Irish-American Col. Thomas Cass Presentation Sword with Reseach, Prints and More
Lot # 204 (Sale Order: 201 of 698)
Lot includes related display items and research material, a 12" x 8.25" copy photograph of Colonel Thomas Cass in uniform wearing the sword, in a 27" x 23" period gilt frame with oak leaf motifs, a 22.5" x 28" limited edition print by Don Troiani entitled, "Brothers of Ireland Battle of Gaine's Mill June 27, 1862", numbered 688/1000. Two flags on left side of print with U.S. flag and battle flag that with verse in the flag that partially reads, Thy Sons by Adoption, Truly Firm Supporters, and Affections and Choice, Col. Thomas Cass, Irish Volunteers. Flag on right side of the print with lettering on the flag that reads Irish Brigade 68th Regt. N.Y. S.V., photographs of the Colonel Thomas Cass monument in Boston Gardens and a print-out image of Colonel Thomas Cass seated in the center with this sword surrounded by fellow members of the 9th Mass Regiment with a list of battle honors.
Lot also include the following books: an 1899 1st edition of History of the Ninth Mass. Volunteer Infantry by MacNamara, Commanding the Irish Ninth by Christian Samito and a 2000 reprint of History of the Ninth Mass. Volunteer Infantry by MacNamara with introduction by Christian Samito. In addition, the group includes two binders and folder of research and and related photos.
Colonel Thomas Cass was born in Farmly, Queens County Ireland in 1821, emigrating as a child to Boston. Before the Civil War, he rose to prominence as a North End leader in local military and political affairs. He joined the Columbian Artillery, an elite militia group, advancing to the rank of captain and commander. At the beginning of the Civil War, the Columbian Artillery became part of the 9th Mass. Vol. Inf. with Cass named as colonel on June 11, 1861. A predominantly Irish regiment, this unit soon to be known as "the Fighting Ninth," fighting with distinction in the Army of the Potomac at Hanover Courthouse, Gaines Mill, Savage's Station, White Oak Swamp and Turkey Creek.
At the Battle of Malvern Hill, July, 1, 1862 Colonel Cass fell mortally wounded, shot through the face and mouth, dying on July 12. During that week's fighting, the regiment lost a total 19 officers but captured seven rebel standards. During his funeral, the casket was draped with emblems of mourning and the stars and stripes. His sword, cap, and equipment rested on the casket.
In 1899, the city of Boston erected a monument to Massachusetts volunteers topped by a sculpture of Col. Cass.
Condition: Very good. Blade finish is lightly subdued with age and has moderate nicks on the edge. Grip wrapping shows surface wear. Scabbard with moderate dents, heaviest at the drag. Sword knot worn with some edge loss on the strap.

Condition: Barrel and frame have a plum patina. Markings are visible but weak. Stock has had an old repair by adding shoe leather as a buttplate. The forearm has a slight age crack on the left side. Bore is very good. Mechanically fine.

Condition: The barrel has most of its original blue finish with some streaking near the breech. Wood shows dents and dings from normal field service. The bore and mechanics are very good.

Spencer Civil War Model Carbine

Condition: The barrel has a good amount of original blue finish remaining, with small areas of spotting and streaking. The frame, lock, hammer and lever all have a flat grey patina, with some light traces of case coloring. The stock has some handling marks, but is in good overall condition. The magazine tube is present and in very good condition. The bore is in very good condition.

Condition: The barrel has a brown and plum patina, with dark stains in small areas and some silver streaks towards the breech. The stock and forearm have nicks and dings from service wear. The bore is in good condition and will clean to better. The mechanics are excellent.

Joslyn Model 1855 "Monkey Tail" Carbine
Lot # 209 (Sale Order: 206 of 698)
Condition: The barrel has a mottled blue and dark grey patina. The lock and lever have heavy grey and silver mottling. The markings are worn from the lever. The stock has some nicks and dings, with some wear to the left side above the saddle bar. The toe of the but has a small piece that is being held on the bottom with an old piece of athletic tape. The bore is in very good condition.

Gwyn & Campbell Type I Carbine
Lot # 210 (Sale Order: 207 of 698)
Condition: All metal parts have a dark brownish plum patina. The lockplate displays some streaking. The barrel has some small dings to the metal on the octagonal part. The stock has several nicks and dings, with a repair to the left side where the stock meets the frame. A small section of the frame is chipped near the lower part of the left of the frame above the trigger. The trigger itself has a loose spring. The bore could use a cleaning.

Condition: The barrel has a grey and plum mottled patina, with streaking throughout. The lock, hammer and frame have a dark gunmetal patina with some light traces of case coloring remaining in the protected areas. The stock and forearm have some handling marks, and the buttstock has been expertly repaired at the toe. The bore is in very good condition.

Condition: The leather on the barrel has a few nicks, but is for the most part in very good to excellent condition. It is still soft and shows no deterioration. The frame has a gunmetal patina, with light spotting. The stock has one nick to it but is in very good condition. The bore is in very good to excellent condition.

Condition: The barrel has a mottled blue and plum patina. The lock has a mostly mottled grey and brown patina. The breechblock latch has a hole drilled into the top. The stock has nicks and dings consistent with use. The bore is in very good condition.

Condition: The barrel has a silver and plum mottled patina throughout, with peppering towards the breech. The lock and tape primer also have a mottled patina. The stock has some nicks and dings, but is in good overall condition with clear and crisp cartouches. The bore could use a cleaning but is in good overall condition.

Condition: The barrel and lock have a mostly brown patina with some streaking. The stock has some nicks and dings, along with a small crack towards the rear of the lock, and opposite of the lock. A section of the stock along the right breech above the hammer is missing. The rear sight is a period replacement. The ramrod is slightly dinged. The bore is dirty, but in good condition.

Condition: The barrel has almost all of its original blue finish remaining, with some very light fading and spotting towards the muzzle. The frame and trigger guard display very good case coloring, with some wear to the coloring on the tang. The stock and forearm have some initials lightly carved into them. The bore is in very good to excellent condition.

Cased Colt Model 1849 Revolver
Lot # 225 (Sale Order: 222 of 698)
Condition: Barrel retains most original blue finish, but thinning. Cylinder retains some original blue finish, but thinning and turning plum. Cylinder stop has caused a very light line through the cylinder stops. This is a pocket pistol that would have had the standard grey-to-blue case colors on the frame, however only traces are remaining. The frame has a nice blue-to-grey look. Backstrap and trigger guard show only brass. Grips retain most of the original varnish. The case is in excellent condition with a few scratches on the lid. Otherwise it retains most of the original varnished finish. The flask is marked "E. Pluribus Unum" and has most of the original lacquer finish with two small dents in the body of the flask. Lining of case is original and nicely aged with the imprint of the revolver.

Condition: Barrel still retains some of the bright original blue finish fading to a plum. Cylinder is mostly plum with excellent cylinder scene. Frame is a mottled grey to brown. Backstrap and trigger guard still retain most of the silver-plated finish. Grips retain most of he original varnished finish.

Remington New Model Police Revolver with Factory Conversion

Condition: The nickel finish is strong and present on almost the entirety of the revolver, with some small amounts of brass showing through on the edges of the trigger guard. The grips show normal wear and are in good condition. The bore is very good. The mechanics are excellent.

Condition: Sharp and crisp gun that is a silvery gray patina with salt and pepper pitting on the metal surfaces. The frame and hammer have small traces of case color. The brass has a pleasing patina. The grips have nicks and dings consistent with age. The bore is good. Mechanically good.
