Condition: Good; blade aging to gray, finish on the blue panel is fading but still discernible. Hilt retains very good traces of the gilt finish, grip cracked on the left side.

Condition: Fair to good. Metal with even dark age patina. Bore with heavy oxidation. Grip cracked on the obverse behind the frame; some wood loss behind the hammer.

Massachusetts Militia Musket by Rufus Perkins
Lot # 134 (Sale Order: 133 of 698)
Condition: Touch hole has some pitting that spreads upward and onto the barrel. The barrel has a smooth dark brown patina, with good clear markings. Lockplate and hammer have dark brown patina with sharp and crisp markings. Stock still retains most of the dark patina; stock has some nicks and dings. Brass has nice tarnished patina. There is an old repair to the area on the left side behind the nosecap. The wood is cracked about 6" back from the nosecap on the left side. Overall this is an excellent musket.

Contemporary Kentucky Flintlock Rifle by Jack Haugh and Horn from Pennsylvania Bicentennial

Pennsylvania Bicentennial rifle commissioned only 200 of these rifles. They were built by Jack Haugh, an inductee to the Contemporary Rifle Makers Hall of Fame, with assistance from Mark Silver and Monte Mandarino. Barrel was made by Bob Paris and the locks by Bud Siler.
Condition: Excellent, showing little wear.

Kentucky Style Flintlock Pistol, John Williams 1812
Lot # 137 (Sale Order: 136 of 698)
John Williams served as a Second Lieutenant in Captain John Irwin's Troop of Light Dragoons, Major Freeman's Squadron of Calvary, Georgia Militia in the War of 1812 from August 22, 1813 to February 28, 1814. Later, he was a Georgia State Senator from 1822 to 1828 and State Treasurer from November 24, 1831 to November 23, 1833.
Family oral tradition relates that William's granddaughter, Mary Anne Cowles, hid this pistol in her pantaloons from Union troops during Sherman's March to the Sea. It was originally part a set with only this one surviving. Full provenance is included.
Condition: Good. Bore dark with light pitting, rifling strong. Barrel and lock have a plum patina. One sideplate screw has been replaced. Crack on the left grip has an old repair with two nails.

Emperor Napoleon's Silver Campaign Cup Captured at Waterloo
Lot # 140 (Sale Order: 139 of 698)
The Belle Alliance was an inn just south of the Waterloo battlefield were the British, Prussian and other allied armies converged after defeating the French. The Prussians generally referred to the battle as "Belle Alliance" while the English called it "Waterloo." Napoleon was forced to leave the field in haste at the battle's conclusion and abandoned much of his personal campaign equipment. An unknown Prussian was lucky enough to claim this cup as his souvenir.
Condition: Very good. There is a small crack on the rim above the reverse inscription.

Condition: Good; bore mostly dark but with sharp rifling, barrel with even brown patina with moderate pitting around the touch hole. Lock is mottled grey to brown with light oxidation. Stock shows normal age and service wear, cracked and repaired on the right side of the tang down to the trigger.

U.S. Model 1814 Deringer Flintlock Rifle

Condition: The barrel has a mottled dark plum and silver patina, with pitting near the flashpan. The lock, trigger guard, patchbox and buttplate also have a mottled plum and silver patina. The stock shows several areas of wear consistent with use. There is a crack extending from the upper tang down towards the rear of the lockplate. The bore is in good condition and could use a cleaning.

1840s New York Militia Presentation Sword and Archive of John P. Ellis
Lot # 146 (Sale Order: 145 of 698)
Artifacts and ephemera relating to Ellis' life outside the militia include a cased half plate daguerreotype image, reportedly of Ellis ca 1850, in citizen's dress with an early gilt brass mat and damaged embossed paper covered wood case. Ellis was a prolific poet and hymn writer an the archive contain a small scrapbook of his poems published in the early 1840s New York papers, eight mid-19th century newspapers containing his poems, hymns or articles and three hand-out sheets with hymn lyrics. Two original patent documents record Ellis' invention of window sash lock in 1864 and a water proof safe in 1867.
The subject's political activity is documented in a broadside from 1872 endorsing him for the office of Flushing's police justice and a handwritten copy of a speech on oppressive New York taxes delivered in 1894. The lot culminates with a 9" x 7" ink wash portrait of Ellis ca 1865.
John P. Ellis, 1820 to 1896, was a life-long resident of Flushing, Queens, active in his community as a civil leader and militia officer. An active poet and hymnist, his poems were first published in the early 1840s and his sacred music first appeared in hymnals in 1850. At least two patents were issued to him. The Union Riflemen were organized in 1836 by Capt. Samuel S. Parker and wore a hunting frock style uniforms and carried custom-made rifles and saber bayonets.
Condition: The sword is good with mostly bright blade beginning to lightly age. Retains much of the gilt finish on the brass parts with an even light brown patina on the highlights, details and engraving are crisp. The daguerreotype is will focused with some minor oxidation. it appears to have never been removed from the mat or cleaned; the case is broken at the hinge and lacks the bottom edge. Papers and other ephemera show normal age, creasing and wear.

Model 1816 N. Starr Musket

Condition: All iron parts have an untouched browning patina with some pitting. The lockplate has traces of case color with faint pitting that blends to a brown patina. Walnut stock is in good condition with scratches, nicks and dings. There is a small chip on the buttstock at the top of the stock near the buttplate. The buttplate has pitting that blends to a brown patina. All markings and cartouche are sharp and crisp. The button-head ramrod is not original to gun. The frizzen screw has been replaced and is not original. The bore has some pitting. This is an early model 1816 by N. Starr as indicated by the 8-pointed star motif on the back of the lockplate. Overall condition is good and can clean to better.

Valentin Funk was one of the notable Suhl gunsmiths, active in that city between 1858 and 1870.
Condition: Very good; Bore is clean with very strong rifling, metal with very light even patina. Stock shows minor handling wear with moderate chipping around the patchbox opening.

Early H. Deringer Contract Flintlock Military Rfile
Lot # 151 (Sale Order: 150 of 698)
Condition: The barrel has a mottled brown and grey patina throughout, with one small area of light pitting near the upper tang. The lock and hammer have a dark gunmetal patina. All brass has a rich mustard patina, with darker areas on the patchbox and buttplate. The stock has some light handling mars, but is in very good overall condition. The bore could benefit from a cleaning, but is in good overall condition. The mechanics are very good.
