Confederate Boyle & Gamble Pattern Full-Length Pike  

Lot # 101 (Sale Order: 101 of 698)      

96" overall length, 12" double-edged blade stamped on one side of the ricasso "CSA." iron pointed oval crossguard and ferrule, attached to the pole by two iron languets retaining much of the black painted finish. Complete with wooden pole and iron foot.

Thos. W. Cofer Correspondence with His Wife, 1864 

Lot # 103 (Sale Order: 102 of 698)      

ALS from Cofer to Mag, May 22, 1864. Cofer says that the most recent letter from his wife proves that she did not receive his previous correspondence, so he must reiterate. He says he is attempted to collect all that was owed to him before being ordered to evacuate, and left $1,127 in the care of the Tignor family.

Accompanied by another ALS written the following day, dated Richmond, May 23, 1864, 1p, 5 x 8 in., saying that the previous day’s mail could not go out, and that he is still well.  Accompanied by the original envelope addressed to Mrs. M.A. Cofer in Southampton Co., Va., care of Mr. J.A. Cross, with two five-cent CSA stamps with Richmond/May 23 cancelation.

Also accompanying the lot is a 2pp ALS from Cofer to Mag from before they were married, dated Portsmouth, Feb. 9, 1852, and regarding their marriage arrangements.

Limited Edition Model of a Confederate Whitworth 12 Pound Breechloading Rifle with Limber  

Lot # 105 (Sale Order: 104 of 698)      

Handcrafted by Russell A. Norgan of Gettysburg, PA. Serial number 2 of 3. Rifle barrel is 25" long; wheels are 15.5" high; and overall length is 37". Limber including pole is 36" long; wheels are 15.5" high; and 17" width. Limber's ammunition box contains ammunition and a taped instructional chart entitled, "A Table of Fire For the 10 Pounder Gun Model 1861." Lot is complete with two rammers with attached sponges and with several water buckets attached. Overall length of rifle and limber is 66".

Mass Arms Percussion Pocket Revolver

.31 caliber, 3.25" octagonal barrel with ramrod mounted on the left side of barrel, S/N 728. Marked on top of the barrel,  blued finish with checkered walnut grips.  Cliff owned this revolver because it was similar to the gun on the Cofer patent papers.

Condition: Very sharp and crisp revolver retaining a lot of the bright shiny original blue finish.  Checkered grips are very good with some minor mars to the checkering.

*Customer Mauser Bolt Action Rifle with Scope by Gartman Arms Co. 

Lot # 107 (Sale Order: 106 of 698)      

.244 caliber, 25" barrel length, S/N 3437. Marking on top of the barrel "Gartman" next to caliber markings.  Blue barrel and receiver with polished bolt.  Checkered deluxe walnut pistol grip stock with maple fore end cap and pistol grip cap.  Left side of stock has a cheek piece. Rubber recoil pad.  Mounted scope by J. Unertl with S/N 39175.  This rifle was one of Cliff's personal hunting rifles.

Condition: This rifle retains most of the blue finish on the barrel and receiver with very minor muzzle wear.  The stock is in excellent condition with very minimal wear.  The recoil pad is very good.  The bore is very good and can clean to better.  Mechanically excellent.  The scope has good optics with thin post.

.300 magnum caliber, 24" barrel length, S/N 3821. Left side of the receiver marked "Weatherby Mark V" over "Patents Pending". Left side of barrel marked "Weatherby". Right side of barrel marked "Made in Germany". Blue barrel and receiver with checkered deluxe walnut stock. Left side of stock has a cheek piece. Rosewood fore end cap and pistol grip. Weatherby marked recoil pad. Leupold mounted scope. Scope is marked "Made in U.S.A." over S/N 129935. Scope is 2x7. Comes with leather shoulder sling. This is one of Cliff's personal hunting rifles.

Condition: The barrel and receiver retain most of the blue finish with some scratches and muzzle wear. The stock is in very good condition with minor scratches, nicks and dings consistent with use. Markings are sharp and crisp.  Bore is very good plus. Mechanically excellent. Optics on the scope are very good with thin post. Sling is very good.

