Napoleonic War Era British Volunteer Officer's Coatee

Lot # 139 (Sale Order: 138 of 698)

Red wool broadcloth tailcoat with dark blue wool standing collar, lapels and cuffs, all piped in white as are the waist pocket flaps, with white turn-backs on the tails.  Tail ends decorated with bullion and sequin flaming bomb motif on dark blue.  Has hand-worked false buttonholes on the collar, cuffs, pocket flaps and back center waist. Brass coin embossed with unit script initials "NV", backmarked "HAMMOND, TURNER & DICKINSON" dating them between 1796 and 1820.  The garment is completely hand-sewn and all buttons are present except for one small hidden button under the left pocket flap, and are original to this coat.  A gold bullion and sequin Lieutenant's epaulet on dark blue wool is worn on the right shoulder. The coat is fully lined in white baize with matching broadcloth lining the collar.  This coatee is typical of a British officer's uniform from the 1800 to 1815 period and the buttons point to it coming from an as yet unidentified volunteer regiment.  As a volunteer, the coat's original owner likely saw home service during the Napoleonic Wars. While there is no known War of 1812 connection, the coatee was found in Ohio and the pattern is correct for that period.

Proceeds of this sale will benefit the Auglaize County Historical Society.

Condition: Very good. This garment is well preserved for its age with minimal scattered mothing, minor seam separation and moderate age toning, nothing detracting.
