Cased Pair of Percussion London Pistols Presented by James E. Fitzgerald
Lot # 231 (Sale Order: 228 of 698)
James Edward Fitzgerald (1818-1896) was a British born politician who played a significant role in the establishment of government in New Zealand. The clipper ship "Red Jacket" was built in Maine in 1853, and is most famous for setting the trans Atlantic sailing record at the time, in 1854. Once it arrived in Liverpool, it was sold to the British and set sail for Melbourne, Australia. The ship was then used in the immigrant trade in the region. The ship never set sail for California from any location, so while it is unlikely these were gifted to a biological son (Fitzgerald married in 1850), it is not inconceivable that Fitzgerald had gifted these pistols to someone named John traveling on the Red Jacket to Australia.
Condition: Pistols are excellent. Case is in good condition, has been relined. The authenticity of the plaque itself cannot be verified.