**Remington Model 700 

Lot # 109 (Sale Order: 108 of 698)      

.458 Win Mag caliber, 26" barrel length, S/N 143581, "Remington Model 700" marked on the left side of the receiver. Blue barrel and bolt with checkered walnut pistol grip stock. Rosewood fore end cap and pistol grip cap. Buttstock has a cheek piece on the left side. Black Remington marked recoil pad. Comes with leather shoulder sling. The was one of Cliff's personal hunting rifles. This rifle was used on many of his African Safari trips.

Condition: The barrel and receiver retain most of the blue finish. The stock is in very good to excellent condition with minor scratches.  Recoil pad is in excellent condition. All markings are sharp and crisp. Leather sling is excellent. Bore is bright and shiny. Mechanically excellent.

Engraved Powder Horn ID'd to M. Lane 

Lot # 110 (Sale Order: 109 of 698)      

16.5" curved horn, turned spout with three raised rings.  M. Lane engraved in a banner top center; British Coat of Arms center of horn with cannons, flags and houses; bottom center of horn has a great walled city. Left side has the date 1775 and a tree. 

Condition: Horn has a natural patina caused from the polychrome bleeding over and causing a natural patination.  The reds are mixing with the brown. Nice untouched wood plug.  Overall excellent.

Engraved Powder Horn ID'd to John Blavelt, 1778, a Possible British Loyalist 

Lot # 111 (Sale Order: 110 of 698)      

6" early New York style powder horn inscribed "JOHN BLAVELT / HIS HORN JULY 1778 / NEW YORK MILITA" and "NEW YORK" over a cityscape with harbor scene with British flags. Other engraved elements include a mythical sun face, panoply of arms with British flags, suggesting that militiaman Blavelt's loyalties lay with the English crown.  Wooden spout and base with brass and nickel plated sling stud, lacks stopper. 

Condition: Good; spout and plug finish worn, engraving shallow but still crisp.

16th Century Comb Morion Helmet

Iron helmet with 2.5" comb, brim comes to a 2.75" point at both ends. Body and comb etched with three decorative bands of floral motifs with the figure of an eagle on both sides of the comb and facial profile portraits on the body, and two rope-like bands on the brim.  Helmet has a small hole piercing the top of the comb, complete with brass rivets and an iron plume holder, body is unlined. 

Condition: Good. Light age toning and spots. Interior has light, old surface oxidation.

German 17th Century Saxon Broadsword

38" double edge blade with central fuller, 2" wide at the hilt, engraved with crescent moon, stars and sun motifs, boot hallmark on the ricasso. Hilt has iron crescent shaped crossguard with hand ring and round bar stock counter guard, twist and braided iron wire wrapped grip and engraved ball pommel.  Appears to be a composite piece of old and new parts. 

Condition: Very good; surface oxidation on the grip and counter guard.

German Wheellock Rifle

.650" bore diameter, 28" flared octagonal rifled barrel.  Early large butt style stock, iron mounted.  Double set triggers, finger grooved trigger guard.  Two engraved bone inlays for sidelock escutcheons. Engraved hammer and spring.  Raised carved stock, carving on the wood sliding patchbox cover, around the cheek piece, behind the tang, around the rear ferules, molding around the ramrod channel, iron nosecap. Early rifle with wheel on the inside of lockplate. 

Condition: All metal has nice even look, grey to brown with smooth finish. Stock is excellent with some nicks and dings. Stock has untouched patina.

Early French European Flintlock Rifle

.680 bore diameter, 48.5" tapered octagonal barrel. Large brass grooved rear sight with blade front sight. Rounded lockplate and hammer.  Brass furniture, trigger guard and buttplate with fleur de lis  design. Fancy brass sideplate with winged sidelock screws.  Walnut stock with raised carving behind the tang, around the comb of the stock, rear ferule and molding around the ramrod channel. 

Condition: Barrel and lock with nice grey to brown patina, smooth metal. Brass with untouched patina.  Stock is excellent with a dark honey look. Minor nicks and dings.  Overall excellent.

