddle bar and ring on the left side of the stock. 

Condition: The barrel has most of its original blue finish with some streaking near the breech. Wood shows dents and dings from normal field service. The bore and mechanics are very good.

Spencer Civil War Model Carbine

.52 caliber, 22" barrel, S/N 18347. The top flat of the frame has obscured Spencer markings. Blue finished barrel with case hardened frame, hammer, lever, saddle bar and lock. Walnut stock with inspector's cartouche, and sling swivel on underside of butt. 

Condition: The barrel has a good amount of original blue finish remaining, with small areas of spotting and streaking. The frame, lock, hammer and lever all have a flat grey patina, with some light traces of case coloring. The stock has some handling marks, but is in good overall condition. The magazine tube is present and in very good condition. The bore is in very good condition.

US Civil War Starr Carbine

.54 caliber, 21" barrel length, S/N 545. The top of the barrel is marked Starr Arms Co. Yonkers N.Y. The left side of the barrel is stamped EF at the breech. Behind the breechblock are the Starr patent dates. The walnut stock and forearm have a brass barrel band and buttplate. The left of the stock contains two inspector's cartouches. A saddle ring is on the left of the frame. 

Condition: The barrel has a brown and plum patina, with dark stains in small areas and some silver streaks towards the breech. The stock and forearm have nicks and dings from service wear. The bore is in good condition and will clean to better. The mechanics are excellent.

Joslyn Model 1855 "Monkey Tail" Carbine

.54 caliber, 22.5" barrel, S/N 160. The lockplate is marked A.H. Waters & Co. Milbury Mass. Saddle ring and bar opposite lockplate. With brass barrel band, trigger guard and buttplate. Walnut stock with inspector's cartouche above saddle bar. 

Condition: The barrel has a mottled blue and dark grey patina. The lock and lever have heavy grey and silver mottling. The markings are worn from the lever. The stock has some nicks and dings, with some wear to the left side above the saddle bar. The toe of the but has a small piece that is being held on the bottom with an old piece of athletic tape. The bore is in very good condition.

Gwyn & Campbell Type I Carbine

.52 caliber, 20" round-to-octagonal barrel, S/N 23. Lockplate marked Gwyn & Campbell Patent 1862 Hamilton O. The frame is marked Union Rifle. With 900 yard adjustable rear leaf sight. Hammer and lever are long serpentine shape and rounded. Walnut stock. 

Condition: All metal parts have a dark brownish plum patina. The lockplate displays some streaking. The barrel has some small dings to the metal on the octagonal part. The stock has several nicks and dings, with a repair to the left side where the stock meets the frame. A small section of the frame is chipped near the lower part of the left of the frame above the trigger. The trigger itself has a loose spring. The bore could use a cleaning.

Sharps Model 1852 Slant-Breech Carbine

.52 caliber, 21.5" barrel, S/N 4236. Barrel marked Sharps Rifle Manufg Co. Hartford, Conn. The lock is marked C. Sharps Patent 1852. The tang is marked C. Sharps Patent 1848. With brass barrel band, patchbox and buttplate. With short saddle bar variation with large ring. The interior of the patchbox lid is stamped 66 in the metal. 

Condition: The barrel has a grey and plum mottled patina, with streaking throughout. The lock, hammer and frame have a dark gunmetal patina with some light traces of case coloring remaining in the protected areas. The stock and forearm have some handling marks, and the buttstock has been expertly repaired at the toe. The bore is in very good condition.

Condition: The barrel has almost 100% of its original blue finish remaining. The breech has a majority of its case colors remaining. The stock has some slight nicks and dings. The bore is in very good to excellent condition.

.52 rimfire caliber, 24" barrel with leather cover, S/N 10968. Right side of frame marked Sharps & Hankins Philada, with the left side marked Sharps Patent 1859. With brass buttplate. Walnut stock. 