Early Flintlock Rifle Marked Penterman Leuwarde 

Lot # 116 (Sale Order: 115 of 698)      

.680 bore diameter, 39.5" octagonal-to-round barrel, smoothbore. No markings on the top of the barrel.  Marked on the lockplate "PENTERMAN LEUWARDE".  Early style lock, curved lockplate. Flat lockplate with flat shaped hammer, faceted pan, finial on the frizzen spring. Brass furniture, extra wide butt, wood sliding patchbox.  Raised carving around the tang, cheek piece and moldings around the lock, sideplate and ramrod channel.  Walnut stock. 

Condition: Barrel and lock with nice even brown patina.  Some pitting around the touch hole and pan protruding on to the barrel. Brass with untouched look. Stock is excellent retaining most of the untouched patina.  Carving is excellent.

Kentucky Flintlock Rifle Marked P. Marker 

Lot # 117 (Sale Order: 116 of 698)      

.40 caliber, 41.5" octagonal barrel. Signed on top of the barrel P. Marker. Four-piece engraved patchbox, unusual bird-shaped head of patchbox, engraved brass furniture, silver oval inlaid on cheek piece with 10 pointed star, silver thumb piece, single trigger, curly maple. Peter Marker made flintlock rifles in Hagerstown, Maryland in 1822 then moved to Bedford, PA in 1828.  

Condition: Barrel markings are clear and readable.  Barrel has some pitting around the percussion drum and protruding  onto the lock. Lock and barrel with even patina.  Furniture has nice patina.  Stock is very good with a small area of replacement at the nose cap, expertly done.  A fine example of Marker's work.

Rockbridge Country, Virginia Full-Stock Flintlock Rifle by Wm. Bogan 

Lot # 118 (Sale Order: 117 of 698)      

.45 caliber, 42.75" octagonal barrel in even dark finish with W. Bogan engraved behind the rear sight. Original flint. Has engraved commercial lock marked METCALF, double set triggers. Action functions properly but does not hold well at full cock.  Maple stock has shallow line carving along the ramrod channel, an iron trigger guard, buttplate and ramrod pipes, pewter nose cap and brass four-piece engraved patchbox and stock rest plate in front of the trigger guard.  There is a 13.5" long narrow section of closely matching replaced wood along the upper barrel channel on the right side, blends well and is barely noticeable.  
 
William Bogan is a documented rifle maker working at Natural Bridge, VA in Rockbrige Co.  This particular rifle is pictured and discussed by Edwin Gewirz in "Long Rifles of the Valley of Virginia," American Society of Arms Collectors Bulletin 60: 2-19, pgs. 11-12.     

Condition: Good. Bore has strong rifling with moderate pitting. Stock with normal age toning and service wear.

Kentucky Flintlock Rifle with Barrel Marked "I" Eagle "M" 

Lot # 119 (Sale Order: 118 of 698)      

.45 caliber, 43" octagonal barrel, marked with "I" eagle "M" on top flat, original flint. Flat unmarked lockplate and goose neck hammer, functions properly.  Maple stock with minimal carving, cheek rest on the left buttstock.  Brass furniture features an engraved four-piece brass patchbox pierced top.  Complete with wooden ramrod.  Possibly the work of one of several late 18th or early 19th century rifle maker's bearing the name Jacob Metzger. 

Condition: Good. Barrel has turned a dark plum brown, moderate on the breech near the touch hole, vise marks on the sides. Stock normal wear on the edges, a few dings and nicks.

Full-Stock Flintlock Fowler 

Lot # 120 (Sale Order: 119 of 698)      

10 gauge, 49.5" round to octagonal barrel. The lockplate is unmarked. The fowler features several brass furnishings, a fore end cap, ferrules, trigger guard with pineapple finial, buttplate and a serpent form sideplate. The trigger guard and the buttplate feature engravings. Full-length walnut stock with high comb. 

Condition: The barrel has an old brown patina, with some pitting towards the muzzle. The lock has a dark brown patina, with some oxidization to the hammer. The stock has several age cracks throughout, mostly in the butt. There is an old repaired area on the right side of the butt. The stock has some loss on the sides towards the front of the barrel. The bore is dirty and will clean to good. The mechanics are good.  Overall nice early flint that is untouched.

Contemporary Custom Made Full-Stock Flint Lock Kentucky Rifle by Judson Brennan 

Lot # 121 (Sale Order: 120 of 698)      

.40 caliber,  42" octagonal barrel with inlay silver pannel on the top face engraved with the maker's name "J.  Brennan No 34." Unmarked flat lockplate and goose neck hammer, double set triggers, action does not hold. Tiger maple stock has raised carving around the ramrod channel, barrel tang, lock and cheek rest, brass furniture includes a four-piece engraved patchbox, silver oval wrist escutcheon plate and inlay eight-pointed star on the cheek piece.  Complete with wood ramrod.

Judson Brennan is a well respected contemporary rifle maker living in Alaska.  

Condition: Very good; bore bright with strong rifling, lock needs adjusting to function properly, minor nicks and scratches on the stock, finish beginning to develop a dark patina.

U.S. Henry Philadelphia 1807 Flintlock

.54 caliber, 10.25" round smoothbore barrel marked "_ . HENRY PHILA" with an eagle head over "P" cartouche. Original flint, lockplate marked "US" and "_ . HENR_ / PHIL_." Hammer does not hold at full or half cock.  Walnut stock with brass furniture and a "V / D.P" cartouche. Complete with wood ramrod. 

Condition: Good. Bore dark with moderate pitting, even dark patina on the barrel and lock. Minor chips around the lock mortise and a small hairline crack opposite the lock.

Model 1832 U.S. General's Sword and Scabbard 

Lot # 123 (Sale Order: 122 of 698)      

30" double edged blade with central fuller, etched with military and floral motifs, no maker's mark.  Hilt has gilt brass clam shell and "D" guard  both embossed with pearl edging, urn shaped engraved pommel, grip wrapped in silver wire. Brass scabbard retains much of the gilt finish, engraved with floral patterns. 

Condition: Good; blade graying, etched pattern sharp, a few nicks on the cutting edges.  Hilt retains good traces of the gilt finish.  Scabbard aging to brown were the gilt has worn off, has a few minor dents.

Republic of Mexico Model 1804 Lion Head and Snake Hilt Sword and Scabbard

27" shortened quillback blade etched with Mexican eagles, military and floral motifs, unmarked.  Hilt has a nickel plated stylized serpent "S" cross guard and lion head pommel with ring, grip of grooved walnut. Complete with nickel plated metal scabbard. 

Condition: Fair to good. Blade is dark and pitted, plating worn on the hilt.  Scabbard with some flaking finish and surface oxidation.

Model 1832 U.S. General Officer's and Staff Sword and Scabbard 

Lot # 125 (Sale Order: 124 of 698)      

31" double edged blade with deep central fuller, etched with US, military and floral motifs, maker marked N. P. Ames / Cutler / Springfield.  Hilt has a gilt brass double clamshell and "D" guard edged in a pearl line, and an engraved globe pommel, grip of banded silver.  Complete with black leather scabbard with brass mountings engraved in multiple line bands, with double hanger rings and a clamshell frog stud. 

Condition: Good; blade retains must of the bright finish with scattered gray spots.  Scabbard leather finish flaking with a partial break above the drag, some seam separation on the reverse.

Model 1840 Heavy Calvary Presentation Quality Saber 

Lot # 126 (Sale Order: 125 of 698)      

34.5" blade etched with a "US" monogram, eagle and military trophy motifs on a gilt panel. Spine marked "IRON:PROOF" with an oak leaf pattern. Maker marked on the obverse above the ricasso "HORSTMANN /  & SONS / PHILADELPHIA;", ricasso stamped with the king's head logo of the German blade maker Weyersberg. Hilt has a three-branch guard embossed with floral elements and Phrygian helmet pommel edged with acanthus leaves. Ribbed dark horn grip has brass wire wrap present but loose.  Nickel-plated scabbard has ornate pierced gilt finished mountings embossed with a charging cavalryman on the lower hanger band and a gargoyle on the drag. 

Condition: Mostly very good. Blade remains bright with slight age toning. Wire grip wrap is broken but all is present and could be restored. Scabbard has some grease residue on the reverse that can be easily cleaned.