Condition: The leather on the barrel has a few nicks, but is for the most part in very good to excellent condition. It is still soft and shows no deterioration. The frame has a gunmetal patina, with light spotting. The stock has one nick to it but is in very good condition. The bore is in very good to excellent condition.

Joslyn Model 1862 Carbine

.52 RF caliber, 22" round barrel, S/N 3619. Marked on top of the breechblock BF Joslyns Patent October 8th 1861 June 24th 1862. Marked on the lockplate Joslyn Fire Arms Co, Stonington Conn. Brass buttplate, trigger guard and front band. With sling bar and ring opposite lockplate. Three-leaf rear barrel sight. With remnants of an inspector's cartouche marked above saddle bar. Stamped FDL on barrel and to the right of the saddle bar. Walnut stock. 

Condition: The barrel has a mottled blue and plum patina. The lock has a mostly mottled grey and brown patina. The breechblock latch has a hole drilled into the top. The stock has nicks and dings consistent with use. The bore is in very good condition.

.50-60-450 Joslyn rimfire caliber, 35.5" barrel, S/N 1020. Lockplate marked U.S. Springfield with an eagle motif, and dated 1864. The back of the breech is marked B.F. Joslyn's Patent Oct. 8th 1861 June 24th 1862. Walnut stock with three barrel bands and slotted ramrod. Underside of stock marked Z forward of the trigger guard. 

Condition: The barrel has a shellac to it, with a grey patina underneath. The lockplate also has a shellac to it. The stock has some nicks and dings, but is in very good overall condition. The bore is in very good condition.

Maynard Tape Primed D.S. Nippes, Philadelphia Conversion

.69 caliber, 42" round barrel. Barrel marked U.S. over J.C.B. over P. The upper tang is dated 1848. Maynard primer door marked Edward Maynard Patentee 1846. Rear of lockplate marked Mill Creek PA 1846. Walnut stock with two inspector's cartouches opposite lock, three barrel bands and trumpet-shaped ramrod. 

Condition: The barrel has a silver and plum mottled patina throughout, with peppering towards the breech. The lock and tape primer also have a mottled patina. The stock has some nicks and dings, but is in good overall condition with clear and crisp cartouches. The bore could use a cleaning but is in good overall condition.

Fayetteville C.S.A. Smoothbore Rifle, Type IV

.58 caliber, 33" barrel. Barrel marked VP over an eagle head. The lockplate is marked Fayetteville with an eagle motif over C.S.A. and dated 1864 at the rear. With brass fore end, barrel bands, trigger guard and buttplate marked C.S.A. Walnut stock with inspector's cartouche opposite the lock, and tulip-head ramrod. 

Condition: The barrel and lock have a mostly brown patina with some streaking. The stock has some nicks and dings, along with a small crack towards the rear of the lock, and opposite of the lock. A section of the stock along the right breech above the hammer is missing. The rear sight is a period replacement. The ramrod is slightly dinged. The bore is dirty, but in good condition.

Whitney Rolling Block Military Carbine

.45 caliber, 20.5" barrel, S/N 63002. Top of barrel marked 45 at the breech. With inspector's cartouche marked on left of frame behind the saddle bar, and a firing proof behind the trigger guard. There are no other markings appearing anywhere on the frame or barrel. 

Condition: The barrel has almost all of its original blue finish remaining, with some very light fading and spotting towards the muzzle. The frame and trigger guard display very good case coloring, with some wear to the coloring on the tang. The stock and forearm have some initials lightly carved into them. The bore is in very good to excellent condition.

U.S. Springfield Model 1816 Conversion with Bayonet 

Lot # 221 (Sale Order: 218 of 698)      

.69 caliber, 42" round barrel. The barrel is marked with a P over an eagle head, over a V. At the breech, the barrel is marked X53. The upper tang is dated 1832. The lock is marked with an eagle motif over U.S., and is marked Springfield 1832 at the rear. To the left of the upper tang AA3 is stamped into the wood.The walnut stock has three barrel bands, sling swivels, a U.S. marked buttplate and a trumpet-headed ramrod. The stock features two crisp inspector's cartouches opposite the lock, and an additional one behind the trigger guard. The correct socket bayonet is included with the rifle. 

Condition: All metal parts have a beautiful brown finish. The stock has a beautiful open grain and you can feel the feathering throughout. The bore is good, and could clean to very good. The mechanics are excellent.

.52 caliber, 21.5" barrel, S/N 10301. Barrel marked Sharps Rifle Manufg Co. Hartford Conn., with the left side of the barrel stamped with a J. The lock is marked Sharp's Patent 1852. The tang is marked Sharps Patent 1848, along with the serial. With a saddle ring and bar affixed to the brass barrel band and the frame. Walnut stock and forearm with brass patchbox and buttplate. 

Condition: All metal parts are finished bright and shiny, with the frame, lock, hammer and lever having areas of spotting. The walnut stock and forearm have some nicks and dings, but are in very good overall condition. The bore and mechanics are excellent.

Condition: Barrel is dark with some pitting and turning a brown. Sub-inspector's initials are visible on the barrel. Hammer and lock are dark brown with some pitting on the hammer. Stock has some nicks and dings with visible cartouche on the left flat opposite the lock.

.54 caliber, 8.5" round barrel with military marks on the left side of barrel. Brass furniture with walnut stock. Lockplate marked H. Aston; on the rear of lockplate dated 1851. Tang dated 1851, captured ram-rod. 

Condition: Barrel is finish bright. Sub-inspector's initials are visible on the barrel. Hammer and lock are bright. Stock has some nicks and dings with visible cartouche on the left flat opposite the lock. Gun has been kept clean.

Cased Colt Model 1849 Revolver 

Lot # 225 (Sale Order: 222 of 698)      

.31 caliber, 6" octagonal barrel, New York two-line address, S/N 315349. Blued finish. Case colored frame and lever. Varnished walnut grips, silver plated trigger guard and backstrap. Case is mahogany with a deep maroon lining with flask. Colt Patent marked brass mold. 

Condition: Barrel retains  most original blue finish, but thinning. Cylinder retains some original blue finish, but thinning and turning plum. Cylinder stop has caused a very light line through the cylinder stops. This is a pocket pistol that would have had the standard grey-to-blue case colors on the frame, however only traces are remaining. The frame has a nice blue-to-grey look. Backstrap and trigger guard show only brass. Grips retain most of the original varnish. The case is in excellent condition with a few scratches on the lid. Otherwise it retains most of the original varnished finish. The flask is marked "E. Pluribus Unum" and has most of the original lacquer finish with two small dents in the body of the flask. Lining of case is original and nicely aged with the imprint of the revolver.

Colt Model 1861 Navy Revolver

.36 caliber, 7.5" round barrel, S/N 20635. London proofs on the cylinder.  New York barrel address. Blue and case colored finish with silver plated backstrap and trigger guard.  Walnut grips. 

Condition: Barrel still retains some of the bright original blue finish fading to a plum.  Cylinder is mostly plum with excellent cylinder scene.  Frame is a mottled grey to brown.  Backstrap and trigger guard still retain most of the silver-plated finish.  Grips retain most of he original varnished finish.

Remington New Model Police Revolver with Factory Conversion

Condition: The nickel finish is strong and present on almost the entirety of the revolver, with some small amounts of brass showing through on the edges of the trigger guard. The grips show normal wear and are in good condition. The bore is very good. The mechanics are excellent.

Colt Model 1861 Navy Revolver with Fitting for Stock

Condition: Sharp and crisp gun that is a silvery gray patina with salt and pepper pitting on the metal surfaces. The frame and hammer have small traces of case color. The brass has a pleasing patina. The grips have nicks and dings consistent with age. The bore is good. Mechanically good.
